Reporter:boulderwi

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8-12 inches

Date of Report: March 12, 2018

Area Report:

Trail report for March 12, 2018 Poor to Fair Condition. With some warm weather and sunshine over the weekend the trails continue to deteriorate. There are bare spots and puddles in some areas. The trails are very icy and down to the base. Out in the woods away from town it does get better. There is not a lot of traffic which helps some. Road routes are getting very bare and icy. The continued warm weather and sunshine will continue to degrade our trails. Sorry I couldn’t give better news. Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Date of Report: March 12, 2018

Area Report:
Temps for the next few days will be in the 30’s for highs and in the teens and 20’s for our lows. Grooming will be ongoing weather permitting. Use caution on corners they may be icy. Make sure you ride on your side of the trail, we want everyone to be safe.

PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS. WE HAVE BEEN GETTING COMPLAINTS THAT SOME HAVE NOT BEEN STAYING ON TRAILS, RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN LOSE EASEMENT FOR OUR TRAIL SYSTEM SO PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS!!!!!!

THE GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY REPORTS:
Overall Story:
03/02/18: Trails have taken a pretty good hit, we have not received any new snow through the recent storms. Many sections remain GOOD but many others are down to gravel. We suggest if riding you trailer to Wakefield and ride out of Wakefield. The ski hill reroute is bare for long stretches in spots. They remain mostly snow covered, but the 10 days of freezing and thawing leaves them thin during the day and icy at night. We need an influx of new snow. Trail 160 and 11S remain in better condition than our main corridors. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL! PLEASE DON’T STEAL OUR TRAIL SIGNS. Hard to believe we have to continue echoing these issues, we are so lucky we have some of the most friendly landowners around. Please remind yourselves and riders in your group to check road crossings TWICE (at least!) before venturing across roadways. If traveling on a county road ROW keep speeds slow to avoid any issues.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:
Overall rating: FAIR to POOR
Last groomed 3/2. From the Iron Belle Train Trestle (east of the transfer station horseshoe loop) and east to Bessemer the trail has on and off thin spots. Water has pooled and made a slushy (night time icy) center strip. Around Walmart we are working to cover an approximate 50′ long bare spot that is about 2-3′ wide. Lots of snow was drug over it last night and will continue tonight. Please be courteous and keep noise/speed as low as possible in towns. We know you come to play but the community lives with the traffic all winter long, so help our cause and be respectful!

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:
Overall rating: POOR.
Last groomed 3/2. Conditions are good from Ramsay Crossing US HWY 2 intersection all the way to Indianhead. From Indianhead to Wakefield the trail is poor with very thin snow in spots. There is a 1/2 mile stretch as you come into Wakefield that is down to dirt.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:
Overall Rating: FAIR.
Groomed 3/2. Lots of snow on the trail. As you near Marenisco there are some on/off thin spots. Nothing bare.

Trail 8 from Bingo’s to Tula Crossing:
Overall Rating: FAIR.
Last groomed 3/2. Trail has lots of snow on it. We have some big rollers we need a few more passes to cut down but the trail is flat, wide and corners are smooth! Trail 8 on GRTA system is on Old Michigan 28, a wide seasonal county road that is not plowed and makes a fun trail to ride. It does see the most traffic as it is the fastest way to Lake Gogebic/Keweenaw Peninsula so usually by the end of the day it is the first to get bumpy. We do hit it daily though to keep on top of it when weather allows.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):
Overall Rating: FAIR
Last Groomed 2/27. Lots of snow. We recommend doing an “Out and Back” as the Wisconsin Trail 3 / 2 we are told is hit or miss. As you depart the Montreal River Gorge the snow diminishes (with the elevation decline) but there is plenty of snow to make your way into Wisconsin. The Driftwood Bar on County Highway A has excellent burgers!! There are many scenic overlooks on this trail that riders should be on the lookout for! Bald Mountain / Powers Road Lake Superior Northern Overlook, Bald Mountain Southern viewing overlook, The Montreal River Gorge & Superior Falls are all spectacular. Be safe in these areas! This trail is an incredible ride and we are so happy to see riders out on it! Please remember to stay on the trail in the farm fields! So much work and money has been put into this trail we cannot risk losing it. The last half mile from high-line to Lake road is plowed for logging, ride cautiously.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):
Overall Rating: FAIR
Last groomed 2/26. The first 2 miles of the trail as it heads south towards Wisconsin from Trail 2 is plowed due to logging. Please yield to all commercial truck traffic. Trail is in great shape and is groomed from the Vilas County Wisconsin Line to Trail 2 completely, regularly. There are still a few thin areas and areas that need more brushing but the trail is fantastic. Please enjoy this reopened trail responsibly, thousands of 100% volunteer hours were logged to open this! Keep speeds slow as you travel the southern half of it, once you cross the bridge within 2 miles there are some rough spots. They are snow covered, but we need more snow to fill in the uneven trail until we can repair it next summer.

