Trail Report: Phelps, Wisconsin – December 29, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

3:15 PM Light snow +25 deg.

Well we did get about 1″of new snow 2 days ago which was a combination of rain freezing rain,

ice pellets and wet heavy snow which all helped.With that said we have done some grooming

in the past few days and will continue to do so.There’s been a lot of sleds around.

Our trails are now in fair to good condition with a few sections,that are still thin with a few ruts

and snow.More snow is forcast in the next few days.Please take it easy there will be better days

ahead.

The lake was marked yesterday(Wed.) with orange barrels please follow them.

Happy New Year Riders!

Most trails in Sawyer County are OPEN with a great base and it is snowing right now!

Groomers will be in the Seeley Hills this evening and over near trail 63. Trail 63 north of Seeley from Bodecker Rd to Bayfield Co is closed.

The Chequamegon National Forest trails in Sawyer Co are NOW OPEN …so great news!
The southern part of the county on the Tuscobia is OPEN and groomers have been out. The Flambeau trails are OPEN except for the new trail 36 from Flambeau to Price Co line is rerouted back to the old trail along County Road W.

The lakes that are staked and ready are: Spider, Lost Land Lake, Moose Lake, Chippewa Flowage, Osprey and Little Round. Club members and volunteers are busy out there today staking Tiger Cat Flowage, Blueberry, Lac Courte Oreilles (***IMPORTANT** with the exception of the spur going to Trails End Resort as there are ice heaves and open water, we will update when safe again), Grindstone and White Fish are also all being staked. Please be sure to stay on the marked trails.

Trail 5/27 from the Tuscobia south to Rusk Co line is closed as well as trail 6 from the Tuscobia by Ojibwa north to the Chippewa Flowage is closed

Trail Report for Thursday, December 29th: We are happy to report that we groomed 15N last night and are out grooming right now. We will be grooming around the clock! Our drivers have been able to bring some snow onto the trail and they are turning out good. Trails are in fair to good condition. 1-3″ is in the forecast for tomorrow night, fingers crossed!

Trail Report: Presque Isle, Wisconsin – December 29, 2016

Area Report:

Our trails are in good shape and are holding up well with traffic — you can find nice riding from here and to Mercer/Hurley area (but still some swamps/wet areas not being groomed and we continue to advise to stay off lakes). Please ride with caution – it’s pretty busy up here.

If you head north, note that Michigan grooming is a little spotty around Ironwood area, but Gogebic area trails are nice, flat, smooth and get better towards Berglund/Silver City. Best to ask around after you arrive as conditions are changing daily — and some nice lake effect snow today should make a difference as well.

Ely Area Trail Conditions – Wednesday, December 29, 2016

Snowmobile Trails

Ely Area Lakes & Trails: We have received several inches of new snow since last week’s report. Swamps and wetlands are developing ice; however, they have not reached sufficient levels to support grooming equipment. Area snowmobile trails are currently ungroomed, and some parts of trails have been cleared of debris from the November storm. These trails do not have a developed base and may have rocks and other ground debris at the surface. Use caution if using snowmobile trails – use is at your own risk. Several area ski trails have been groomed and they include trails within Bear Head Lake State Park, the Trezona and Hidden Valley trails. Area lakes have ice cover of varying depths. Use caution when traveling out by foot, skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles and test ice as you travel. Some areas of slush exist on lakes. Area lakes have not been staked for snowmobile trails.

Babbitt Trails: No report

Taconite Trail: Snow – 10-15” depth Base – 0” Groomed – no Condition – poor

Arrowhead Trail: Snow – 10-15” depth Base – 0” Groomed – no Condition – poor

Putnam-Fishing Lakes Trail: No report

Lake Vermilion State Park and Soudan Underground Mine State Park: Trails are closed

Taconite Spur Trails and Stony Spur Trails: Base – 0” Trail condition – poor Swamps and wetlands have not frozen yet, so grooming cannot commence. Trail use is not recommended.

Tomahawk Trail & Local Trails: Trail not groomed but open from Ely to the the Mattala Shelter – this portion of trail has been cut open and will be rough. Remaining sections of trails still need to be opened up from wind storm. Wetlands and swamps have not frozen solid along sections of the trail. Ice conditions may not yet be safe for traveling by snowmobile. Check ice conditions before venturing out.

Our trails are in fair condition. We will be out grooming again tomorrow. A little more snow would be great, but trails have good coverage. Use caution our there, this is probably the busiest week of the winter: Trails are hard packed, fast and will starting to get icy in the corners. Enjoy, but use caution. I know we could use some more snow, but remember our trails didn’t even open until Dec 30th last year, even then we had a reroute for 10 days after. So this is a great start over all. I know for a fact that all the clubs are doing what they can to make our Northwoods trails as good as they can be.

