Trail Report – : Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – March 1, 2023

Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club Trail Report – Wednesday, 3/1/2023

At 8:00 a.m. it’s 27 degrees out with overcast skies and a high of 30 degrees for today. Light snow is expected to start around noon with accumulations of 2”-4” into the evening.

We groomed 6E and 15N last night and 2W and 8W early this evening.

We are still down one groomer and are waiting for new tracks to be delivered and installed. This leaves our New Holland doing double duty until we get our John Deere repaired.

Yesterday was 38 degrees and sunny out and this already took a toll on our recent new snowfall. Today our groomers reported areas of exposed ice base in the corners.

Our trails are in fairly good shape, but we are expecting mid to upper 30 degrees temps through the weekend. Hopefully we have cloud cover to protect the road routes and trails in open areas.

Area Report:

Took a ride yesterday, lots of traffic for a Tuesday, we rode Minocqua, Arbor Vitae, Sayner, Star lake, St Germain, I think the trails are the best shape of the year, no bumps with plenty of snow. 2-3 more inches today will only make it better. Nice ice base also. This weekend will be some of the best riding of the year. Dont miss out as the traffic will be light because its March and everybody is putting there sleds away for the winter.

Area Report:

Washburn County snowmobile trails still remain open at this time. Area Clubs & County Staff are reporting fair conditions after the weekend. The rainy weather received through most of the day on Monday has covered most of the trails in ice. There is snow in the forecast for Wednesday, and we hope that will help with the overall conditions of the trails.

Area Report:

We did get around 6″ of new snow on Monday.  It didn’t have a lot of moisture, but it was better than the real fluffy stuff we got last week.  Trails were grooming out nicely.  It’s still not sticking to trails as much as we’d like, so your skis will still be riding on ice, especially in the corners.

Yesterday brought us temps in the upper 30s with sunshine, so we did lose some snow cover.    There is another 2″ – 4″ forecast today and possibly turning to sleet before it’s over.  This could help improve trail conditions before the warmer temps & sun come back later in the week and into the weekend.

There were two more fatalities in northern WI over this past weekend.  Please be careful out there!  Approach every corner with the assumption that you’re going to meet another rider.  This season is soon coming to an end.  Let’s make sure every single rider gets to go home to their families.

Trails Good but still very icy underneath

Trails are a mixed bag as the evil sun was out yesterday. The end of February into March brings days where the sun is out longer. Going to SNOW today cloudy most of the day. Forecast is for 2-4 inches. 

Wasn’t able to ride yesterday.  Spoke to a couple that did ride yesterday.   Took Trail 10/13 south out of town riding Alt 13S to Three Lakes. In Three Lakes took TL 11 to TL 5 north which connects to the 9Mile trail that intersects with Eagle River 10 that heads west into Eagle River.  Reported Alt 13S was in “great shape”. 10 had some burn through from the sun.  That section is on the north side of the road.  Then rode through town on 10/13 heading north & picked up 17N to Phelps which they said was “in fabulous shape”! 

Touch up grooming last night with the groomer leaving the barn on Trail 10W/13N heading north to the Trail 17N intersection.   Heading northeast on Trail 17N to Trail 1 that runs to Eagle Lake trail.

Please remember:

When you come upon a group of sleds in front of you on the trail.  Passing them can get you in trouble.   Last time out I saw several groups ride up to other groups.  The entire group passed the group they come upon.  Not a good idea.  By the time the last sled passes a sled could be coming from the other direction.

Remember as you ride & meet a groomer the equipment is NOT able to leave the trail due to it’s weight.  Pull over & stop.  Wait for direction from the driver.  Give ’em a thumbs up.  They groom so we can ride!

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are still marked.  With the sun  surface slush will form on the deep SNOW.

Trail Report – : Conover, Wisconsin – February 28, 2023

Area Report:

We have skipped grooming Monday and Tuesday. We will be out Wednesday night as the night temps drop to help set the trails up. The 7″ of snow we got was little heavier than last big snow. And with the warmer temps and the sun out all day Tuesday, it added moisture to the snow to help pack it in. 

Took a short ride around Conover today and the less traveled trails like the D loop from K West around to W Buckatabon Rd was good. Trail along K West had more traffic and beat down. Trail 13 north to Heartlake Rd wasn’t bad. A few spots were sun was hitting the trail took a hit. Cemetery Trail was great. Road crossings and road routes are pretty bare right now.

There is more snow in the forecast for Wednesday-1-2″ possible.

Snowmobile Information:

Ran 17 this afternoon to see how things laid down. Trail is “good” about 95%. 37 degree temp, considerable sled traffic, and sun, have worked the base. Several spots on 17 between Mattke Rd and F that were dirt before the snow have reflected through. The rest of 17 is pretty good running in the middle. Base is soft and getting compacted. See what grooming and colder temps do for us. 17 North of 5 was getting bumpy – but ok yet. Out in the Powell Marsh, the bridge is exposed, as is about 150 feet of grade on either side. Cloudy tomorrow and Thursday, high 27 tomorrow, but 31 Thursday. Partly sunny Friday and Saturday with high of 35 Friday, and 39 Saturday. Snow shows 2-5″ possible yet. Mark
