Area Report:
Please stay tuned for our trails to officially open. At this point they will NOT open tomorrow (12-12-2016). Please remember: when a target date is announced in advance of our trail opening, it is always followed with “conditions permitting”. Currently what we have on the ground, if it were to be panned, would not leave a decent trail. It would end up hit & miss and actually – mostly miss – with a lot of rough sections which would be dangerous to ride. The northern part of the county does have more snow than the southern part.
At least speaking for the southern part of this county, it is just as well that we don’t have a lot of snow on the ground. It was a wet fall and we need the forecasted sub-zero cold for the following week to freeze up wet areas of our trail beds. Too much early snow prevents the trail beds from freezing.
As I already mentioned in a different post: Most area lakes have frozen over. However, it will be sometime before any are marked with a crossing. Until the crossing is marked – NEVER EVER cross or go out onto the ice!!!
Stay tuned for an announcement of when our trails will OFFICIALLY open! Another target date will be announced soon!

Area Report:
Snow today in Eagle River! 3-4 inches of SNOW in the forecast! Today & tomorrow highs near or just above 20. Then we head into the deep freeze. Single digits during the day & below zero at night. This just what is needed to keep freezing up the trails.
Right now the Trail Boss has enlisted snowmobiles to run back & forth over wet areas to move the freeze up along by compressing the snow & slush. Reports this is working.
Should have a target date for Sno-Eagles, Inc. trail opening sometime tomorrow.
Keep THINKING COLD and yes Do the Snow Dance!

Area Report:
Trails are closed until at least December 12th in Vilas County. Trail inspections have been taking place the past several days and a decision to open or not will be made Monday. Most area lakes are now ice covered but far from safe.
News and Reports:
I had posted some trail updates in my last report but they were lost in the Snowtracks format change. Here they are again:
Trail numbers near town have been changed to more accurately follow traffic flows thru the area. The 2016-2017 map shows the new numbering. If you have doubt, follow the signs.
There was a miserable “S” curve & hill at the west end of our WI River bridge along Hwy K. It was bad on a sled & worse in a groomer. That curve is now gone & hopefully the straight hill will be less icy.
The intersection just East of the town park area to head South to Eagle River has been moved about 1/4 mile closer (west) to town. Coming from the East you will see closed gates where you used to turn, don’t panic. Signs have been moved too.
The trail to Twin Haven & the lake was rerouted to align with the next phase of the Conover/Phelps bike trail. New map & signs show the change.
Trail Conditions: Closed
Snow Cover: 2-5 inches. Last snow Lake Effect
Date of Report: December 10, 2016
Area Report:
Parks & Recreation Administrator, Dale Mayo, will finish inspecting today, Saturday, December 10. He will contact all 11 Clubs Monday morning, December 12 for individual area conditions for each Club. Stay tuned for an announcement. Trails are officially sanctioned & given the ok to open by Vilas County. Shouldn’t be too long now. Safety First!
COLD temps have moved into Eagle River. High today of 12 degrees. Low tonight 7. Tomorrow temps will bounce up to 21 and 1-3 inches of SNOW is forecast. This does not include any Lake Effect that might come in from the north. After that it will be COLD for the near future. Single digits or below 0 every night. This is great news. Swamps and wet areas will freeze up tight!
Right now the Trail Boss has enlisted snowmobiles to run back & forth over wet areas to move the freeze up along by compressing the snow & slush.
Keep THINKING COLD as there still are wet swamps & marshy areas.

Trail Conditions: Poor
Snow Cover: 6 inches – no base
Date of Report: December 9, 2016
Area Report:
Ely has a snow depth of approximately 6 inches with no current base. Low lying areas and wetlands have not frozen over, which prohibits crews from grooming snowmobile trails. Snowmobile trail conditions are poor and trail use is not recommended; travel is at your own risk, please use extreme caution. Some small lakes and ponds have iced over; however, ice depth may not be sufficient for foot or vehicle travel – always test ice before venturing out. Medium to large lakes remain open, or have small amounts of shoreline ice.
