Braaaaap!
All snowmobile trails in the Cable Area and Bayfield County are officially open as of December 15th, 2017.

As of Tuesday, January 2nd, all trails are groomed with a 3-4 in. base. Trails are in fair to good condition throughout our area and all area swamps have been groomed at this point too.

There is a detour on trail 90 between Old Grade and Federal Rd. due to logging. Please follow the signs.

We also have a trail closure at Trail 70 and Trail 73 due to trespass issues. Trail 70 East is closed at Randysek Rd. To get in and out of the downtown Cable area, please use Randysek Road from south of town to Spruce Street (cross Hwy M and go 1 block north), head West on Spruce to access the alleyway between Rondeau’s and Triple G; Hwy M is open from the alleyway to Rocky’s. This is a new reroute and will not be on your maps.

Area Report:

The good news is with the cold snap, the wet areas have froze tight. The club was able to pack all of the trails with the groomers in the last few days. All of the trails have been groomed. There is some good riding that can be had on the trail system.
We need more snow to significantly improve the trail conditions. Where the trail base is flat, the trails are good. The groomers are making the regularly scheduled runs, but there isn’t a lot they can do with the trail base currently on hand.
The swampy areas and spots where the trail base is uneven, need more snow to smooth things out.
The lakes are marked and snowmobilers are advised to stay close to the barrels when crossing lakes.
Stay on marked trails at all times.

Trail Report – : Superior – Douglas County, Wisconsin – January 3, 2018

Area Report:

As is typical for this time of year, certain trail segments can be opened and others are not ready yet due to wetland crossings and/or have restrictions due to private land easements. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property. Please review the information below carefully before trail riding and confirm that you are using open trails.

Please note, certain trails or only segments of trails may be open at this time. We anticipate frequent updates as the clubs begin grooming and report on trails they’ve checked. In all areas where winter recreation trails are closed, our clubs are actively working to get the trails open.

Trail Report 1/3/2018

NE Quadrant
As of Tuesday, January 2, 2018 ATV traffic is not recommended on year-round trails at this time. Trails are a little short of snow in some areas. Early season caution should be used.

All Brule River Rider Trails are open except for a small section from Bennett Road to The Wild Rivers Trail (Trail 35.) A detour is available using the Bennett Road.

Logging updates: There is a logging operation in progress off Trails 27, Bayfield 24, Trail 4 north of Lake Nebagamon off Degerman Road, and along the east/north of Hawthrone. These logging operations cross our trail system several times, and signs have been upgraded in that area. There is a logging job west of Lackson Road that is causing a bit of confusion, signage has been updated. There is also a small private logging operation ongoing by the Covered Wagon in Hawthorne.

Problem areas: Trail 4 between Bennett Road and The Wild Rivers Trail (Trail 35) there is a detour using the Bennett Road. The Wild Rivers Trail (Trail 35) is open to traffic but conditions are poor going north from Trail 4. Trail 365 is recommended for local traffic only, not lake traffic.

Trail 1 is open and groomed from Trail 2 to the Brule River. Status is unknown for Bayfield County.

Tri County Corridor (Trail 2) is groomed from Superior to Brule and has been groomed.

Trail 2 (TCC) along with Trails 1 & 27/27A have many sections in good condition; however, there are a few areas with thin snow cover.

Trail 2B is groomed and somewhat clear.

Trail 4 is open except between Bennett road and The Wild Rivers Trail (Trail 35). There is a detour using Bennett Road.

Trail 6 is open and packed going into Lake Nebagamon, and is groomed going west of Lake Nebagamon. More grooming is scheduled for this week.

Trail 18 to Barnes has been groomed by Bayfield County line.

Bayfield B 24 has been groomed. Bayfield County has groomed to the County Line from Iron River.

Trail 24 is open to and from Poplar and is groomed from Middle River Road North to Poplar and a portion behind the Gravel Pit. More grooming scheduled for this week.

Trail 27/27A is open and groomed from Brule to St. Croix Lake, please note that the groomer has skipped around wet holes South of Brule.

The Wild Rivers Trail (Trail 35) is open, but the snow is very thin in a lot of places. The Clubs are investigating snow levels for grooming.

Trail 235 is open and grooming is scheduled for this week.

Trail 635 is open to local traffic. Inquire locally for ice conditions on Lakes.

Between Brule, Trail 24, Poplar and Lake Nebagamon, there has been some grooming with a few areas that have been passed over including holes that would cause trouble for the grooming machines. Grooming is scheduled for all of Trail 4 this week from Brule to the Warming Shelter.

NW Quadrant

All trails in this quadrant are open at this time. The trails are all in very early season condition. Please use caution as brushing and grooming operations are ongoing and equipment is present on the trails.

Logging operations continue on Trail 4 and Trail 41 between Bear Creek Bridge and Wanek Road. There is not a lot of snow left in this section due to the logging activity. On Trail 4 between Brietzman Lake Road and Big Balsam Road are also experiencing logging activity.

