December 29, 2018
Ashland County Snowmobile trails opened Saturday, December 29.  All trails will be open, except the trail from Marengo north to the East end of Ashland, that section will be closed.  They are out packing the trails today. Unsure of what trail conditions will be like.  The snow we received is good packing snow but with the rain/snow we received it may be wet underneath.  Ride at your own risk. The Corridor has been groomed.

The Tri-County Corridor is now OPEN but conditions are poor at this time for riding.  The Tri-County Corridor is open from Superior to Ashland. There are still several areas on the eastern end that require attention but all known hazards have been identified and marked. Use caution when approaching ribbons, barricades, and cones.

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 4 to 6

Date of Report: December 29, 2018

Area Report:

The Vilas Funded Trail System opened this morning at 9am.

The term “early season conditions applies. There was only about 4 to 6 inches, on the trails, for the groomers to work with. So where there were holes and/or ruts – they will not be completely filled. Rocks may not be completely covered. So suffice to say; actual conditions will vary greatly all the way from very rough to pretty good. We need more snow. PLEASE take your time & ride with extreme caution!!!

Most lakes are marked but some are not – such as – the last I knew Lake Minocqua was NOT MARKED! If you don’t see markers – DO NOT CROSS!!!

Area Report:

THE VILAS COUNTY SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM IS OFFICIALLY OPEN.

All trails in the Boulder Junction Trail System have been panned and just starting to create a base. I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work in making possible for the trail system to be opening. Please use extreme CAUTION! This is early season riding. All areas have very little snow. Some areas have ruts and there can be many hazards on the trail. The swamps and boggy areas in trail system are still freezing up. Please stay on the marked trails. Be careful! Pray for more snow and cold to improve our conditions. Remember be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride. ~ Jim (Hammy) Hamilton, Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club President

VILAS COUNTY TRAILS TO INCLUDE SNO-EAGLES TRAILS TO OPEN AT 9AM!
Early Season Riding with FAIR & some POOR

December 29, 2018 7:34am – 7 degrees- Cloudy

Holy moly!  It’s finally here!  The trails open at 9am!!!

Groomers have been out & nearly all trails in Sno-Eagles Country have been panned.  Thick ice base in some areas.  Thin ice base in other areas.  Most are SNOW covered but remember SNOW on top of ice makes for slippery riding.  Add the Lake Effect SNOW the fell yesterday & best to slow down.  The SNOW base is best in the woods under cover. 4-5 inches of SNOW.  Right through town thinner.

CATFISH LAKE TRAIL & EAGLE LAKE TRAIL ARE NOT MARKED AT TIME.  SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED SAFE.  I’D STAY OFF ‘TIL THEY ARE MARKED.  Will update this report & phone update today if they are marked.

See ya on the trails!

Trail Report – : Superior – Douglas County, Wisconsin – December 28, 2018

Reporter:nikky.farmakes

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 6-8 Inches

Date of Report: December 28, 2018

Area Report:

To get the trail report in an easy-to-read, downloadable format, please to go https://www.superiorchamber.org/recreation/trail-report

*Please note – The Saunders Grade Traill will be closed for the entire 2018/2019 winter season due to significant damage caused by June 2018 flooding.*

The Douglas County region experienced a significant winter storm over December 26-27th.  Due to the widespread nature of the storm, depending on location the county experienced rain (over 1 inch in some areas), snow (up to 12 inches), and/or sleet.  The combination of wet heavy snow and high winds has resulted in a large number of saplings and downed trees blocking trails.  Club members are actively working on clearing these trees but it will likely take several days due to the large quantities of downed trees on the trails.

Where possible, clubs are packing trails with grooming equipment.  However, the trail base is very soft at this time. Trail use is not recommended until the area has experienced a cold spell in order for the trail’s bases to freeze flat for the rest of the season.

Please see the map for which trails are currently open.

We will provide updates as more trails are opened or as conditions change.

Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – December 28, 2018

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 2-8 inches

Date of Report: December 28, 2018

Area Report:

Trails in Bayfield County are still currently closed. The much anticipated snowstorm did bring snow to most of the county, but the snow was very wet and there was also a lot of rain mixed in. The ground was wet before the snow fell so we need to be sure the swamps are frozen and safe for travel. Safety of riders is our number one priority. We are gathering information from our local clubs and will open the trails when we know they are safe. There is more snow and cold in the forecast so hopefully we will be able to open the trails soon!
