Trail Report: Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin – January 6, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Area Report:

Our trails are in fair to good condition.  They are flat and fast so use caution, corners might be icy.  We could use more snow, but the cold is holding a good base.  Today, in cooperation with the Mercer Sno Goers, The MW Sno Skeeters groomed trail #8 between our trail system and the Lazy Ace. Our Tucker has a little more flotation over the thin ice sections of that part of the Sno Goers system.  We are more than happy to help out the Sno Goers: many of the Mercer businesses are members of our club and they do an Awesome job pushing our raffles, advertising our events, taking map donations and attending our events.  A big thank you to the Sno Goers for all you do for us!  Also, a big shout out to Bob Skrobot who has probably got about 5 hours in today, double and triple grooming that section of the Mercer trails.  Then Bob is back out tonight on our system.

Trail Report: Bayfield County, Wisconsin – January 6, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Area Report:

Trail conditions are improving with a hard base throughout most of the County.  However, riders may experience trail segments with little to no snow, icy or rocky conditions, wet and muddy areas or otherwise very rough riding.  In addition, some of the areas that were impossible to reach after the major flooding and wind events this summer may still have downed trees.  Report any downed trees or unsafe conditions to the Bayfield County Snowmobile Alliance at (715) 969-4150 or email baycotrails@icloud.com.

 

Northern Bayfield County:

In the Northern Part of the County away from Lake Superior, trails are very good. We have been receiving Lake Affect snow off and on all week which is helping, but not adding up to much. Port Wing has poor trail conditions. Herbster has fair trail conditions.

Central Bayfield County:

The Iron River area trails continue to improve with several inches of fresh snow over the past couple of days and a very hard base. Main focus has been clearing fallen trees from past high winds and grooming will start again Friday morning due to temperatures.

Southern Bayfield County:

Barnes- Grooming is in progress on all Town of Barnes trails, Trail 7 & Trail 17.  Trail 17N to Iron River has been groomed as well as Trail 18 to Corridor 31. Trail 31S to Mulligan Creek and to the Ounce River has not been groomed due to lack of snow and swamp freeze up.  That area will be addressed in the future after we receive more snow. All trails are in fair to good condition, due to snow conditions, please ride with caution.

 

Drummond- Drummond trails have a hard base but very little new snow. The groomer will be out over the weekend on all trails with the possible exception of north of Grand View and Bibon Swamp until the ground freezes.

Namakagon- The stick trail will be put up on Lake Namakagon on Friday, January 6th.  The groomers went out late last week and hit all trails.  Conditions are fair with a good base.  Please use caution when riding and stay safe.

Timber Sale Activity:

Trail 1 –just east of Port Wing – between Touve Rd. and Flagg Rd. is CLOSED due to active logging on private land until further notice

Trail 1 – between Cornucopia and Bayfield – near Henkens Rd. there is active hauling on the trail.

Trail 31 – Northwest of the City of Washburn – near Lost Lake Rd. is being actively logged directly on the trail; USE EXTREME CAUTION! There may be times when it is not passable.

Trail 17 – Southwest Barnes into Douglas County – A couple timber sales are starting up in each county and activity is starting. A reroute is being worked on for the winter but for now follow signs but be alert.

Trail Report: Tomahawk, Wisconsin – January 6, 2017

Area Report:

All Lincoln County snowmobile trails are will OPEN as of 5:00pm this evening.

Lincoln County snowmobile trails in ZONE 1 are open.

Trails in Zone 2 and 3 will open today at 5:00pm. Zone 2 on the Lincoln County snowmobile map are open with the exception of the zone 2 trails south and  west of the Wisconsin River that remain closed.

Trails in wooded areas are in fair condition, with the exception of some low lying areas which may be rough.

Trails designated as winter ATV trails in these areas are OPEN to ATV use. ATV Winter trails in Zone 2 and Zone 3 east of the Wisconsin River will open for riding at 5:00PM on  Friday, January 13. ATV trails close when the temperature is above 28 degrees F.

Oneida County snowmobile trails are OPEN. Trail conditions are considered in early season,rough condition.

Trail Report: Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – January 6, 2017

Area Report:

Trail report for January 6, 2017- The trails are in fair to good condition. With our extreme subzero temps it is creating a rock hard base but, we can always use more snow. Our groomers have been out and been doing what they can to knock out a nice trail. The corners are bare and icy please use caution. We have a reroute on trail 15N just past Gooch’s Bar and Wildcat Lodge. It is signed. It is very easy to get cold weather injuries with our extreme cold temps.- Please be careful out there! Remember be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Tomorrow The Granary Family Restaurant is hosting a brat for the club! Join us from 11-2 for brats, hotdogs, and chili. You can purchase a meal including brat/hotdog, chili, chips, and dessert or an individual brat. We will also have club clothing and raffle tickets available at the event. You can reach the Granary by snowmobile on trail 15S or by car on Hwy M in Boulder Junction. All proceeds from this event go towards maintaining the trails in the Boulder Junction trail system. are in fair to good in sections.With the very cold temps not many riders around.