All trails have been groomed with the exception of Trail 66 from Trail 2 to the Minnesota state line, Trail 2 from Finn Road to the Minnesota state line, and Trail 4/41 from the warming shack to Erickson Creek. We anticipate grooming of these trails on Thursday, January 4. Snow is thin in and near Superior. Brushing is ongoing in the areas not accessible until this time of year. Again, please use caution and watch for equipment on the trails.

Please note – the parking lot located off Tuff Road is closed for the season and there is no trail access from the lot.

SW Quadrant

Trail 5 is open and has been packed, but is not groomed.

Trail 9 has a beaver dam at Hunter’s Trail and has been ridden over by the Trucker and a dozer is expected there this week or next. Trail 9 is in good condition from Radigan Dam to the warming shack.

Trail 935 is packed and cleared from the State Line (Gandy Dancer Trail), however, use caution.

SE Quadrant
The trails in this quadrant are all open except for Trail 41 N. Trails 5, 541, 35S, and 41B are currently being groomed. Trail 7, 27, 27B, 27C are groomed and in good early season condition. Trail 41S is currently ungroomed. Please use caution and watch out for downed or leaning trees.

Trail 3 is open and is partially groomed.

Trails 217 and Trail 17
Trail 217 is in good condition and is groomed.
Trail 17 from Cabin Lane to Fowler Circle is open, groomed, and in good condition.
Trail 17 south of Fowler Circle to Highway 27 is open and groomed. A logging operation is happening on this trail for about a mile.

Douglas County Ski Trails
The Douglas County Cross Country Ski Trails have been groomed and tracked last week. We anticipate additional grooming this week. All trails are in good early season condition.

As of 12/22, The Superior Municipal Forest Cross Country Ski Trails have been packed, however, the snow we have received has been dry and has packed down to just a few inches of height with a good amount of debris showing through. The trails have not been tracked. All trails EXCEPT BLUE are open, but all trails are reported to be in only fair condition at this time. The Blue Trail has quite a bit of debris and will need more snow in order to open.

Area Report:

Lincoln County snowmobile trails in Zone I are OPEN. Trails south of State Highway 86,Corridor 17 south of intersection #30,Corridor 15 south of intersection #28 and trails 51 and G in the Gleason area remain CLOSED.

All trails in Zone 2 and Zone 3 remain CLOSED in Lincoln County.

Please be aware of trail closed signs, stay on marked trails ONLY and respect private land. Use extreme caution and expect early season riding conditions throughout the trail system.

Trails designated as winter ATV trails are open for ATV use at noon on January 4,2018. All trails are closed for ATV use when the temperature is above 28 degrees F.

All trails in Oneida County are OPEN. As always, the Oneida County Forestry, Land, & Recreation Department recommends staying on clearly marked trails. Trail Report – : Mercer, Wisconsin – January 3, 2018

Temperatures are below zero with wind chill which we are still expecting to stay for the next couple of days. Starting on Sunday, the 7^th, we should start to see double digit temperatures again. Last night we received three inches of fresh snow, but we are hoping for more in the future!

Trails are thin, but we have a good base in our area. Most riders have been quite happy with the early season conditions. Trails 12B and 17 to Manitowish Waters have been groomed for the first time this year without any issues; guess the cold weather did its job. Trail 12 is not yet open to Swamp Creek, it is passable but not yet groomed.

Trail report for January 3, 2018, Fair to good condition. Looks like we got a little bit of snow last night but could always use more. We have been out grooming and the cold weather has saved the snow we have gotten from melting. We may get a little lake effect snow in the next day or two but no significant amounts. The cold is supposed to stay for a while longer. Use precautions to prevent cold weather injuries. Use caution in active logging operations where low snow conditions exist. Be careful in the corners on the trail. They are getting bare and icy. Groomers can be out on the trails any time. Take all directions from the groomer. Please stay on the marked trails. Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Trail Report – : Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – January 3, 2018

Area Report:

Trail 8, going west of Brimley, is fair.

The groomer was run in town Saturday.

The groomers were run on both the Spile Dam Trail 480 and the Soo to Kinross Trail 49 Friday and Saturday. Good snow on both, but not good enough for a smooth ride yet. Not many wet spots.

February 1, help break the Guinness World Record for the longest snowmobile parade.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail 8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all the towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition. A little bit of water is frozen.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition. Watch for drifts in open areas.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic! Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition. No water.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. Watch for wet areas; has only been packed twice but they will try again Friday.

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition.

Lots of wet spots that have not seen the groomer yet. Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 1- 2 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. Watch for trucks on the trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in poor condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross. Water holes and lots of snow. Trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging is going on, too.

The Downtown Trail is signed, but snow and barrels on the Portage Ave. Bridge have not been placed yet.

World Record Attempt

On February 1st, 2018, come to Sault Ste. Marie to help us try to break the world record for the largest snowmobile parade! We need at least 1,048 snowmobiles on February 1, 2018, the Thursday before the 50th Annual International 500 Snowmobile Race.

