Trail Report: Forest County, Wisconsin – December 27, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 1-3

Date of Report: December 27, 2016

Area Report:

Trails are open but are still in early season riding condition.  After the freezing rain and warm temperatures over the weekend, trails are icy.  Expect to find rough spots until more snow arrives.  Forest County does not promote or mark trails across lakes.  We advise you to stay off any lakes or frozen water as the ice is unsafe.

Trail conditions will vary throughout the county so please ride safely and responsibly.  Use caution when riding on lakes or frozen water as ice conditions can vary greatly.

The clubs that maintain the Forest County Trail System are made up of volunteers who work very hard to provide the best trails possible.  Please respect them while on the trail and allow them to do their job.  Remember, TRAILS ARE GROOMED DAY AND NIGHT.

Thank you for riding Forest County Trails, Snowmobiling’s best kept secret.

Just took a quick ride. The snow has settled a bit but are holding up just fine. In fact the freezing rain/snow we had last night is going to set up tonight into a great trail base as temperatures continue to drop. It has been windy so use caution, slow it down a bit and be on the look out for branches on the trail.

We don’t have any trails on the lakes, but I am urging you to stay off of the lakes: Warm weather & the weight of the snow has formed a lot of slush on top of what little ice we have.

We hope Santa was good to you! Have fun and remember to signal oncoming snowmobilers as to how many are behind you.

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 2″ To 3″

Date of Report: December 27, 2016

Area Report:

With all the warm weather and rain we were forced to CLOSE our trails, it is to bad because we had all our trails groomed and had built a GOOD base but it is gone and we will have to start all over. When we get snow and the trails open again PLEASE remember to throw a few bucks in the trail boxes that are around as you know that in the last 2 years the clubs have not had much help from the State Of Illinois so all the grooming fuel was out of our pocket, so please pitch in and as always PLEASE stay on MARKED trails and Ride Safe. When we get change I will update.

Trail Report: Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin – December 27, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8-10 inches with a crunchy coat on top

Date of Report: December 27, 2016

Area Report:

The big warm-up storm really did nothing to help or hurt the trails–maybe helped a little as we received a couple of HEAVY inches of snow/sleet before it warmed up for a few hours. Sop things  are excellent in places and fair in other areas. Yesterday we rode up to Watersmeet and Bergland and things were in pretty good shape as well. Currently 10 degrees and lightly snowing so things conditions will not be going downhill today.

News and Reports:

Lac Vieux Desert is marked with barrels–be careful of frozen slush. There is 8-12 inches of ice (more in some places) everywhere we drilled. I am not sure if the Cisco chain is marked or not–will check today.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Trail Report: Sayner, Wisconsin – December 27, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 2 to 3 inches average On The Trail

Date of Report: December 27, 2016

Area Report:

The latest weather system to move through on Sunday – into yesterday – was a blessing in disguise. No one likes rain this time of year but the inch or so of rain we received actually helped out in the long run. This is thanks to the sharp drop in temperatures yesterday. The rain we received added needed moisture to the dry snow we had on the trails, pounded it down, and with the temps dropping right back down – it formed a nice hard crusty base. There were some light flurries yesterday with light snow predicted off and on the rest of the week. Add some fresh snow on top of our new crusty base and the trails will be pretty darn good. We do expect heavy traffic, so how well the trails hold up remains to be seen.

The downfall of this latest weather system was all the wind yesterday. We had some trees come down and many branches. We will be out today to clear the brush & trees as quickly as we can.

Some area lakes have been marked – many have not. If you come up on a lake that is not clearly marked with a crossing, the best rule of thumb is: turn around, go around, and don’t drown. Plum & Star have not been marked. However, both MIGHT be by the middle or end of this week.

We still have logging going on in a few areas of our system. The operations can start or stop without notification. Even when the processors move out – trucks will still be hailing out loads of logs. Watch for logging ahead signs, logging trucks, and logging equipment. PLEASE DO NOT hassle the loggers. If they get hassled – they have the right to shut that section of trail down. PLEASE BE PATIENT and stay out of their way. Watch for signals from the loggers and follow them. They might tell you to please wait or to go around.

Trail Report: Three Lakes – Brule River, Wisconsin – December 26, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 3-6″

Date of Report: December 26, 2016

Area Report:

Back from the Christmas Break.  Hopefully Santa treated you better then our trails.  He gave us a mixture of rain, sleet and snow over the past 48 hours.  This is not what we were asking for.  However, the temp are dropping this evening and things should start to freeze up again.  Trials are in early season condition and caution should be taken when riding them  Some trails are not groomed due to wet swamps.  Lakes are not frozen or safe enough for us to mark. Hopefully by the end of the week.  Please, please stay on the trail or stay home.  I have already seen some off trail riding that could close our trails.  We log 1000’s of hours every year to keep these trails open and enjoyable for you to ride.  Please don’t make it tougher for us.
