We currently have 8-12 inches of snow. The trails are officially open; but the conditions are early season. Clubs are in the process of opening the gates, clearing downed trees / branches, and packing the trails, especially through the swamp areas, some of which are still quite wet and need to freeze. Grooming may begin in some areas this week. Lake ice is NOT safe for snowmobile travel; for your safety, please do not travel on the lakes until the club members have marked the lake trails. Trail Report: Superior – Douglas County, Wisconsin – December 20, 2016

Trail Conditions: Unknown

Snow Cover: Unknown

Date of Report: December 20, 2016

Area Report:

As is typical for this time of year, certain trail segments can be opened and others are not ready yet due to wetland crossings and/or have restrictions due to private land easements. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property. Please review the information below carefully before trail riding and confirm that you are using open trails.

Please note that on certain trails only segments of that trail may be open at this time. We anticipate frequent updates as the clubs report in with trails they have checked. In all areas where the winter recreational trails are closed the clubs are actively working on the getting the trails open.

NE Quadrant – 12/19/2016

With the exception of Trail 4 West of Hawthorne, all Brule River Rider Trails are open. Snow cover is ok for snowmobiles; some areas are relatively decent for the amount of snow. Snow cover is thinner to the west.
ATV TRAVEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED OFF RAILROAD GRADE TRAILS.

Many low-lying wet areas and swamps were not frozen when we started packing trails on Saturday. Some small waterways that were packed on Saturday were not frozen over solidly as of today.

Trail 1: Open and fair condition. Trails are groomed with one pass on Monday evening. Waino Riders were working on the Bayfield end of the trail on Saturday, no status to report.

Trail 2: Groomed one pass, Trail 1 to Brule. The trail is scheduled to be groomed between Brule and Amnicon Falls on Wednesday. The condition after grooming is fair to good. Trail maintainers will not be grooming west of Amnicon Falls until we get more snow.

Trail 4: Open between Brule and Hawthorne. Plan to open the rest of the way to the warming shelter at Trail 41 later in the week.

Trail 6: Open on both sides of Lake Nebagamon. Road routes are good.

Trail 18 to Bayfield County: Open but there has not been any traffic in Bayfield County. Travel there is not recommended until we hear otherwise.

Trail 24: Open Trail 27/27A and what we will for now call Bayfield 24 is open and packed. There has been no traffic on the Bayfield County side. Travel there is not recommended until we hear otherwise.

Trail 27 & Bayfield 24 has been rerouted to get us off South Shore Grade Road. There is now an intersection near the top of the hill above the Hwy 27 parking lot. Trail 27 goes straight ahead up the old trail from many years ago and Bayfield 24 heads north and east to meet up with Bayfield County farther east. Travel on Lake St Croix is not recommended at this time.

Trail 35: The snow-cover status in unknown at the time but is assumed to be less.

Trail 235: May be opening gates, but snow cover is thinner on the trail than further East.

Trail 635: Not open at this time.

Trail Report: Western UP, Michigan – December 21, 2016

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: Base 14 inches – Past 24hr : 0

Date of Report: December 21, 2016

Area Report:

We have milder weather for the next several days. Our temps will be in the 30’s for highs and high teens to 20’s for the lows. They are calling for some today 1-3 inches.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority reports:

12/20/2016
Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay: Good to very good condition. Water hole remains on access trail to Ramsay (Ore House / Keystone Bar). 2-5″ of base
Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield: Variable, Good to Poor condition. Ditches need more snow on Prospect Rd., ascent to Indianhead from Blackjack has very low snow conditions and is very icy, ride with extreme caution. The club is working with Indianhead to get snow brought to the top of the hill so we can push it down and reestablish a base. The descent from Indianhead to Wakefield also has low snow conditions, ride with caution. The trail from the Krist Gas Station around Sunday lake is drifting badly and the club is working to get that pushed back to provide safer riding and grooming potentials. 0″-2″ of base
Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco: Good Condition. Some low snow spots, but the trail was dozed wider this year due to logging operations (Morgan Mine Rd.) which has resulted in a very nice trail! The bypass around the Great Lakes Rd. swamp remains, the club is working to freeze that up ASAP. 2-5″ of base
Trail 8: Good condition. Needs more snow, skegs still hitting rocks here and there. 2-5″ of base
Trail 160: The bridge project is 100% approved through all environmental review boards. Project is currently being processed for bidding. Expected opening date February 2017. Trail is closed currently south of the bridge. The club is working to get signing and brushing approved so we can begin maintaining the trail for local access.
Traill 11N/11S: Closed for the season. Not enough volunteer labor stepped up to help reopen the trail

