Trail Conditions Poor

Crazy weather marches on.  Hit 50 yesterday.  And the snow continues to melt.

Trail Boss Brian reports that “all grooming has been suspended until weather permits”.

Here’s a report from the trail from one rider:

We rode Alt 13S to Three Lakes and stopped at Sportsmans’ to visit Joe & Lisa. It’s a little warm.  Trails were a lot smoother than we expected but lack of snow creates issues.  There were some muddy open spots close to Sportsmans’ in a big open area.  On the way back still mostly smooth but the evil sun is doing a lot of damage.

Another posted this photo in the Alvin/Nelma area yesterday.  Alvin/Nelma is east & a bit north of Phelps & west & a bit north of Eagle River trails.

Both Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are safe by the orange reflective barrels. Surface slush. Stay by the barrels as there can be danger out there.

Trail Report: Conover, Wisconsin – February 18, 2017

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 8″ & melting fast

Date of Report: February 18, 2017

Area Report:

We have hit mid 50’s with sunshine both Friday & Saturday. All exposed areas took a beating, road crossings and most road routes are bare. I’m rating the trails poor with some areas unridable and some wooded areas fair.

Vilas trails are technically open but I can only advise staying off the trails. Lakes are OK but slushy, stay by the barrels. Temps are forecast in the 40’s & 50’s until Thursday with a cool down and then snow on Friday/Saturday.

All grooming operations are suspended until the weather changes.

News and Reports:

It crossed my mind that for those of you that have never snowmobiled in Vilas or surrounding, it is unlike areas further south. We really have nearly zero farm field crossings. Most riding is in the woods, some trails are on old rail grades & there are lots of lake crossings. But, be prepared to travel a distance to the next stop, especially along the northern portions of the county. Food is hard to find on Tuesdays, carry a snack.

Please stay on the trails; Trespassing is the fastest way to loose trails. Don’t forget you need a WI trail permit to ride the state’s groomed trail system. Aggressive riding causes more trail damage than slower, less aggressive riding. Ride right & be safe.

Trail Report: Sayner, Wisconsin – February 18, 2017

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: Need Snow

Date of Report: February 18, 2017

Area Report:

There just isn’t much good I can report as the weather forecasts were correct and warm weather hit the area yesterday. There is good riding where the trails are shaded by the woods but getting there requires riding over a lot of slop and dirt. There is a lot of bare pavement on road routes. Lakes are slushy. Stay by the barrels when crossing.

The forecast is calling for the same warm weather until next Thursday when a cool down is supposed to start. Then on Friday, the prognosticators are calling for 5 to 8 inches. That certainly is not a guarantee as too many storms, as they get closer, can track more to the north or south than anticipated. We’ll keep an eye on that one.

Trail Report: Rhinelander, Wisconsin – February 17, 2017

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: getting thin

Date of Report: February 17, 2017

Area Report:

It is amazing what a day of full sun and 53 degrees will do.  From trails that were just rode yesterday, to tonight the conditions have significantly degraded.  The exposed trails are snirty with bare spots now.  The road crossings are bare.  I’m sure there are some good spots to ride, but there will be poor spots on most any trail route.

The corners are becoming blown out and icy.  The groomers have been parked to preserve the base that’s out there.

The only positive spin I can put on it, is there is still 5 weeks left in the season, we may be able to salvage some of it with cold and snow in the future.
