Reporter:SaultSteMarie

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Base is 4 inches

Date of Report: February 6, 2018

Area Report:

The Radar Run is this Saturday, February 10th, from 10 to 3 on Trail 49, south of town.

Trails are in great shape; we survived race weekend.

Follow us on Twitter @sootrails

We have a newly plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business.  Please do that in all the towns you visit.  The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods.  10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 5 inches -Trail is in excellent to outstanding condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 3 – 6 inches -Trail is in excellent to outstanding condition.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic!  Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 4 – 7 inches – Trail is in excellent to outstanding condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 3 – 5 inches – Trail is in good to excellent condition. Trail is now groomed past the casino down to the Antlers.

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors.  It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449.  It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail is in good to excellent condition.

Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 3- 5 inches – Trail is in good condition.  Watch for trucks on the trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 2 – 6 inches – Trail is in good to excellent condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross.  Trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging is going on, too.

The Downtown Trail is signed, and snow and barrels are on the Portage Ave. Bridge.

Trail Report – : Eagle River, Wisconsin – February 6, 2018

Reporter:Holly t

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Very hard base of varying depth – Plenty of loose snow on top

Date of Report: February 6, 2018

Area Report:

TRAILS GOOD TO FAIR

Another cold morning in Eagle River this morning.  12 below zero at 7:35am High of 8.  Sun will be out all today.  With cold temps shouldn’t do much harm to the trails.  Trails are great.  Have changed the Trail conditions around a bit to GOOD to FAIR.  There is way more GOOD than FAIR out there.  Time to get out and ride!

Trails are very icy under the SNOW.  With the amount of  loose SNOW on top you will notice the back end of your sled slipping around.  So slow down to be safe.  Corners everywhere are icy.  Some covered with SNOW. Others blown out with high berms so slow down so you can stay on your side.  Stay on the right side always.

The Groomer Drivers out again last night. Tracking system shows the following trails groomed:

  • 3S(formerly Alt13)
  • 10E to Bloom Rd
  • 10W/13N to connect with Conover 3
  • 70W/13S
  • 17N
  •  Grade through town

The sled traffic has slowed down a bit over the past weekend’s heavy traffic.  Still many families.  Noticed many rental sleds out on the trail too.  Many of them 2-up’s.  Enjoying a first taste of riding in Eagle River, THE SNOWMOBILE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD®  Not many places you can go where you can park your tow vehicle.  Hop on your sled going everywhere you want without having to use that tow vehicle for your entire stay!  Mid-week riding is the best.  Come on up & try it!

Here are a few continuing reminders on the trails:

  • Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake.  Right now there are logs in piles along sections of the trail.  With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down.  Very icy corners.

CATFISH LAKE LOOP & EAGLE LAKE TRAILS ARE NOW BOTH MARKED AND OFFICIALLY OPEN.  PLEASE STAY BY THE ORANGE REFLECTIVE BARRELS TO BE SAFE.    REMINDER THE CATFISH LAKE LOOP TO LUMPY’S IS NO LONGER A TRAIL.

Yes the Ice Castle is still up!  If you are riding zip on over to the “grade” to check out the 2018 Eagle River Area Fire Department ICE CASTLE!!!!  Located adjacent to the downtown “grade” trail by the Historic Railroad Grade.  The lights installed change colors. Ice benches as part of the Castle let you take photos of your group.  Check out this link Eagle River Ice Castle to check out a video of the Ice Castle building.  Warm did do damage to the turrets of the Castle.  Good the cold is back.

Next on the Winter events schedule is the 13th Annual LaBatt Blue Pond Hockey set for this weekend, February 9-11 on Dollar Lake east of Eagle River.  You can ride there by sled. Take Trail 10E to a left onto Chanticleer Trail at Hwy 70E Road House.  Check out the is link LaBatt Blue Pond Hockey for info.

Keep Dancin’!

See ya on the trails!

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 4 to 6 inches of base

Date of Report: February 5, 2018

Area Report:

Hello Riders!!

And the momentum continues! Our trails were good going into the weekend and then we received approximately 3.5-5″ of fresh snow on Saturday that freshened them up making it a great riding weekend! Reports from around the county are that the TRAILS are GREAT to EXCELLENT! We have about a 4-8″ base on most of the trails. There was a lot of traffic this weekend on the trails so groomers are out cutting and smoothing the trails today and in the next following days. The forecast remains for the highs in the teens and lows into the negatives for the week so the trails will continue to stay hard and flat! Lakes are also in great condition and Lake Hayward trail is back open to riders.

Trail 5/27 from Tuscobia to the Rusk County line and trail 63 north from Bodecker Road to Bayfield County continues to be closed.

Surrounding counties also report to be in GOOD condition!

Thank you again to all club members and volunteers and all groomers for your dedication and hard work in to the wee hours!

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – February 5, 2018

Reporter:tpeters

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 34″ to 48″

Date of Report: February 5, 2018

Area Report:

Brrr, it’s cold!!  And we have some nice fresh snow.  Not quite as many riders in town this week.  Not much new to report.  All trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and being groomed round the clock.  Looks like temps will stay in the high single digits to low teens, with the nights being cold.  Also a few inches of snow for the next few days too.  The snow will keep the trails up.  The weekend will be busy in town, with the MTU Winter Carnival starting Wednesday.

Respect private property and others on the trail, slow down, speed kills, stay off all ice, and save the drinking for after the riding.

Happy Trails

Snow Cover: 4-6″

Date of Report: February 5, 2018

Area Report:

We are getting closer to being able to open our trails for the first time this year finally!   4-6″ of snow fell throughout the county over the weekend.  Heavier totals to the north.  3-4″ is forecasted for today and another 2 rounds later this week.  Stay tuned for updates as our conditions continue to change.   This morning was nice and cold -10F so things are starting to look good for hopefully a opening this week some time.  Check back for updates.  In the meantime keep doing whatever snow dance you are doing! It appears to be working.  Please stay off trails that are CLOSED as you are trespassing.

Thank you.

Date of Report: February 5, 2018

Area Report:

Trails are in VERY GOOD condition!

We received 6 to 8 inches of fresh snow over the weekend.  Even though there was a lot of traffic, the trail/base held up very well.  A few stretches are thin, but very rideable.

Groomers will be out throughout the week.  The cold weather will also help hold the trail together.

I expect to see you all up here riding.  Trails are great.

Thanks…