We rode through MW, Boulder and Arbor Vitae trails on January 2.   I would call our trails fair to good.  We groomed the entire trail#6 today (twice) so it is a lot better now.  That’s the trail between MW and Winchester (see picture from today)  Thank you for your patience.  We got another 4″ of snow last night so things are shaping up nicely.   We could still use more snow, but us snowmobilers are greedy that way: we want “all the snow.”  
A big thank you to all the groomers and volunteers who have worked their butts off to get our trails in good shape! Also a big thank you to the MW Chamber for mailing out Snowmobile Maps for the Club!

Trail Report: Oconto County, Wisconsin – January 6, 2017

Area Report:

Townsend – Red Arrow Snowmobile – ATV Club – It’s -12° F as I prepare this report. If you were wondering if the trails are froze down hard, the answer is yes. The groomers were out on Tuesday night and did a fantastic job. Right now I would rate our trails as GOOD to VERY GOOD riding condition. They were rode hard over the weekend, but cleaned up nicely with the fresh wet snow that fell on Monday night. That added to the base that was already set in place. So bundle up and come riding with us

Lakewood – Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Club – All trails were groomed today and groomed out very good. We rate them as good. Ride safe and stay warm!!!!

Bagley and Brazeau – Joyriders Trails – The trails are getting better, we have a good base and the snow we received Friday night and Monday night helped. The marshes still need time to freeze up, before we can groom them. Club member reported in this weekend and said the trails were fair to good condition in many areas.  Snow is light on the east portion of the trail system, from Klondike north to White Potato Lake.  Pipeline is in fair condition due to lack of grooming.  Forest trails are fair to good.

Gillett Sno ATV Riders – Trails are CLOSED.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club – Chute Pond trails are open and in “early season” condition, with possible icy areas, occasional exposed rocks, and some thin or rutted areas. There are some wet low spots that have not frozen up yet- or that have frozen up and have not been groomed smooth yet.

We got 2″ of packy snow last night, and it’s just what we needed to make our trails rideable again. Most of our trails have a solid ice base with 2-4″ of snow cover on top of that base. We are grooming when possible. After this week’s deep freeze we should be able to groom all low and swampy areas.

Areas we recommend you avoid or use extreme caution in until they freeze up completely and can be groomed properly: pipeline trail- rough with broken water holes, trail from Junction to pipeline- rough with broken water holes, Twin Pine road trail- rutted from vehicle tracks, 18 Corridor from Neligan Rd to Crooked Lake- rough swampy area. These areas have substantial wet & muddy areas which may or may not have frozen yet- either way they could possibly cause issues for you and your sled.

Our trails are ride-able, but they are still in early season condition- please use extra caution, especially in the areas listed above.

Oconto Falls – Sno Jokers Trails –  Trails are CLOSED.

Lena Snow Drifters – Trails are CLOSED.
Chase Sno-Chasers – Trails are CLOSED.

Trail Report: Eagle River, Wisconsin – January 6, 2017

Sno-Eagles Trails Open
Fair to Good Early Riding Condition

Another COLD morning in Eagle River! 17 below at 8am.  Single digit highs & below zero at night until Sunday.  This is good for the remaining trail areas that were still mushy or wet.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Trail are OPEN & safe by the orange reflective barrels.

Land trail grooming last night included Trail 10W toward Sayner; Trail 13N toward Conover and portions of the the “Town Routes” – Trails 17N, 3N & 13S.  With the COLD weather the trails are laying down great.  Smooooooth where groomed.

Manske Swamp area of Trail 3 & WI River Bridge area of Trail 10W/13N are not groomed.  Still concern that the grooming equipment is to heavy to travel through until more freezing of those areas goes on.

There are a few icy areas so be aware.

Riding in COLD weather tips

  • Tell someone where you are riding
  • Dress extra warm in layers -to include frigid weather rated boots – take extra gloves, socks
  • Have a fully charged phone with you stored in an inside pocket
  • Stop more often drinking warm drinks & eating to keep up energy
  • Watch for the 3 digit brown emergency numbers along the trail

Bad News— It is COLD and not much in the way of new snow.

Good News– The entire Frosty trail system as been groomed several times since the heavy Holiday traffic and the trail boss reports them as Good–flat and wide and hoping for some new snow put on top. It is hard to find a trail up here that is not in good condition. Traffic will be light this weekend so it is a perfect time to visit Land O Lakes.

It is supposed to warm up a little thru the weekend with a chance of snow on Saturday.

Trail Report: Antigo/Langlade County, Wisconsin – January 6, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Area Report:

As of 5 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2017 all (Zones A and B) Langlade County snowmobile trails will be open. The trail west of intersection 53A west to County Highway H (Five Cent Firelane) will remained closed due to heavy truck traffic.

Trail conditions in wooded areas will be fair to good, with the exception of some low lying areas which may be rough and have standing water. Trails across open fields may be drifted in areas while other areas may be lacking snow cover. Use caution in these areas as early season riding conditions exist and may change quickly. Please stay on marked trails.

ATV’s will be allowed on the trails beginning January 6, and when the temperature is less than 28 degrees F. UTV’s are not allowed on the snowmobile trail system.

Langlade County Forestry Department
