Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – December 24, 2023

Reporter:Phelps Snowmobile Club

Trail Conditions: No Snow

Snow Cover: None

Date of Report: December 24, 2023

Area Report:

Merry Christmas.  Sorry to say that there is no snow on the ground and as of now nothing in the forecast.  Lakes are bare of snow and thickness may be changing daily.  None of the lakes in the Phelps area have been marked.  Please check back soon as it only takes one good storm to turn things around.  Please visit the Phelps area, there is more to us than just snowmobiling.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the state

No matter where I looked, not a flake could I locate;

The sleds were all loaded, and gear all packed up

In hopes of heading North in our pick-up Truck;

Everyone was all nestled all snug in their beds

With visions of riding groomed trails danced in their heads;

When out on the lawn there rose such a clatter,

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew to see what was going on,

Only to see our front yard looking like a pond.

A moonless night had turned to rain,

Washing our wishes down the drain;

But what to my wondering eyes should appear,

A beautiful sled loaded with riding gear,

 With a little old driver so lively and quick,

even with his helmet on, it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his riding group came,

And shouted out and called them by name.

Now Polaris, now Yamaha, and now Ski-Doo;

On Lynx, on Artic Cat, boy what a crew,

And then what I heard on the roof, the revving and stopping of sleds just like hoof’s.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney he came with a bound.

He was dressed in all Gore-Tex from his head to his foot,

With the smell of a two-stroke oil and soot.

An array of accessories he had in his sack,

Wonderful items he unpacked.

Helmet, boots, mirrors and gloves,

All things sled heads really love.

He spoke not a word and went straight to his work,

Left loads of gifts and with a jerk;

And laying his finger aside his nose, and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He cinched up his helmet and turned to his crew,

Started their sleds and away they flew.

But I heard him exclaim as they rode out of site, “May 2024 bring you snow, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.”

SNO-EAGLES
EAGLE RIVER TRAILS
Remain CLOSED

Sno-Eagles trails remain CLOSED due to no snow.  Temps have been bouncing up & down. Currently it has been too warm to maintain much if any SNOW.  What was on the ground has melted.  With rain for Christmas looking pretty bleak for any opening in December. There is SNOW in the forecast December 27 & 28.  Inch or 2 in the forecast.  After that the temps will drop to more normal with 20’s during the day & teens at night.  THINK COLD!   START SNOW DANCIN’

Sno-Eagles trails are inspected & go to go.  The trail teams are going out off & on to be sure no tress come down.  There has been a lot of internet fiber optic lines work & the Club is checking signing as well.

There have been re routes and closures of trails. When trails are ready to open I will list the changes.

Until then let’s all first THINK MORE COLD!  Then a SNOW DANCE will be in order.  Right now there is 2 inches of SNOW on the ground with frost building in the ground.  Need the frost to be deeper & lots more SNOW.

Area Report:

The County is experiencing many difficulties caused by construction, land ownership changes and the late harvesting of crops. Combined they are creating trying times. Trails east of the interstate between highway 50 and Cty Rd K are in question at this time. Plan your trip accordingly. The solar farm is in operation and it is imperative that we stay on marked trails. Any violation will cause an immediate closing of this trail.

Areas east of the airport are troublesome as well.  Caution is needed in the area.

The trail to Somers is closed

Trespassing has been a pervasive this past season. This certainly continues to baffle authorities in the Snowmobile Community. Why must some folks continue to violate trail these rules, The onus is on folks.

Stay on trails or stay home !!!!

EAGLE RIVER TRAILS
TRAILS REMAIN CLOSED

Another warm up leaving very thin SNOW.  Currently SNOW depth is almost non existent.  But before you START DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE.   You need to THINK COLD.  Temps are still too high.  In the mid 30’s or high during the day. Dropping into the low 20’s to teens at night.

The club volunteers have just about completed the trail work and was inspected at the beginning of this week.

Todd Bierman, Park & Rec Supervisor has completed trail inspections by truck or ATV/UTV.  So that when we do get SNOW the Vilas County Alliance can take a vote to get the trails open as quick as possible.  The PSA announcement will come from Todd when trails in Vilas are set to open.  NO RIDING BEFORE.

Keep THINKIN’ COLD!  More updates soon!

Reporter:Toulish1

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 1-3″ More or less

Date of Report: December 12, 2023

Snowmobile Information:

The temps have been cold the last few days, so at least we are making some ice on the lakes, and firming up the swamps. Not any amounts of snow to brag about yet. It looks to get up to the 40’s in a couple of days, and then highs in the upper 30’s through Christmas. Not an optimistic outlook at this point.

Hornshoe Club will be meeting at the groomer barn tomorrow, to get both of our machines ready to rock. Our trails have been inspected, and are in excellent condition.

I was able to attend the club meeting for Mercer Snow Goers last week. They are looking at upgrading two machines if they can. Another club, same discussions – how do we maintain what we have, or get better equipment? Fund raisers, and lots of volunteers.

I can’t emphasize enough, if you ride a sled, join a club. You get a chance to see what it takes to keep the trails open.
