Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 15+inches

Date of Report: January 11, 2017

Area Report:

It ended up snowing most of the day yesterday.  We plowed our driveway twice!  It accumulated to about 8 inches of new snow.  All three groomers went out last night.  They did have some trouble with the deep snow on the hills, but made it through.  Snowmobiles on the trail will help pack it and groom up even better.  With the forecast of cold temps and groomers going out again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, trails should be good to very good and hold up well.

I expect to see you all up here riding this weekend.  Have fun and ride safe.

Trails Good to Excellent Condition

6-8 inches of new wet SNOW yesterday!  Groomers out grooming & trails are in GOOD TO EXCELLENT CONDITION! SNOWING lightly now with forecast of 1 more inch today.

Rode a little over 100 miles yesterday during the SNOW.  Rode from east to Eagle River,  to Conover, to Land o’ Lakes, to Phelps & to Alvin/Nelma section of Three Lakes Trails. Then home.  ALL WERE GOOD TO VERY GOOD even without grooming!

The trails we rode: Trails 10E, Eagle Lake Trail, 13N, 6E, 10/6E, 6E, 10E

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are OPEN & safe by the orange reflective barrels. No surface slush along the orange barrels on Eagle Lake.

All trails were groomed in Eagle River except Trail 10E which will be groomed today.

Manske Swamp area of Trail 3 and WI River Bridge area of Trail 10W/13N also not groomed.  Still concerns that the grooming equipment is too heavy to travel through until more freezing of those areas goes on.

As you ride keep the Emergency 3 Digit Numbers in mind.  If you need assistance with an emergency call 911 & give them the most recent number you saw.  This helps dispatch pin point your location.

Hi Everyone ~

Sorry for the delay in reporting.  More technical glitches, but we seem to be on a roll now!

Our U. P. Thunder Riders Snowmobile Club reported all our trails here are now good to excellent!  We knew a little more snow would make a big difference.  Between last night and today, we received about 8″ or more of new snow.  This time it wasn’t the fluffy stuff we’ve been getting!  Some good cold weather has helped out the trails, too, and predictions are for more.  Our groomers are out there grooming every day or night making our trails the best they can be.

The following trails here are all good to excellent:

Trail 3 North, Trail 3 South to Wisconsin, Trail 2 East and West, and Trail 13 South

We have great accommodations in our area.  Enjoy a cozy cabin on a lake or a spacious vacation home, a ma and pa motel, a historic hotel, or a casino resort hotel.  There are two snowmobile and ATV/UTV businesses right here that have all the parts you need, can repair your sleds, or would love to sell you a new one!  Two more businesses here also do snowmobile repairs.  We have great restaurants and cafes that will fuel you and convenience and grocery stores and gas stations that will fuel your vehicles and your sleds.  Many other area businesses will be ready to help you with any needs you might have.  We have friendly people here that are always eager to go the extra mile to make your stay a great one.

For a live snowmobile trail report, call Caryl at our Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce phone, 906-358-9961.  You can get questions answered or order area information and Western U. P. Snowmobile Trail maps, too.  If you prefer to email, just write me at visit@watersmeet.org.

Thank you for your interest in our area.  We have great trails, fantastic scenery and wildlife, beautiful waterfalls, awesome lakes, and so much more!  We hope you’ll come up soon.  As always, we invite you to “stay where you play”.  Just let us know if we can help with anything.

Carole Yakel of The Arrows for the Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce

Trail Report: Conover, Wisconsin – January 10, 2017

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 15″ – 16″ in the woods

Date of Report: January 10, 2017

Area Report:

Groomers are out tonight as I type. Snow started about 6:45 AM and came down for about 12 hours. Winds picked up late afternoon and the snow is blowing. We received a good 8″ from Sunday night until now.

Today 8 of us rode to Tomahawk & back. Conover trails were smooth with fresh snow that kept adding up. By the time I got back this way, with the snow built up it was like riding on a cloud. Trails should be very good or better in the morning. Just watch for drifting in open areas.

Traffic was light on the way down & nearly zero on the way back. I’m sure the snow & low visibility had something to do with that. Forecast has a few more inches Wed night into Thursday. Then the temps drop below zero.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section has now been groomed & is much better but still has new trail bumps.. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

The lakes are marked and pretty smooth now. Again, watch for drifting……

News and Reports:

Don’t forget you need a WI trail permit to ride the state’s groomed trail system. Aggressive riding causes more trail damage than slower, less aggressive riding. Ride right & be safe.

Trail Report: Superior – Douglas County, Wisconsin – January 10, 2017

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 6-8 inches in most places. Fair to good Condition.

Date of Report: January 10, 2017

Area Report:

As is typical for this time of year, certain trail segments can be opened and others are not ready yet due to wetland crossings and/or have restrictions due to private land easements. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property. Please review the information below carefully before trail riding and confirm that you are using open trails. Please note that on certain trails only segments of that trail may be open at this time. We anticipate frequent updates as the clubs report in with trails they have checked. In all areas where the winter recreational trails are closed the clubs are actively working on the getting the trails open.

