Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – February 2, 2023

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 12-16 inches

Date of Report: February 2, 2023

Area Report:

Groomers have been out all week and trails are in fantastic shape. The cold weather has been nice to set up trails after grooming and preserve conditions. The groomers will continue throughout the weekend. Friday will be very cold so bundle up and add those layers.  Saturday and Sunday are high 20’s so it will be perfect weather for riding.  Lakes have frozen over as well but because they were slushy earlier this season, ruts were created and have frozen up, so please ride with caution as the lakes can be rough.

Looking ahead to next week it is important to set some expectations with warmer weather in the forecast.  With warmer temps a couple of the days and even the possibly a little rain/snow mix on Monday, grooming operations could be delayed.  We have so much snow this won’t hurt things with regard to the loss of snow, but do know that the warmer temps and some precipitation will soften things and groomers will not be able to groom, as they will get stuck and potentially do more damage to the trails than good until it gets colder again.

Just a point of forewarning; groomers will be adjusting their schedules accordingly as the weather presents itself.  They may not be able to hit the trails as hard on Monday like they typically do after the heavy weekend traffic if it is above freezing and rains. The forecast shows above freezing temperatures again on Wednesday and Thursday next week,  so it could be the weekend when the best grooming opportunities are available as the temperatures improve.

So, next week (beginning Monday, February 6) if you ride during the week and you find some rough trails this is the situation. Please be kind and understanding if grooming is prolonged until the start of the weekend and know the groomers will go as fast as they can to make up for any lost time. With that said, do know if they can be grooming during the week they absolutely will, just a heads up just in case.

There has been a recent dusting of snow across the county. Area Clubs & County Staff are continuing to maintain a close eye on trails and their conditions. All of the clubs are reporting the trails to be in great condition for riding. Cooler temps & more snow is in the forecast so the trail base should harden back up and create great riding for the remainder of the season. Please remember to ride with caution and stay on designated trail surfaces. Clubs are out grooming and maintaining the trails on a regular basis so please use caution when you encounter grooming equipment

Trail Report – : Conover, Wisconsin – February 2, 2023

Reporter:snobuddies

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 10-16”

Date of Report: February 2, 2023

Area Report:

Did a light grooming route yesterday. We both hit the busy trails and ones not hit on Tuesday. With the colder temps, trails are staying flat for the most part. I hit one section of Trail 3 near the Chicago Ave spur that was bumpy. But the rest was pretty flat yet. The only snow in the near forecast is a dusting to 1”. Some more snow would be nice to work with, but the base is holding.
Please remember to stop at stop signs, ride right, ride safe. We have had too many fatal accidents in the past 2 weeks because of speed.

News and Reports:

We have a spot that sleds are riding off trail. This is on Trail 3 where sleds are going past a barrier and caution tape to ride on the ATV trail. We don’t have permissions for snowmobiling on this private land. Please stay on the trail.

If you find a condition that you need to report to the Conover Sno-Buddies like a down tree, water on the trail, etc, either message us on Facebook, use the contact page on our website, or even notify a local establishment. They know how to get a hold of us to fix the issue.

  • A reminder to ride between the orange blazers. Along Hwy K West, there were several 100 trees removed this summer to place new electric poles. Most of the stumps are still there. If you were to hit one, it could ruin your trip quickly. Ride Right ➡️ Ride Safe.
  • To see where the Groomer is at, check out  Groomer Tracker  Half the cost of the app comes back to Conover Sno-Buddies to support grooming operations.

Gogebic Area Trails are all reporting to be in good to excellent condition.   Today is going to be very cold, so be sure to dress for it and plan out your route and gas stops.  About 1-2” of new snow overnight and woke up to snow this morning.   All trails in the Lake Gogebic Area are being groomed daily.   Trails are holding tight with slight studder bumps in corner, hills and stop and start sections.   Snow cover is good – but wouldn’t mind another foot right about now!     Enjoy the weekend – it’s going to be a great time to get out and ride!

Good to Very Good

Trail conditions are in Good to Very Good riding condition.  Traffic yesterday did pick up.  Many large groups of sleds so please Ride Right & Slow down. Forecast for some early morning SNOW today.  May 1/2 inch.  Temps dropping tonight to 12 below.  Tomorrow high of 3 & low of 3 below.  Then popping back up to the low 20’s-30’s for the rest of week.

There is plenty of loose SNOW on the trail over the hard ice.  There are slippery sections especially in the corner but there are straightaways that are also slippery.  Other than that really no problem areas to report.

Last night groomers were out doing spot grooming.  From the groomer barn headed south through town on 10/13 to 70W/13/7 turn behind Dairy Queen heading west.   70W groomed to the St. Germain turn around at Wood Duck Lane. 13S groomed to Sugar Camp connect. 7 aka Paintball Field trail to Hwy H where is connects to the Sugar Camp trails.

REMINDER – Trail 10E has a one-way section that starts at Taylor Lake Rd.  When riding & head east past the ERRA Sports Arena you ride on the south side of Hwy 70E.  This goes all the way to the gas station.  When riding & heading west from the gas station you ride on the north side of Hwy 70E.  All road crossings have signs that say DO NOT ENTER – if you are going the wrong way.  Please be aware & do not go the wrong way on these trails.

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are marked.  Please stay by the orange reflective barrels. Surface is very hard.  Found it slippery in spots. Remember not all lakes are safe.

NOTE: Off of Trail 70W after entering St. Germain is a trail locals call “The Goat” trail.  It is a Club Trail that starts at TIN 287 to TIN 288 that is CLOSED.  It is clearly marked as CLOSED with fencing & signs.  Please do not ride through this area from either direction. DO NOT RIDE ON HWY 70 as this is not legal.

Last, off trail riding is a big problem.  PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL & Take the Snowmobilers Pledge.

Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – February 2, 2023

Reporter:Phelps Snowmobile Club

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 15″-20″

Date of Report: February 2, 2023

Area Report:

Good morning.  The Phelps Trail System is in excellent condition.  We could use some more snow though.  Grooming is being done nightly.  Milder temperatures are forecasted for this weelend and early next week.  Ideal riding conditions.  They say maybe 1/2″-1″ of snow today.  Please be careful out on the trails.  Keeep to the right, slow down, don’t drink and drive and stay on the trails.  We have had reports of sledders not stopping at stop signs.  This is foolish and could cost you dearly.  Please obey trail signs just like you would highway signs.

Stay safe and think snow!
