Snow Cover: Looking better

Date of Report: January 11, 2024

Area Report:

Received a couple more inches last night and there is snow (4-8 inches they say) and cold (below 0) in the near term forecast so we are finally getting some where. Trail boss Bob and Silas are going to go out and pan the trail system tomorrow (minus any soft swamps they encounter). Hopefully we get get the base smooth and then more snow and cold will arrive. Fingers Crossed.

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 5”

Date of Report: January 10, 2024

Area Report:

Trails still remain closed. There isn’t enough snow yet to pan the trails. As soon as all 11 clubs in Vilas County agree to open, we will post a date.

The only work we have been able to do is some trimming and tree clearing on the trails.

There is more snow in forecast, but looking to be another light amount for us to the north. Cold temps will then come in. This will help with freezing swamps up. Lakes look to be nice shape once trails do open.

Area Report:

This is the first report of the year and not good. We had a storm go thru yesterday, the weatherman said we were to get all this wet heavy snow, well we got wet heavy snow but not near what they were calling for. We may have 3″ on the ground (if we’re lucky) so trails remain closed at this time. Here we go again, they are calling for snow tonight and again on Friday and then real cold weather, if it happens we will be able to open trails. The trails will have some chisel plowed fields as we could not use or cultimulcher  due to wet weather and fields being picked very late this year. I will update after this weekend. When we get the snow, the Baymont in Freeport has again given us a snowmobile rate of $80 per night. You can call 815-656-4632 and ask for snowmobile rate (they are on the groomed trail a 1/2 mile from the Jane Addams)

For Sale: 2019 Ski-doo Renegade Enduro. Original owner, doctors report he just sits in his chair staring out at the snow coming down, mumbling and giggling and talking to the squirrels. Hah!

Hornshoe club had our monthly meeting last night. Between a couple of inches today, and potential for some more tomorrow, we may start panning later in the week. we hope to establish what we can for a base before the hard freeze hits us. Our club is lucky, in that the majority of our trails are on high ground. The swamp people in some of the Northern clubs have been trying to run snowmobiles, rollers, or panning through their swamps, to try and get the cold into the ground as much as they can.

I saw a post from another club, where they were panning the trails. There was a considerable number of people poking fun or criticizing them for doing that. This is the part where the old man tells you to join a club, pay attention to what the groomer team is reporting, and understand how it works. You don’t just wait for 10 inches of snow, groom it, then ride on it. A lot of great volunteers, with tons of experience, do a lot of deliberating to determine how to attack the trails every year. When you build a road, you excavate to the hard ground, then put in layers of base course and water it and compact it to make it as hard as you can before you put the pavement over it. If you have a poor subbase, your road won’t hold up. Trails are the same way. You have to work with what you have, and do the best you can to build from the ground up using whatever you have available.

We will see what the next couple of days brings us. Meanwhile, the boys and I have to get back to a great discussion regarding acorns.

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 9, 2024

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 0-5

Date of Report: January 9, 2024

Area Report:

Trails remain closed, but just a quick update. We do have some snow on the ground, however not enough just yet.  We will update if any new snow falls.  The temperatures have been consistently cold this week and ice is forming, however, most of the lakes do not have consistent good ice. While there may be 5″ to more in some areas there is open water in others. Lost Land Lake is the only lake to be reported as having consistent safe ice throughout. All others have open areas, so without good, consistent ice throughout the whole lake to ensure safety there is no plan to stake as of now.

Do remember our ATV/UTV trails ARE OPEN! So, if you are itching to ride or have that snowmobile trip planned keep those plans and grab your ATV/UTV or rent one and hop on the trails. It is beautiful out there with the white snow cover.  Please do not ride on wetlands that are not frozen, as that damages the forming ice.

Lake reports so far (these are the only areas we have had reports on, if the lake is not listed, we have not received a report which means no news/change yet):

-Lost Land – volunteers are planning a staking day as they do have good ice

-Chippewa Flowage – many areas average 5″ but still open water in many areas.

-Grindstone/Whitefish/LCO – open water in many areas

-Sissabagama – iced over but not safe measurable ice

-Spider and Tiger Cat – no report, checking early this week

-Round Lake – not consistent ice

We will post an update AS SOON as there are any changes.
