TRAILS IN VILAS COUNTY ARE NOT CLOSING
GTS Trails app shows groomers out in the last 24 hours

Trail Groomers were out again last night.  Almost ALL trails were groomed.  Here are 3 sections that were not groomed:

  • 70W to St Germain connect which is along Hwy 70W – trail is in the best shape of the season!
  • 17S to Sugar Camp connect which is along Hwy 17S
  • 7N – up here many call it the Paintball Field trail – it connects to Sugar Camp near the Kathan Inn south & west of Eagle River

Best way to learn the trails is to buy a Sno-Eagles trail map. It also had the entire Vilas county trails on the backside.  Plus download the GTS trails app  It is available at the App Store.

The traffic on all trails has been very very heavy even yesterday a Sunday. So as you riding be sure to Ride Right – Stay Right. To correct a post that was out on Facebook, THE VILAS COUNTY TRAILS ARE NOT CLOSING.  We open & close the system as an Alliance. There is plenty of SNOW to ride so we will remain open until we vote to close as an Alliance.  That will happen when as an Alliance we determine it is time to close for the 2020-2021 season.

Went out for a Sunday ride yesterday making a big 70 mile circle.  Headed east on 10E to a right turn on the 9Mile trail a few miles down the rode from MJ’s Wayside. That takes you into the Three Lakes trails & TL5.  TL5 midway runs across 4 Mile, Big Fork, Little Fork, Medicine lakes.  Up on land at Pine Isle.  Then back on Maple Lake into town. 13N to 13N/alt13N intersection.  Left turn onto 13N all the way west into the Sugar Camp trails.  Crossed Sugar Camp Lake & Mill Lake to pick up 15N/17N to the first crossing of Cty Hwy H.  Took Sugar Camp club trail across Dam Lake & picked up 15N to the St. Germain trail “Swamp Trail” which is either 70A or 70B that comes out on Old 70W near Sportsman’s Chalet.  70W all the way back to Eagle River.  Trail Alt13/3S “the grade” to 10E home, by way of Catfish Lake.  Big thanks to Sno-Eagles, Three Lakes Trails, Sugar Camp Snowmobile Club & BoBoen’s.  Trails were for the most part groomed & in GOOD conditions.  Some snirt & icy corners especially under the big heavy pine areas.  A bit of drifting on most of the lakes.

Please stay on the trails to keep them trails open.  Trails will close if riders keep this up.  Done preaching.

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked with orange reflective barrels. Catfish has drifting. The lakes are marked by the businesses on the lake so stop in & thank them when you’re out riding.

Trail Report – : Rhinelander, Wisconsin – February 21, 2021

Reporter:Hodag SnoTrails

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: hard base

Date of Report: February 21, 2021

Area Report:

The trails are set with a good solid base are are holding up tight currently.  There are some thin spots and a few icy corners.  Some rocks are starting to be rolled up.  I would rate the trails as GOOD.      Please be aware, we try to do all of our grooming at night, but there are instances that we have activity in daylight.  Keep a watchful eye out for groomers on the trail.  If you meet a groomer, please pull over and let them by.  Currently, we have two of the groomers broke down with hydraulic issues.  We hope to have them up and running by Tuesday.

We are continuing to groom on our regular schedule.  All lakes are marked and ready for traffic.  It is always beneficial to ride near the lake markers for the best ride.  There are some signs of slush on the lakes, but they freeze up as soon as they form.  There is more a risk of frozen slush than wet slush.  Also, Boom Lake (Wisconsin River) does end up with roads being plowed across them.  The club can’t keep up on marking all of them, so beware when running the river sections.

As always, please stay on the marked trails.  It may sound like a broken record, but it is sooooo important for the life of our trail system that all riders respect the rights of our landowners (over 150 just on Hodag Sno-Trails system).

GTS Trails app shows groomers out in the last 24 hours

Trail Groomers were out again last night.  ALL trails were groomed except  Club Trail Uncle Kent’s which is a deadend spur off of Trail 10W

Best way to learn the trails is to buy a Sno-Eagles trail map. It also had the entire Vilas county trails on the backside.  Plus download the GTS trails app  It is available at the App Store.

The traffic on all trails has been very very heavy. So as you riding be sure to Ride Right – Stay Right. Rode again just a short about 30 ride here what we saw.

Heading out from our house on 10E toward Eagle River.  Trail 10E was very rough.  Rode 4 miles to the 10E/1 intersection.  Took 1 toward Chanticleer Inn & south entrance to Eagle Lake trail.  It too was very rough with moguls.  Both were groomed over night so should be in better shape.  Eagle Lake drifted over early in the season & is bumpy.  Trail 1N was snirty with blow out in the corners.  1 to the 17N intersection heading north & west to Hwy 45N crossing. 17N was snow covered, but both 1N & 17N were also rough & bumpy.  These trails were also groomed overnight so should be better.  From there headed south on 17 toward town.  Lunch at Buckshots.  Then to town.  Trail 17 to town was much better.  In town trail 10/13 was in VERY GOOD shape with plenty of SNOW.  The grade heading south (alt13/3S) was SNOW filled & VERY GOOD a little bumpy due to heavy traffic.  10E between Loon Lake Rd to Bloom Rd was rough.  It is also thin & grainy for most of that section.  From Pine Ln & Taylor Lk intersection went right & took the Catfish Lk Loop road trail to Catfish Lake Trail.  Lake trail had drifted SNOW so it was rough.  Came out at 12 Pines & back onto 10E going east.  10E from there was very rough & bumpy. Groomed overnight & should be better.

Please stay on the trails to keep them trails open.  Lots of off trail riding is causing a lot of problems.  Trails will close if riders keep this up.  Done preaching.

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked with orange reflective barrels.  The lakes are marked by the businesses on the lake so stop in & thank them when you’re out riding.