Our trails right now average in fair condition. Things will vary out there from a few poor areas to excellent. Unless we get some of the snow that was forecasted for tomorrow (Friday), the poor areas will grow with the expected heavy traffic.

Lost Lake has been marked. Plum and Star Lakes are both being marked today. Stay by the markers when crossing any lake.

Logging continues on a few sections of our trail system. Watch for logging ahead signs and SLOW DOWN!!! Watch for signals from the loggers and obey them. DO NOT hassle them. If they are bothered or hindered too much in any way – please keep in mind – they have the right and option to shut that section of trail down!!! Please be patient. If you don’t want to wait – turn around and go another route.

We have already had a fatality in Vilas County. I inform you of that to remind you all of how quickly things can come to an end. This sport is a blast but can turn deadly in a heartbeat.

We will be doing a full groom from today through the weekend. If you encounter a groomer – DO NOT pass that groomer unless you have been signaled by the groomer driver to do so. Wait for the groomer to come to a stop and follow the driver’s signals or instructions.

Trail Report: Oconto County, Wisconsin – December 29, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Townsend – Red Arrow Snowmobile – ATV Club – It got cold night before last and froze the slushy trails very hard rutty and dangerous. We decided to take the groomer out and see if we could cut it down and minimize the dangers. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the trails groomed out very well! The ruts seemed to have filled in for the most part nicely.

The east side of 32 was groomed late yesterday and I would rate as FAIR to GOOD. The Nicolet State trail suffered the most damage from the storm, but is still in FAIR condition, with some gravel having worked it’s way into the mix. The west side or 32 was groomed overnight while we slept, and held up pretty well, having the cover of shade. After grooming down the slushy ice ruts, I would have to say I rate these trails as FAIR to GOOD as well. BEWARE of icy corners and any rocks that might have shown themselves after the warm spell. Remember these are still early season riding conditions!

Lakewood – Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Club – The sloppy snow then rain that fell yesterday made the trails a mess. We asked that everyone stay off the trails and most did. The sleds that are riding are doing a lot of damage. The next snow that we can work with is forecasted for next Saturday. With the temps in the upper thirties and bright sun we are loosing our base fast. We will keep you posted later in the week

Bagley and Brazeau – Joyriders Trails – The trails are open but the rain and 45 degree temps hurt the trails. There is water in low areas that needs to freeze up again. No groomers will go out until we receive 3 or more inches of new snow. Remain off the lakes due to unsafe conditions.

Gillett Sno ATV Riders – No update since last report.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club – Chute Pond trails are open and in poor “early season” condition, with many icy areas, some exposed rocks, some thin or bare areas. There are some wet low spots that have not frozen up yet- or that have frozen up and have not been groomed smooth yet.

We have stopped grooming until we get more snow. Trails where the groomers went before the freeze-up, there is little to no loose snow and trails are icy and hard. Where the groomers did not go before the freeze-up, trails may be rutted, with icy patches in the low spots. Many areas have fallen trees or branches- we are working to clear these off the trails. Riding is not recommended until we get more snow.

Areas we recommend you avoid or use extreme caution in until they freeze up completely and can be groomed properly: pipeline trail, trail from Junction to pipeline, 18 Corridor from Neligan Rd to Crooked Lake. These areas have substantial wet & muddy areas which may or may not have frozen yet- either way they could possibly cause issues for you and your sled.

Chute Pond is mostly frozen on top of the ice, and is very slippery. Use extra caution if you ride on any lake this early in the season.

If you choose to ride, please use extra caution. The icy trails now will be a great trail base for the rest of the season- but it’s not very nice out there right now.
Oconto Falls – Sno Jokers Trails – Oconto falls trails will be closing 12/27 at 7 am. The rain and warm weather over the weekend deteriorated what snow we did have. Please stay off the trails

Lena Snow Drifters – Trails are CLOSED.

Chase Sno-Chasers – Trails are closed, need more snow. 12/27/16

Trail’s in Sugar Camp are in fair riding conditions.The recent warm weather and rain we had has brought some brown and (snirrty) conditions in some area’s.Lakes are not marked yet also but are hoping within the next week or so to get them marked.Please use caution in swampy areas as groomers have not been able to get in these areas yet.They are short sections but have to be tolerated until more cold arrives to freeze up these areas for groomers to go in them.Remember to purchase your annual trail pass before riding the trails.
