Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 2″-8″

Date of Report: February 20, 2023

Area Report:

Good morning.  Warm and sunnyweather on Saturday didn’t help the trails.  Trails remain open with some bare and very icy conditions.  The good news is, they are forecasting 3″-5″ of snow tonight into Tuesday and more snow Wednesday into Thursday that could produce, as of now, 4″-8″.  This will really help the trails and grooming should start back up if we get these amounts.  Check back later in the week for more updates.  No matter where you ride, always remeber to “Ride Right”

Snowmobile trails have degraded to POOR & not safe.  Here is a statement directly from the President of the Sno-Eagles Snowmobile Club, Keith Nettesheim:

“Trail Report

We’ve been receiving many inquiries if people should come up this weekend and how trail conditions will be.  As of today, all main routes are bare near town and solid ice on routes out of town.

Conditions are POOR.  We do not recommend riding this weekend or until conditions improve.

The temperature is finally falling below freezing, however this is leaving nothing bt ice everywhere making very hazardous conditions.  If you’re coming up for the weekend, there’s plenty of fun going on across the Northwoods with various events, but you’re going to want to leave the sleds parked.  We would rather be honest with you about conditions before you tear up your machines and are highly disappointed.  Grooming operations are on hold until we receive some snow to work with.  There is hope on the horizon with weather systems next week, but it’s too far out to get too excited about.  Be sure to patronize our local establishments and sponsors to show your support.”

Area Report:

Despite the snowfall and do warm weather and unfrozen ground the Kenosha County Trails will remain closed until further notice.

Generally speaking Kenosha County Trails require 4 inches of snow on frozen ground or 6 inches on unfrozen ground. This is to protect crops in many  fields which through the grace of the landwoners allow us to pass through.

Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club Trail Report – Wednesday, 2/15/2023

At 8:00 a.m. it’s 9 degrees out with sunny skies and a high of 23 degrees for today.

Well, Mother Nature has taken a toll on the Vilas County snowmobile trail system. On Thursday, the Vilas County Parks Department issued a public service announcement (see below) asking everyone to refrain from using the Vilas County snowmobile trails until more snow is received. The main concern is for your safety, your snowmobiles well-being, and protecting landowners property.

That being said, as snow conditions vary across the county, Boulder Junctions groomers were out early on Thursday and groomed our entire trail system at the same time the PSA was released.

Our trails leading into and through town are in bad shape, but once you get away from town, they improve. The trails have an icy base with snow cover, inside corners may be bare, and water puddles are now frozen smooth. Our worst area is on 15S before and after crossing Stevenson Creek. It is passable, but is down to one lane of traffic.

Be safe this weekend and check for an updated report on Monday, February 20.

Trail Conditions: Fair

Date of Report: February 17, 2023

Area Report:

Washburn County snowmobile trails still remain open at this time. Area Clubs & County Staff are reporting fair conditions after receiving rain and warmer weather earlier this week. Grooming efforts are underway to break up ice that accumulated throughout the trails which has also resulted in slippery spots. Please ride with caution and stay on designated trail surfaces.

Area Report:

Hello Riders!

Several of our groomers have been out and will continue through tomorrow. Many have been out in the grooming equipment as well as on snowmobiles to see from that perspective as well. We also have discussed and gathered trail condition info from many out riding the trails.

The consensus from the information gathered is that the wooded trails are flat. The ones that have been groomed (you can view on GTS app) the groomers have chipped up and pulled up some snow from the surface as well as pulled some from sides into corners as much as possible.

They report those trails are pretty good but with a lot of icy spots.  There is still a lot of snow, but the rain and warm weather made a hard and icy surface on the trails; so, while rideable today please do so with extreme caution. Tomorrow, more groomers will go out as the temperatures will warm up and the snow will soften making it easier as the hard surface will soften and loosen allowing the groomer to blade and cut some of that up and pull from the sides and pull the snow better in the drag.

Trails are rideable but again, be cautious of ice, take corners easy and allow stopping distance. You may also experience some overheating, there are many reasons to overheating; the style of riding, the weight of the rider, the machine, you will need to be aware of this and get your sled into some snow and keeping your track lubricated and your machine cool. Ice scratchers are wonderful tools as well in these conditions.

Road trails and those near the roads will have some bare and icy spots due to exposure to the weather, run off from salt/sand trucks and heavy traffic. Lakes unfortunately have no snow; the warmup and rain created an ice sheet. If you must ride on lakes please do so with extreme caution and at slow speeds, getting from point A to point B.

Tomorrow’s forecasted warmer temps will be helpful with the conditions, so your weekend will not be lost.  Ride safe and enjoy!
