Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – March 13, 2018

Reporter:Price County Tourism Department

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 1 – 12 inch trail base

Date of Report: March 13, 2018

Area Report:

Price County snowmobile trails still have a good base in many areas; however, there are sections of bare trail and bare road routes throughout the county. Trails in wooded areas are in good condition, so trailering to a parking area along the trail away from town is the best option. The trails are icy in some areas and especially on corners, approaches to road crossings are becoming thin or bare in some areas, and road routes are bare. Tuesday will be the last day of trail grooming as temps are predicted to warm and there is no significant snow in the forecast. During March, conditions can improve with snow or deteriorate quickly with sun and warm temps. The trails will remain open through March 31, 2018.  You can view detailed trail condition reports on our website at pricecountywi.net.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding including the Flambeau Trail System, Solberg Trail, and Georgetown Trail. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are also open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is  28 degrees or colder.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling and stay on marked trails.

Trail Report – : Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin – March 13, 2018

Reporter:Manitowish Waters Chamber

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 10-15 inches

Date of Report: March 13, 2018

Area Report:

Date March 13th, 2018
Trail Conditions: Poor
Posted by: Barry Hopkins – Snowmobile Club President
Our trails held up through the weekend. Many sections are still fair to good, but the problem is connecting the good sections. Road crossings and sections of trail that share the roads that are exposed are in poor condition. So even though there is good riding to be found, I have to rate our trails as POOR. The county is getting feedback from all the clubs as to a closing date – there has been no decision yet. But the warm weather forecast will play a big factor. So for now our trails remain open. Stay tuned and I will update when we know more. Thank you for your continued support.

News and Reports:

A big thank you to the Manitowish Waters Chamber for mailing maps out for us and their help in reporting trail conditions.  Also a  huge thank you to the groomer operators who volunteer their time to make our trails the best they can be!

Snowmobile Information:

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.Manitowish Waters , Wisconsin - Snowmobiling Conditions & News

The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. With Minocqua/Woodruff to our south, St. Germain/Eagle River to our southeast, Lake Gogebic to our north, Presque Isle/Winchester to our northeast, Mercer and Hurley to our northwest and Lac du Flambeau/Price County to our west, our area residents and guests can choose from a variety of daily or overnight destinations for scenic riding with excellent pit stops along the way.

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters maintain an active grooming schedule for the area’s trail system. Coordinated efforts with the surrounding communities provide continuous smoothly-groomed trails in this northwest sector. The Sno-Skeeters own and operate some of the newest grooming equipment on the market today. Support the club by attending their special events or contributing to the “trail pigs” at local establishments along the trails. Or show your support by becoming a member!

Trail Report – : Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – March 13, 2018

Reporter:SaultSteMarie

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Base is 2 inches

Date of Report: March 13, 2018

Area Report:

The City Trail and Trail #8 going west are the only trails left that are being groomed and rideable; they may make it to the weekend at least west of Brimley.

Follow us on Facebook, too.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.  Make sure you lock your vehicles and trailers.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business.  Please do that in all towns you visit.  The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods.  10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches -Trail is in fair condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 4 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic!  Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. Trail is groomed past casino down to Antlers.

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors.  It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449.  It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 0 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition.

Make sure you follow reroute once you cross bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 0 – 2 inches – Trail is in poor condition. Watch for trucks on trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross.  Trail to Rudyard has been groomed but logging is going on, too.

The snow and barrels on the Portage Ave. Bridge were removed Monday the 12th.

Trail Report – : Eagle River, Wisconsin – March 13, 2018

Reporter:Holly t

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Base ranges from hard ice to crusty snow to frozen dirt. Best conditions way out of town

Date of Report: March 13, 2018

Area Report:

March 13, 2018 – 6:40am

VILAS COUNTY TRAILS ARE OPEN
Snowmobile Trails Can Remain Open Until Midnight March 31st
Conditions permitting

We are at that time of the year where the trails reports have little change.  The trails really need some new SNOW.  Again last overnight there was light SNOW 6 miles East of Eagle River.  Enough to cover my car once again.  Forecast is for overcast today then the evil sun will be out for the rest of the week.  The Vilas County Alliance President is working with all 11 Club officials to determine what to do regarding the trails.  Stay tuned.  Will update this report as needed.

As for right here in Eagle River, Sno-Eagles Trails are POOR to FAIR. Very little change over the last few days.  In town trails are POOR. The base is hard on some of the “grade” but there is also crusty base.  At crossings very little snow & snirty.   Many of the road trails for the most part have little or no snow on them.

In woods trails particularly way out east, north & southwest are FAIR with even some areas of GOOD but this is getting far & few between. That would be 6 miles or more.  A lot of adventure sledding to get there however.  Trailering & dropping off to ride is a good bet.  Picture on the left was taken yesterday, March 11, 2018.  Trail 10E near the Vilas County line.  This group rode east from there all the way to Argonne & back.  Found GOOD conditions.  With the sun the next few days this will deteriorate quickly.

No grooming at this point.

Here are some continuing areas to be aware of:

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Minimal grooming due to the logging operation.

The Northland Pines School Forest logging project has expanded to Trail 17N.  It begins on the east side of Hwy 45N.  From town that would be heading north and when you reach the 17N/3N intersection on the west side of the highway & cross Hwy 45N it begins just as you get across the road onto the trail.  There are logs & equipment in that area.  Slow down to be safe.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  At the entrance to Eagle Lake on the south side off of Dollar Lake Rd there are some soft spots.  Trail Boss is keeping an eye on it.  Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open.  Please do not trespass on private land.

Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – March 12, 2018

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: Need More On Trail

Date of Report: March 12, 2018

Area Report:

While out in the wooded sections of our trails, there is still some pretty darn nice riding, the trails to get to that good riding have slowly deteriorated. The Sayner town trail is all brown and road routes are mostly bare. So, on average they are poor with some fair to good sections further away from town.

Unless we get a surprise snow real soon and with the slowly deteriorating conditions, there might be a vote later this week, by the 11 Vilas County clubs, and a decision made to keep the trails open or to temporarily close them. Don’t forget that the system changed last season, as far as reopening them if conditions warrant. If, after we close them, we get sufficient snow to reopen them, all 11 clubs can inspect their own system. Then if each club declares their system safe for riding, the Vilas system can be reopened within 1 day – NOT the 11 days it used to take. As of March 31st at midnight, they close, for sure for the season,  no matter what the conditions are like.

News and Reports:

There are logging operations in the following locations: Trail 9 between Hwy 70 (TIN 364) and Ross Lake Rd (TIN 225). There is also logging in the Jean Lake Rd area of Trail 7 North, between TINS 227 & 800. The logging, in this area, should be in the woods away from the trail. Loggers are also getting ready to move in on the Birch Spings trail.

(TIN = Trail Intersection Numbers)

Please watch out for logging areas. Slow down and stay out of the way of the loggers. DO NOT hassle the loggers. They have the right to close down sections of any trail they are logging near or using. If they get hassled too much, that is exactly what they will do – shut that trail down. The logging operations can run at anytime of the day or night. Loggers use some of the trails to drive in and out. So please be watchful in logging areas for trucks on the trail. Logging operations in any of these areas can start and/or stop without warning. So even if you ride in an area and there was nothing going on one day – it can start back up the next day.