Douglas County received a good amount of snow over January 8-10.  We will be updating as clubs start to open trails.

Winter Trail Report 1/10/2017
NE Quadrant

Brule River Riders, Monday, January 9, 2017.

New Snow: 1-2 inches around Poplar and Hawthorne. With the exception of the southern portion of 235, all Brule River Rider Trails are open.

Snow cover is thinner to the West and South, better for trails to the East and North. Trails are fair to poor in the northwestern portion of our area. These trails include west of Amnicon Falls to Superior and north of Trail 4 to the 35 Trail Head and Trail 235. Trails in this northwestern area have not been groomed.

The rest of our trails (almost 100 miles) have been groomed in the last few days and are mostly in good early season condition. Some of Trail 24 south of Poplar is a bit thin and dirty but good enough to ride.
Good riding includes: Amnicon Falls, Poplar, Brule, Lake Nebagamon, Hawthorne, out to the warming shelter at Trail 41 and south of Brule to St Croix Lake on 27/2

ATV RIDERS SHOULD USE CAUTION IN LOW FLOW CREEK CROSSINGS WHERE MOVING WATER MAY WEAKEN SNOWCOVER.

All trails that were groomed last week are expected to be groomed at least once again this week. If we receive enough snowfall in the next couple days we will attempt grooming the western section of Trail 2 (Tri -County), the northern 15 miles of Trail 35 (Wild Rivers) and open the southern portion of Trail 235.

Trail 1: Open to Bayfield County and groomed one pass on January 3, 2017.

Trail 2: Trail has been groomed Brule to Amnicon Falls on January 5, 2017, with the trail in mostly good condition or better.

Trail 4: Groomed Brule to the Warming Shelter at the 4/41 intersection on January 5th & 6th.  Trail condition is fair to mostly good.

Trail 6: Trail has been groomed on January 5, 2017, on both sides of Lake Nebagamon.
Trail 18 Groomed January 6, 2017, through to Bayfield County: Rumored to be groomed in Bayfield County.

Trail 24: Groomed on January 2, 2017. The trail condition varies from fair to good condition. Bayfield 24, groomed on January 6, 2017 to Bayfield County Line, rumored to be groomed in Bayfield County. The upper end of Trail 27 & Bayfield 24 has been rerouted to get us off South Shore Grade Road.

Trail 27/27A: Groomed on January 6, 2017. The condition is at least good condition but snow levels drop off some to the south. Groomer driver reports tracks heading down Lake St Croix with no holes in sight.

Trail 35: Three miles groomed January 6, 2017, in conjunction with Trail 4 to the Warming Shelter. Unknown trail conditions to the north.

Trail 235: Gates are OPEN ON THE NORTHERN END ONLY to the first local business. Snow cover is thin.

Trail 635: Open to local traffic, Crews have been out packing and checking. Ice conditions on Lakes are unknown.

Trail Report: Bayfield County, Wisconsin – January 10, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 6-12″

Date of Report: January 10, 2017

Area Report:

Most of the County received some fresh snow today, and some areas are still getting snow. Groomers in all areas plan on being out this week. We are hopeful that the cold has frozen down the last few stubborn wet spots and we are getting eyes on those areas this week. A more detailed report will be posted Friday morning after groomers get a chance to assess their trails.

Northern Bayfield County:
In higher elevations away from Lake Superior, trails are very good. We have been getting some lake effect snow off and on all week which is helping, but not adding up to much. Port Wing has poor trail conditions and Trail 1 near Port Wing (between Touve Rd. and Flagg Rd.) is CLOSED due to active logging on private land until further notice. Herbster has fair trail conditions. Trail 31 to the casino is open, but with some logging activity near Lost Lake Rd. so use caution.

Central Bayfield County:
The Iron River area trails continue to improve with some fresh snow over the past couple of days and a very hard base. The main focus has been clearing fallen trees and grooming will start again Friday morning.

Southern Bayfield County:
Barnes- Grooming is in progress on all Town of Barnes trails.  Trail 17N to Iron River has been groomed as well as Trail 18 to Corridor 31. Trail 31S to Mulligan Creek and to the Ounce River has not been groomed due to lack of snow and swamp freeze up.  That area will be addressed in the future when we get more snow. All trails are in fair to good condition; please ride with caution.

Drummond – trails have a hard base but very little new snow. The groomer will be out over the weekend on all trails with the possible exception of north of Grand View and Bibon Swamp until the ground freezes.

Namakagon- The stick trail will be put up on Lake Namakagon on Friday, January 6th.  The groomers went out late last week and hit all trails.  Conditions are fair with a good base.

Please use caution when riding and stay safe.