The $5.00 registration fee per sled is used to cover the costs incurred to break the record. The cost is $10.00 if you sign up the day of the event.

All snowmobile operators must have a valid driver’s license and a registered sled.

Hello Riders!

The 2018 Season has officially kicked off with a great holiday week!! Sawyer County trails are open with about a 6″ base and in good condition! Groomers are out and most lakes in the county are staked! A few in the south western part of the county such as Long Lake, Big Lake Chetec and Big & Little Sissabagama are NOT YET STAKED but should be this week. Lake Hayward is currently NOT SAFE to stake yet but we will continue to update on the progress of that lake as well as the other four. Otherwise, all other lakes are staked and ready! We have ice and we have snow! The forecast shows some snow in the area this evening and the high temps this week actually reaching just above 0 and a high of 10 degrees on Saturday, it will be perfect riding weather!

A couple of trail closure and reroutes to update on. Trail 27/5 from the Tuscobia south to the Price County line is closed. And Trail 63 from Bodecker Rd (just north of Seeley) to a small portion of Trail 70 in Bayfield County just into the town of Cable is closed. The reroute for this is at Bodecker Rd take 111 to Trail 8 to get into the town of Cable. Trail 70 south east of Cable is open.

Bayfield County is open and reported to be in good condition. Price County is open and in fair condition. Douglas, Washburn and Ashland counties are partially opened. Rusk County is closed.

Our temps for the next several days are going to be only in the single digits for highs and below zero for our lows, with snow. With all the cold temps we have had our water holes are firming up, you will still encounter some places that still are wet. Please be patient and use caution when riding.

PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS. WE HAVE BEEN GETTING COMPLAINTS THAT SOME HAVE NOT BEEN STAYING ON TRAILS, RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN LOSE EASEMENT FOR OUR TRAIL SYSTEM SO PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS!!!!!!

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority reports:
01/01/2018

We have received a foot of fresh snow in the last few days. The trails southeast of us have not gotten as much snow as we have. Overall conditions are very good to fair, fair trails just have thin snow coverage. Trails are icy especially on corners so please use caution.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:
Overall rating is good to very good. Thin spots on trail exist, but overall the trail is flat and smooth. The rail-bed trail ENDS on the east side of the Keystone Bridge. The club grooms the bridge to maintain it for local access. The “old” trail to Wakefield is closed east of Verona Rd. and anyone caught riding it will be ticketed.

Trial 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:
Overall rating is fair to very good. Nearly all water holes are gone except for one east of Blackjack. The hill climbs to Indianhead Big Snow Resorts are snow packed and smooth. Corners are icy due to thin snow, so use caution.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:
Overall rating is good. The pipeline from Trail 2 & 8 intersection has thin snow and some now frozen water holes. Use caution. Use caution 2 miles west of Heart Lake Road, there is a culvert clogged which is causing a trench across the trails. Plans are to get out and fix it this week. Snow depth will diminish as you travel from Wakefield to Marenisco.

Trail 8 from Bingos to Tula Crossing:
Overall rating is good. CAUTION!!!! Trail 8 from GRTA turn around at Underwood Tower Road and east is not groomed. The Gogebic Area Groomers are working on getting this area to freeze. Please use extreme caution in this area, it is frozen water holes.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River(WI):
Overall rating is poor to fair. There is a large water hole a few miles north of Walmart, follow the bypass trail riders have made. Sections of this trail are thin and rocky, so use caution. You will also encounter some active logging near the Lake Road area, please go slow, logging trucks have the right of way.

Trial 11S:
Overall rating is open and is good to poor. There are sections where the snow was used up to freeze the mud/water in but are small areas. There are thin spots where we need more snow to cover up the wheeler ruts. Please use caution on this trail.

Lake Gogebic Area Groomer Report: Reported on 1/02/2018

The cold temps are doing a good job firming up the wet spots, but as you may have seen on the Gogebic Area Groomers Facebook page, we still have some places that still are wet (8 West).

Overall, trail conditions are very good to fair, with the good to very good being in the Bergland area and North and the fair trails with thin snow coverage are those on the south end of the Lake. We are hoping that this snow helps us out on the South end.

Trail highlights as of 1/2/18:

Trail 13 North of Bergland is reported as very good – twice the snow and base as the South end of the Lake.

Trail 1 going South from White Pine is also reported as very good.

Trail 1 & 8 North of Bergland is rough and Trail 1 on the west side of Lake Gogebic going south.

Trail 102 has had a lot of traffic but will be groomed tonight.

Trail 8 west of M64 we had a groomer go through last week – please be patient as we get this back in shape.

Trail 13 and there is little base and conditions are reported as fair.

Trail 1 North of West Shore Resort is closed due to logging.

U.P. Thunder Riders of Watersmeet Groomers Report:

Groomers are running on a regular schedule. The trails are grooming up nicely.

Trail 2 east – fair to good
Trail 3 north – fair to good
Trail 2 west – fair to good
Trail 13 south – fair to good
