Area Report:
February 8, 2018 – 7:50am
Sub zero temps continue overnight. 14 below at 7:50am Partly sunny to cloudy today. Trails are GOOD for the most part. FAIR in some areas where there are more icy corners. It’s Thursday & time for the Sno-Eagles Guided Trail Ride. Meet President Rusty at 9am at the Ice Castle on the “grade” trail. Time to get out and ride!
Trails are very icy under the SNOW. With the amount of loose SNOW on top you will notice the back end of your sled slipping around. So slow down to be safe. Corners everywhere are icy. Some covered with SNOW. Others blown out with high berms so slow down so you can stay on your side. Stay on the right side always. Not only on the corners but straight aways & hills.
Wednesday’s are spot grooming nights. Grooming heavy traffic areas & “grade” trail through Eagle River. Tracking system shows the following trails groomed:
Still many families in the area. Did notice a few more groups yesterday. Many enjoying a first taste of riding in Eagle River, THE SNOWMOBILE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD® Not many places you can go where you can park your tow vehicle. Hop on your sled going everywhere you want without having to use that tow vehicle for your entire stay! It’s quieter making mid-week riding the best. Come on up & try it!
Here are a few continuing reminders on the trails:
Yes the Ice Castle is still up! If you are riding zip on over to the “grade” to check out the 2018 Eagle River Area Fire Department ICE CASTLE!!!! Located adjacent to the downtown “grade” trail by the Historic Railroad Grade. Ice benches as part of the Castle let you take photos of your group. Check out this link Eagle River Ice Castle to check out a video of the Ice Castle building.
Next on the Winter events schedule is the 13th Annual LaBatt Blue Pond Hockey set for this weekend, February 9-11 on Dollar Lake east of Eagle River. You can ride there by sled. Take Trail 10E to a left onto Chanticleer Trail at Hwy 70E Road House. Check out the is link LaBatt Blue Pond Hockey for info.
Keep Dancin’!
See ya on the trails!

Our groomers have been out in full force this week. The trails are in very good to excellent condition. We still have been have below zero temps at night which has made for a hard flat base. You may find a icy corner or two, so use caution. Temps are starting to get into the mid teens over the next week and that will makes some very enjoyable riding. Get out and ride now before it’s gone.
Lakes are all marked, please stay close to barrels.

Area Report:
Check your local lodging and dining establishments for the 2018 Cable Area Motor Head Maps!
Trails have a good base of 3-6″ and are fair in areas to very good in others. The heaviest used areas may have some brown mixed in, but are grooming well. Riders can expect some icy corners and a few bare spots in heavily ridden areas.
Temperatures are forecasted to remain below freezing through the weekend, with overnight lows below zero. There are not any sizable snowfalls forecasted this week.
Areas of concern are still Trail 90 east between Old Grade and Federal Rd! Follow reroute signs and watch for logging trucks. Another area is Trail 15 between Club Lake Rd and Camp Eight Rd at the Great Divide, watch for heavy ice over the trail due to a spring that continues to spread water across and down the trail!

Ely Area Lakes & Trails: All trails along the Echo Trail are groomed. Hidden Bay is now open. There is logging between Birch Lake and White Iron, so please use caution and remember the trails are shared with logging equipment. Overall trail condition is good. Please use caution traveling across lakes – stay on marked trails to avoid slush areas. Current areas (rivers, narrows and streams) may still have unsafe ice, please test before traveling across.
Taconite Trail: Snow – 8-20” depth Base – 1-3” Groomed – yes Condition – very good The entire Taconite is in good to very good condition. Trail divots exist on some hilltops between Ely and Tower due to heavy use and cold weather. These will be repaired as the weather warms up and as we get more snow. Use caution in the area between Pfeiffer Lake and Big Aspen as there is logging activity and also a small section of thin ice remaining. This is flagged and signed. The trail base from Side Lake east to Hwy 25 (Wooden Table spur trail) is thin, and there is bare ground in spots. Use caution while riding, especially on high ground areas where rocks and ruts are more evident.
Arrowhead Trail: Snow – 12-24” depth Base –1-4” Groomed – yes Condition – Excellent The entire Arrowhead is groomed and in very good to excellent condition. Please be aware of and slow down for logging activity throughout the trail, especially a large section between Elephant Lake and the Elephant Lake Road to the south. Also take note: the East Camp 90 Rd (between Sheep Ranch Rd and Ash River Trail) has heavy logging traffic and is closed to snowmobiles. Please stay on the snowmobile trail rather than using the road.
Putnam-Fishing Lakes Trail: Base – 1-3” Trail is groomed and in fair to good condition. The trail remains rough in spots due to rocks and low snow.
Lake Vermilion State Park and Soudan Underground Mine State Park: Snow 13-14”, Base – 4”, Trails are groomed and in good condition.
Tomahawk Trail & Local Trail Sections: Snow 15-18” depth, Base – 1-4” Groomed – yes Condition – good The Tomahawk is open and trails are groomed to the Knotted Pine in Isabella.
On trails between Hwy 53 and Side Lake, the base is thin in places due to lack of snowfall, especially on high ground where rocks and ruts are more evident. There are also active logging operations on multiple sections of the trails. Please use caution, travel at appropriate speeds and stay to the right.
