Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – January 20, 2021

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 2-12 inches

Date of Report: January 20, 2021

Area Report:

Snow base (in inches):  2-12 inches

Status (Closed, Open, Partially Open): Open

Condition (Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent): Fair to Poor

Not a lot of change from last week. Trails remain in rideabe but fair to poor condition. Not a lot of snow in the forecast but let’s hope that changes.

The same trouble spots still remain:

  • The Grand View and Mason areas didn’t receive much snow and sled traffic could damage farm fields. Please use caution.
  • Trail 1 along the South shore is rough but passable.
  • Trail 1 to Bayfield and Legendary Waters Casino are currently closed. The trail into the City of Bayfield will not open this year, but we’re hopeful for next year. The trail to the Casino is currently being worked on and will provide an update when it opens.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: All Namakagon/Cable area trails have been groomed as of 1/19 (Tuesday) and are in fair condition. We plan on grooming the whole system again on Friday.

Barnes Barnestormers: All of the Barnestormers trails have been groomed this week. I would consider them to be in poor but rideable condition. Trails 7-17 around town have seen the most traffic with bare spots on corners and hills. Trail 17 is poor by town and gets better as you head north. Trail 18 is in very good condition. Trail 31 north is poor. Trail 7-31 south is poor, with a section of 2 miles plowed (logging) just south of 43 road.

Drummond SnoJacks: Drummond groomer is back in service as of last Saturday. All trails have been groomed and reported to be in fair condition with more snow needed to improve the base. Groomer will be out again on all trails before this weekend.

Washburn Valhallers: We are grooming Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.  Trails around Valhalla have a firm thin base with very few bare spots; rideable.  We still have exposed rocks on trail #63 toward Moquah but rideable with caution.  Trail #13 between Washburn and Valhalla will be groomed today (1/20); expected to be firm and thinner toward town but rideable.  Trail #13 between Washburn and Ashland is very thin; rideable but thin with bare spots

South Shore– Port Wing, Herbster & Cornucopia: Trail 1 along the lake needs snow and is in poor condition. Trail 40, 41 and the Wally Polk trail will be groomed Wednesday and Thursday and should be in good shape!

WAINO – Waino Riders groomed the south end of Trail 1 and were planning on going to Tar Paper Alley in a day or so. Harper’s road from the alley has been plowed for logging and we need more snow before we go North from there.

Trail Report – : Spooner and Washburn County, Wisconsin – January 20, 2021

Official Trail Report: All Washburn County Snowmobile Trails are open at this time. Trail conditions are fair to poor with a 1 to 5 inch snow base. We do have early season type of conditions; some trails may not be groomed and lake ice conditions are not completely safe at this time. Clubs are out grooming, so please exercise caution and watch for active trail grooming and trail maintenance. Significant new snow is needed to provide for a good trail surface. Fingers crossed for a good snowfall to get the trails in great conditions!

Reported by the Long Lake Chamber of CommerceThe lake was groomed on January 8th from Pioneer south, up Gruenhagen with minimal issues, but as it headed into the narrows going north from Pioneer it ran into a lot of slush. The groomer did not want to risk grooming on unsafe ice. Volunteers will keep a eye on it and keep everyone posted!

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: looking better

Date of Report: January 20, 2021

Area Report:

I rode last night with Dave, Wagner, and Co. trails were in pretty good shape…we do need snow but the Frosty club and Conover groomers were out doing what they can. Trail up to Watersmeet and forest roads were solid. You ping a rock or 3 but definitely rideable trails. Slow down as corners can be icy and please stay on the trails or legal forest roads.

Boulder Junction Trail Report 1/20/2021

Since Sunday, we have had 148 sleds go past our trail counter as of this morning.

Despite no significant new snow, we have been out grooming. Last night we groomed 15N, 6E, 8W, and 2W. Early this morning we groomed 15S. I will be doing an on sled all trail inspection this afternoon and will provide an updated report on our next post.

Our next snow event for moderate snow is this weekend. We desperately need new snow to keep our trails rideable.

As before, our trails are very thin with icy corners, bare spots, and generally a snirty mixture. Our road trails such as Old B, Nixon Lake Road, Day Lake Road, and Nixon Lake Road our mostly in good condition, but the rest are fair to poor.

If you are going to ride, please be careful, stay on the marked trails, and have a good time.

Trail advisory: If riding on the Boulder Junction airport spur trail, please stay on the edge of the runway parallel to the road in both directions. Damage has been done to the runway and if it continues, we could potentially lose access to this trail.

Snowmobile and Winter ATV/UTV Trails (As of 1/19/2021)

Douglas County managed trails are 98% OPEN! The snow cover varies across the country. Considering the limited snow cover and the amount of traffic the county has received, the trails are still in fair condition. Please help preserve our snow base. Please check with our neighboring counties to ensure the trails are open before you ride!

It is critical that we respect our landowners who allow us to utilize their property for these trails. Please stay on the trail and ride safely.  We will provide updates as conditions change.

Date of Report: January 20, 2021

Area Report:

5:58am 2 below zero – High of 25 today – Low tonight 2 below zero

Trails remain in on average Poor to Fair Very Early Riding Condition
PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS
Off trail riding has become a problem throughout Vilas county.  What this is doing jeopardizing trail easements & will cause trail section closures.  Please once again stay on marked trails.

Some SNOW again yesterday afternoon.  Looked like mix of Lake Effect Snow & Snow. Just a skiff. Weather guys forecast chance of flurries all week.  Next measurable SNOW is Sunday with a 40% chance.  Are you Dancin’?  Temps have dropped Thursday & forward temps at night will be low teens to single digits & even below zero.  Daytime teens to low 20’s.

Trail 3N aka Manske Swamp has been closed for now.  Due to high water & off trail riding.  This trail is a cut across between 13N & 17N.  After it freezes back up it may reopen.  Stay tuned for updates.

No report on Trail 10W aka Wisconsin River Trail.  Will do some more checking today & update if necessary.

Trails Early Riding Condition with conditions at Fair to Poor. Almost daily there is light snow fall since Sunday. Not enough to improve condition but to cover frozen ground & ice base in most areas. Crusty frozen snow under the new SNOW.  As of yesterday most everything was covered.  Areas of snirt & crusty snow as well.  No grooming overnight.

Catfish & Eagle have been marked by businesses on the lake. This includes the spur to Eagle Waters. Stay by the markers to be safe.  Temps have dropped so that will freeze up any remaining surface slush

PLEASE REMEMBER WHILE VILAS COUNTY TRAILS ARE OPEN, ONEIDA & FOREST ARE NOT.  PLEASE DO NOT RIDE IN THOSE AREAS.  This includes Three Lakes, Sugar Camp & Newbold which are all in Oneida county.

The Eagle River Area Volunteer Fire Department has announce that there will be no Ice Castle this winter.

The groomers are not out.  According to the Ashland County Snowmobile Alliance, before the groomers can go out, the swamps have to be packed. At this time some of the swaps have opened up. It is hopeful the with the cold temps now and in the forecast that the swaps will freeze up. Ride at your own risk to help pack the swamps! At this time the trails are closed to recreational snowmobiling.
