Trail Report – : Oconto County, Wisconsin – January 7, 2022

Reporter:Oconto County Tourism
Trail Conditions: Good
Snow Cover: 6-8
Date of Report: January 7, 2022
Area Report:

Logging is currently in process on both County and Federal Properties. When coming into a logging area, follow the signage and never go under or near logging equipment when they are in use. This s a very dangerous situation, and if it continues, the trail may be shut down or forced to be rerouted. Let’s all be safe and patient when we are on the trails. Logg g equipment has the right of way.

Red Arrow Snowmobile Club –  1/6/22
Red arrow groomed yesterday but with the winds, there may be considerable drifting. We will be out grooming again tonight and through the weekend. All trails are solid and snow-covered.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club – 1/4/22
Chute Pond Snowmobile Trails are open and in good “early season condition,”- which means there may be rough spots, bare spots, dips, ungroomed areas by swamps or water holes. Please take it easy on the starts, stops, and corners- and in general, reduce your speed and be aware of the trail conditions—we ha e a solid base and several light snowfalls on top of the base. Grooming has begun- but in some areas, the surface will not be as smooth as mid-season riding. Some areas have not yet been groomed- use extra caution in these areas. More  specific details follow:

We have an impassable swamp hole north of Cty W, so we have CLOSED the Bonita Rd/ Tunnel trail from INT 311 to INT 320 at the Big Y. Cauti n tape and “Trail Closed” signs mark this area. We are hoping to get this area opened soon.

There is a small trail change as you approach Animal’s in the ditch on Hwy T. Please follow the trail signs. Be aware that loggers work along the Mountain Lakes Rd trail from Hwy 64 north to Star Lake Rd.

The Nicolet State Trail (RR grade) is in good to very good riding condition from Rhode’s Oasis in Breed (gas pump #8 on the map) north to the end of our trail system at INT 605. The N T is open all the way south to Suring (and beyond) and is in fair to good condition until we get more snow.

There is an ungroomed stretch of trail near the bridge between INT 472 and INT 455. Use caution in this area. There is a frozen water hole and a very rough trail east of INT 453. Use extreme caution in this area. There are frozen truck ruts on the Jack Pine Rd trail between INT 451 and the pipeline. Use e trail caution in this area. The north pipeline trail is open and passable from Jack Pine Rd to Crooked Lake but will be a rough ride until we get more snow to fill in the dips.

Our groomer operators and volunteers have spent countless hours getting our trails ready after the recent wind storm for the second time this year. Please respect our trails and other riders. Remem er these are early season conditions- and ride accordingly.

Gillett Sno Riders – 1/6/22
Our entire trail system will be opening tomorrow Friday, January 7, at 8 am! The groomer is out panning today and into the night to get everything finished. The NST is in excellent condition along with all the other trails in the woods.
Fields we cross have filled in nicely and are rated in good condition. Parking at Zippel Park in town is located right on the trail.

Paul Bunyan Riders – 1/4/22
It’s a balmy 7 degrees in Lakewood at 10:00 am. The Tuckers were out last night grooming the trails back into shape after a VERY busy weekend of snowmobiling. I am happy to report that the trails are once again flat and hard. We’re going to give the groomers a rest tonight due to the relatively light traffic today. Bob Passer says he is going to try to groom the swamps tomorrow night, so we will be keeping our fingers crossed that they will make it through so we can open them up to snowmobiling.

The Lakewood Trail Head was slammed with visitors all during the long holiday weekend which put smiles on the faces of our area businesses. I would like to thank all the folks who came up to ride our beautiful trails and visit our area Business Boosters, who support the Paul Bunyan Riders Snowmobile Club. We al o want to remind everyone of our upcoming Snow Fun Day that will be taking place on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Waubee Lake Lodge. The event will run from 2 pm to 7 pm.

BB Joyriders –

B&B Joyriders trails are open. The groomers will be out again this week after the snowfall to get more of the trails packed down. There are spots on the trail that will not be groomed due to unfrozen areas. We op ned the trail from Kelly Lake west to trail int. 415,  here is a spot on this trail that we cannot groom yet. Also, he bypasses the trail around White Potato lake from int. 441 north to 439 will open later this week. This area also may have spots that might not be groomed, due to soft areas. Thank you and ride safe.

Lena – 1/6/22
Trails will open at noon on Thursday, January 6th.  Grooming will start Thursday morning. Expect poor to fair rating with early season conditions.

Oconto Falls – 1/6/22
Oconto Falls Sno Jokers snowmobile trails will open Saturday 1/8/22 at 8 am.  All trails have been groomed and should be set up well.  Trails will be in “early season” condition with some rocks/ruts/dips due to minimal snow.  We do have a couple of areas of concern where extra caution should be taken.

The trail between Garrity Rd and Elm Lawn Rd has not been fully groomed due to the area not being able to support the weight of the groomer.  There is also a spot west of Gray Lake Rd where the groomer broke through and there are some ice chunks sticking out.  This area will have extra markers and caution tape around it.  There is active logging in the county forest, and remember that logging equipment has the right of way, and there will be areas where the loggers plowed the trail.

Chase – CLOSED. 1/6/22
We will be grooming again Saturday morning and reevaluating our trails then. For now, the Chase trails will remain closed due to a lack of snow in some fields.
