Trail Report – : Ely, Minnesota – December 31, 2018

Ely, MN Chamber of Commerce

Reporter:Ely Chamber of Commerce/Explore MN Visitor Center
Trail Conditions: Fair
Snow Cover: 13 inches
Date of Report: December 31, 2018
Area Report:

All state trails are currently being packed and are in poor condition with 6-7 inch bases.  Swamps are not frozen, so groomers are unable to do all sections of the trails.

Ely area trails are rolled to Knotted Pine.  Crews will be out and rolling trails tonight (Monday, Dec 31).  Swamps are not completely frozen, but machines should be able to right through without problem.  Trail bases are 6-7 inches and are in fair condition.

Burntside and Shagawa Lakes have been staked.  Crews hope to do several more lakes in the next day or two.  Lakes surfaces are slush covered.  Please stay on trails – whether in forest areas or on lakes.  The more trails are packed down, the better they freeze.

Also, please use caution when traveling across lakes.  As previously noted stay on established and staked trails.  Ice conditions vary depending on water flow.  If you are not familiar with an area that does not have a trail, please do not risk you or your machine.