Trail 3 north of Bond falls – good – icy corners
Trail 3 south of Watersmeet to WI – good -this trail gets tons of traffic and it gets rough between groomings use caution over the bridges
Trail 2 west of Watersmeet – good – holding up much better than you’d think, there is a wet area about 20 miles west of Watersmeet where water is on the trail there are signs so please use caution
Trail 13 south of trail 2 – good – icy/dirty corners

PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN THE CLUB LOSING EASEMENT OF THAT TRAIL AND YOU POSSIBLE GETTING A TICKET…..

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Base ranges from hard ice to crusty snow to frozen dirt. Best conditions way out of town

Area Report:

March 12, 2018 – 6:20am

VILAS COUNTY TRAILS ARE OPEN
Eagle River Trail Fair to Poor
Snowmobile Trails Can Remain Open Until Midnight March 31st
Conditions permitting

We are at that time of the year where the trails reports have little change.  The trails really need some new SNOW.  Overnight there was light SNOW 6 miles East of Eagle River.  Enough to cover my car.  There is 40% chance of a little more very late tonight into very early tomorrow morning.  Clubs on the north edge of the County and far east report the best conditions. On average FAIR.

As for right here in Eagle River, Sno-Eagles Trails are FAIR-POOR. Very little change over the last few days.  In town trails are POOR. The base is hard on some of the “grade” but there is also crusty base.  At crossings very little snow & snirty.   Many of the road trails for the most part have little or no snow on them.  In woods trails particularly way out east, north & southwest are FAIR with even some areas of GOOD but this is getting far & few between. That would be 6 miles or more.  A lot of adventure sledding to get there however.  Trailering & dropping off to ride is a good bet.

No grooming at this point.

Here are some continuing areas to be aware of:

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Minimal grooming due to the logging operation.

The Northland Pines School Forest logging project has expanded to Trail 17N.  It begins on the east side of Hwy 45N.  From town that would be heading north and when you reach the 17N/3N intersection on the west side of the highway & cross Hwy 45N it begins just as you get across the road onto the trail.  There are logs & equipment in that area.  Slow down to be safe.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  At the entrance to Eagle Lake on the south side off of Dollar Lake Rd there are some soft spots.  Trail Boss is keeping an eye on it.  Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open.  Please do not trespass on private land.

Hope to see ya on the trails again real soon!

Trail Report – : Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – March 9, 2018

Reporter:SaultSteMarie

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Base is 3 inches

Date of Report: March 9, 2018

Area Report:

Groomers out overnight and trails in fair to good shape yet.  We did get 1-2 inches of snow but not like they predicted. Looks like most of it falling in LP where it’s a waste as their trails are dirt. Trails in woods are still good to excellent!  They are icy and road shoulders are bare. Less snow base around Kinross area, without new snow they will not last much longer. We will continue grooming as needed for traffic and snow conditions.  All are calling for temps in mid-30’s during the day but getting down to low 20’s overnight.

Follow us on Facebook, too.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.  Make sure you lock your vehicles and trailers.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business.  Please do that in all towns you visit.  The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 4 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 4 inches -Trail is in good condition.

When going across the bridge in Brimley make sure you go with the flow of traffic!  Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail is in good condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition. Trail is groomed past Casino down to Antlers.

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors.  It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449.  It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition.

Make sure you follow reroute once you cross bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 1- 2 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition.  Watch for trucks on trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross.  Trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging going on, too.

The Downtown Trail is signed and snow and barrels are on the Portage Ave. Bridge.

Barron County snowmobile trails are OPEN but will be CLOSING for the season on Tuesday, March 13 at 8:00am.  We are expecting a warm-up next week which will decrease our snowpack quickly.  Please use caution and watch for dirt at some crossings and sunny spots. Make sure after you play, you come and stay in one of Rice Lake’s great hotels

Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – March 9, 2018

Reporter:Price County Tourism Department

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 1 – 12 inch trail base

Date of Report: March 9, 2018

Area Report:

Price County snowmobile trails are in very good to good condition for the most part. We received approximately 4 – 6 inches of snow on Monday/Tuesday and all trails will be groomed by the weekend. The trails have a good base in most areas. Some corners are icy, some areas may have thin snow cover or bare spots starting, approaches to road crossings are becoming bare in some areas, and road routes only have a thin snow cover or are bare. During March, conditions can improve quickly if it snows or deteriorate quickly with sun and warm temps. Trails are being groomed when conditions permit.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding including the Flambeau Trail System, Solberg Trail, and Georgetown Trail. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are also open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is  28 degrees or colder.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling and stay on marked trails.
