Temps have dropped and we got 2-4 inches of new snow Monday, and we are supposed to get more overnight. Groomers were out today on northern trails.

February 1, help us break the Guinness World Record for longest snowmobile parade.
We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.
If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all the towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!
Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.
Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –
Base 1 – 3 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition.
Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –
Base 1 – 3 inches -Trail is in good condition. Watch for drifts in open areas.
When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic! Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.
Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –
Base 2 – 4 inches – Trail is in good condition.
Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –
Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition. Trail is now groomed past casino down to the Antlers.
We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.
City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.
Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –
Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. No wet areas.
Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.
When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.
Kinross Loop & South to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –
Base 1- 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair Condition. New snow did wonders. Watch for trucks on the trail.
Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –
Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in fair condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross. Trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging is going on, too.
The Downtown Trail is signed, and snow and barrels are on the Portage Ave. Bridge.
Join us on Facebook, too!

Mother Nature left us a winter wonderland yesterday and last night. She gave us 8 to 10 inches of Pure White Gold. The best part is that it was heavy/wet snow that packed down great – increasing the base. We did a full groom last night leveling and packing Mother Nature’s gift. The not-as-good news is that the weather forecast is currently calling for 43 degrees Friday. However, with this last dumping of snow that Weather System Jaxon left us; one day of 40s will not hurt so bad. It would sure be great if when it is that warm, that riders would take it easy on the trails. When it is that warm, the base is very vulnerable to damage. It is supposed to be 33 and 24 the next two days, so this is not supposed to be an extended warm up. Again – this is the current forecast. Forecasts change almost every time you go back and look.
As always, ride with caution and be ready for icy corners. Many corners can start the day snow covered but end up icy with traffic.
Please continue to be cautious on the lakes. The weight of more snow can force the ice down which pushes water up through cracks to form a slush pocket. The slush pockets can come and go.
News and Reports:
There are logging operations in the following locations: Trail 9 between Hwy 70 (TIN 364) and Ross Lake Rd (TIN 225), Trail 7 between Wharton Lake Rd (TIN 218) and Old K (Tin 217), and Trail 7 between Hwy K (TIN 216) and Lake Laura Rd (TIN 214). There is also logging in the Jean Lake Rd area of Trail 7 North, between TINS 227 & 800. That logging should be in the woods off the trail.
(TIN = Trail Intersection Numbers)
Please watch out for these logging areas. Slow down and stay out of the way of the loggers. DO NOT hassle the loggers. They have the right to close down sections of any trail they are logging near or using. If they get hassled too much, that is exactly what they will do – shut that trail down. The logging operations can run at anytime of the day or night. Loggers use some of the trails to drive in and out. So please be watchful in logging areas for trucks on the trail.

We got about 12 inches of snow overnight! Trails are very good. I took a ride yesterday across the Turtle Flambeau Flowage, up trail 9 to trail 14, and then 15 & 77 up to Iron Belt (towards Hurley). I came back on 77, 15 & 17. The “grade” is as good as I’ve seen it in a long time. Have fun and stay safe!

Snowmobile Information:
The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.
The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. With Minocqua/Woodruff to our south, St. Germain/Eagle River to our southeast, Lake Gogebic to our north, Presque Isle/Winchester to our northeast, Mercer and Hurley to our northwest and Lac du Flambeau/Price County to our west, our area residents and guests can choose from a variety of daily or overnight destinations for scenic riding with excellent pit stops along the way.
The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters maintain an active grooming schedule for the area’s trail system. Coordinated efforts with the surrounding communities provide continuous smoothly-groomed trails in this northwest sector. The Sno-Skeeters own and operate some of the newest grooming equipment on the market today. Support the club by attending their special events or contributing to the “trail pigs” at local establishments along the trails. Or show your support by becoming a member!
Enjoy, and please ride responsibly and safely!
