Trail Report: Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – March 5, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 24″ and up

Date of Report: March 5, 2017

Area Report:

Trails from Copper Harbor to Twin Lakes are open, being groomed and in good to very good shape still. All my renters coming in have said they might have hit a few small areas that were a little rough, but otherwise trails were smooth!  Temps have been good, said warmer yesterday but it seemed way cooler and it was only 2 when I went to work at 8:30 am!   Sun is peaking through a little today, windy but a great day for riding.  Parking lots are getting bare and crossing main roads too, but other than that, there is snow everywhere.  Forecast is not as bad as it looked earlier in the week, a couple of warm days, then back to cooler temps and snow.  So, for the foreseeable future, we will be riding in the Keweenaw!!

Sled dog races wrap up today in the Keweenaw, so take it easy if up that way.

Respect private property and others when out on the trail, stay off all water, slow down and enjoy the views, and save the drinking for after the riding!

Happy trails from the Trail Goddess!

Trail Report: Eagle River, Wisconsin – March 5, 2017

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: Icy and crusty with bare spots

Date of Report: March 5, 2017

Area Report:

Trails OPEN
Poor to Not Rideable Condition

Overcast Sunday morning.  High of 46 today. Low tonight of 36. Trail Boss Brian reports due to weather and trail conditions no grooming.

Vilas County Alliance President has contacted all 11 Clubs for their input.  The decision has been made to be open at least through this weekend.  Stay tuned for an update early this coming week.

If you are riding you will find Adventure Sledding in Eagle River. Meaning all sort of conditions.  In town there is snow but it was mushy and snirty yesterday. Today with the colder temps it is frozen and crusty. There was icy slush areas yesterday. Some of it deep.  Trails along side the roads were down to dirt in a lot of areas from the rain and salt from the roads. Best bet for riding is way out in the woods.

Trail 17N from Eagle River is open only to the connection with Phelps at Shangri-La Rd closed from that point. Trail 10E from Eagle River is open to riders. Heading west Trail 6 from the Forest County line to Phelps fire tower area is closed due to mush and water. Heading east off of Trail 10E Kimball Creek Trail is open but Three Lakes is pulling barrels & recommend not riding lakes. You can pick the trail into Forest County off the Kimball Creek Trail.

These are Eagle River Conditions.  If you plan to ride other parts of the County be sure to check with the Club, friend, business or Chamber where you plan to ride as conditions are different from area to area.  You may come upon gates from area to area.

For safety here are 4 areas to stay away from:

TRAIL SECTION 10W/13N aka Wisconsin River Bridge is closed due high water conditions. Gated. DO NOT ENTER THIS AREA

High water/slush is also present on Trail 3 aka the Manske Swamp. Use extreme caution.

Section of Trail 10E from Bloom Rd to Loon Lake Rd has slush.

The barrels have been pulled from both Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail.  Advise not to ride.  If you do it is at your own risk.

Be safe & slow down if you are riding.

Come on up and enjoy Weenie Weekend!
The Namakagon Trail Groomers are opening the sections of snowmobile trail from Lake Namakagon to Pioneer Bar and from Rock Rd. to Evergreen Bar for this weekend only!  ATV’s and UTV’s must use road routes, NOT the snowmobile trails.

Most of the County received some fresh snowfall on Tuesday.  As a result, snowmobile trails NORTH of Highway 2 will be open starting Thursday (3/2/17).  However, most trails are not groomed and all are in highly variable condition.  Expect trail conditions to range from extremely poor to good.  As always, please use extreme caution when operating on the trails.

The numerous warm spells have also created various issues.  Many swamps, lakes and wet areas are not frozen; large rocks may be exposed; some fields and open areas may have little, if any, snow; and many trails could be icy or otherwise very rough.  Road routes may also have very little snow cover.

With the forecasted warm weather this weekend, expect trails conditions to deteriorate rapidly.  As a result, it is very likely that all trails will be closed again early next week.

Trail Report: Bayfield County, Wisconsin – March 3, 2017

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 6-12″

Date of Report: March 3, 2017

Area Report:

Most of the County received some fresh snowfall on Tuesday.  As a result, snowmobile trails NORTH of Highway 2 will be open starting Thursday (3/2/17).  However, most trails are not groomed and all are in highly variable condition.  Expect trail conditions to range from extremely poor to good.  Before planning your trip, please contact the local club for the most up to date condition report.  As always, please use extreme caution when operating on the trails.

All trails located SOUTH of Highway 2 will remain closed excluding two small trail sections in Namakagon.  The trail from Pioneer Bar to Lake Namakagon and the trail from Evergreen Bar to Rock Road are open for this weekend only.

Please keep in mind that some of these trails are on private land.  Private landowners give us permission to maintain portions of these trails on their property.  If a segment is in poor condition or if riding could result in damage, please refrain from use.  Any damage to the trail system, especially those that exist on private land, will jeopardize our future use privileges and potentially result in permanent trail closures.

Regarding ATV/UTV use on the winter ATV/UTV trails:  To help minimize damage to the trails and snowpack, all ATV/UTV use is strongly discouraged on snowmobile trails when the temperatures reach 28 degrees or higher. This includes tracked or wheeled ATVs and UTVs.  However, ATV/UTV use is still allowed on the Tri-County Corridor and Town Road routes.

Trail Closures:

  • Trail 13 south out of Washburn to the Tri-County Corridor is closed.
  • All trails located south of Highway 2 are closed excluding the two trail sections in Namakagon.

Trail Report: Sugar Camp, Wisconsin – March 3, 2017

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: Mimimal

Date of Report: March 3, 2017

Area Report:

With no snow and warm temps on the way again trails are in poor to unrideable shape. You may still find some good riding in the woods that’s about it. The end of the season may be in the near future the way things are going. Lakes are still marked with Orange barrels if you attempt to ride.

Trail Report: Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – March 3, 2017

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 6-8

Date of Report: March 3, 2017

Area Report:

Trail report for March 3, 2017-Trails are poor. With the light snow the last couple of days and the lows at zero or subzero our trails are still ride-able. There are icy corners bare spots and dirt in some areas and logging areas have very low snow but out of town in the woods it still is pretty good. It’s expected to warm up Saturday and Sunday so that may degrade our trails – we will just have to wait and see. We can always use more snow and cold weather!!!  Please be careful out there! Remember be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.
