Trail Report – : Superior – Douglas County, Wisconsin – March 21, 2019

Reporter:nikky.farmakes
Trail Conditions: Poor
Snow Cover: Less than 4-6" in most areas.
Date of Report: March 21, 2019
Area Report:

Effective Midnight on Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 we are closing the majority of trails under our management.

Operating on closed trails is both illegal and may jeopardize our ability to use those lands for future seasons.

Due to the recent warm temperatures and significant rainfall the trail base has eroded and the thawing snowpack has resulted in reduced quality trails.

The following Douglas County managed trails remain open at this time: Wild Rivers Trail from the Harroun Road to the CTH A/C Parking Lot

Wild Rivers Trail from the Douglas/Washburn Co. Line to 300 feet north of CTH Y in Gordon Gandy Dancer Trail – MN stateline to Patzau

When leaving Douglas County or operating on trails managed by others within Douglas County, please contact the neighboring county, state, or trail operator to its regulations or status for ATV operation before entering the property.

Thank you to all the members of the Northwest Trails Association for the tremendous amount of work it takes to open and maintain the trail network.

THIS REPORT WAS PREPARED ON MONDAY, MARCH 18TH, 2019.

Due to the deteriorated conditions, all trails are being closed to ATV/UTV operations.

Douglas County Cross Country Ski Trails

All trails maintained by the Douglas County Forestry Department are closed for the season.

Superior Municipal Forest – Slow, but still in good shape despite how warm it has been, a few bad spots. Use caution. (As of 3/20/2019)

After Hours Ski Trail, Brule River State Forest – The main trail system was tracked and range from thin and crumbly to full depth. The skate lanes still have some equipment ruts but are flat and nice in other areas. Sally’s Classic Trail is still tracked from last week. Until the temperatures cool or until there is workable snow, grooming efforts will be suspended. Warm days and cold nights are making it increasingly difficult to maintain a high quality ski experience. (As of 3/19/2019)

Pattison State Park – The overlook trail has been groomed and tracked this week. Warm temperatures and rain have prevented the other trails from being groomed and tracked at this time. There is half depth track throughout the trail system and conditions may change rapidly with the warm weather. (As of 3/18/2019)