Groomer Report
December 19th, 2016

Trails 1 North to White Pine, 13 South and 8 East were all groomed today; however, trails are in rough condition at this early date. Grooming efforts will continue as allowed. A lot of wet conditions also continue, even with the below zero temps we’ve had. Our extreme cold temps will be returning to more normal numbers after today, possibly a little too warm. If temps rise too close to 30 degrees we’ll be forced to do nighttime and early morning grooming only. However there is more snow in the forecast through this next week.

If you’re planning on being up here over Christmas day be aware that all restaurants in the area will be closed for that day as well as early closing on Christmas Eve.

That’s all for now, keep checking back for more updates as conditions change.  Have a safe ride!

If you choose to ride the trails now remember it is early in the season and there will be some wet areas, rocks, gravel and other obstacles that are not completely covered by snow yet
THINK SNOW!

Please stay on trails, riding on unmarked trails can result is the clubls losing easement for the trail. So Please stay on trails

Trail Report: Spooner and Washburn County, Wisconsin – December 21, 2016

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 3-5

Date of Report: December 21, 2016

Area Report:

All Washburn County Snowmobile Trails are closed at this time. Lower temperatures have arrived and have been a big help with freezing the lakes and swamps. We are forecasted to receive 5-7 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. If that happens, the clubs will work to get out on the trails to groom and check them over the weekend. We do not anticipate an opening until early next week and that is very dependent on if everything has frozen and the amount of snow we receive. Keep checking back for updates and think snow!

Trail Report: Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – December 21, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 5-7

Date of Report: December 21, 2016

Area Report:

The warm temps yesterday didn’t do much to help the trails. They are still in fair shape but my worry is that with no major snow in the forecast, and warmer temps through the weekend, they will be in poor shape for the busy Christmas week. A couple of inches is predicted for today; maybe that will help. I’ll keep you posted. Lou Milewski Trail Boss, Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club

Trail Report: Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin – December 21, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8-10 inches

Date of Report: December 21, 2016

Area Report:

The bitter cold is past. Now we need some fresh snow to put on top of our frozen trails and swamps. Trails are ok right now but snow is needed before the big holiday week. There is snow in the forecast for 3 of the next 4 days so we will keep hoping. We do have a couple of reroutes west of town. You can no longer enter the Black Oak from the trail behind the bar. You have to continue to Carlson road and hang a right. Follow the signs. We now have to run Big Portage Lake Rd for a mile as a landowner closed their property. PLEASE obey the posted speed limits as it will be radar enforced.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Trail Report: Sayner, Wisconsin – December 21, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 2 inches avg on the trail

Date of Report: December 21, 2016

Area Report:

What we started off the season with was pretty light and fluffy. It didn’t do much to form a very good base nor did it do much to fill many ruts and holes. We have not had real heavy traffic but what traffic there was caused some bare spots here and there – mostly near intersections or road crossings. While it did hit the low 30s yesterday – the sun is low in the sky right now so we did not see any melting. Even with the above said – riders were reporting better conditions than they expected. Still – It is very early season riding – no other way to put it.

There is a small front moving through today but no more than an inch or 2 is expected, which IS certainly, better than nothing. It will at least cover up developing bare areas.

I did hear that Little & Big Arbor Vitae Lakes were marked. Even IF this is true – please stay on the marked crossing and DO NOT think it means all lakes are safe. If you don’t see markers – do NOT cross or go out onto the ice.

We still have logging going on in a few areas of our system. Even when the processors move out – trucks will still be hailing out loads of logs. Watch for logging ahead signs, logging trucks, and logging equipment. PLEASE DO NOT hassle the loggers. If they get hassled – they have the right to shut that section of trail down. PLEASE BE PATIENT and stay out of their way. Watch for signals from the loggers and follow them. They might tell you to please wait or to go around.
