THE GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY REPORTS:
01/12/2018
We saw incredible traffic this past weekend, Saturday all trails were groomed. All trails have a great base, corners can be icy so please use caution.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:
Overall rating is good to very good. Thin spots on trail exist, by the transfer station east of Walmart with icy corners. Slow down and use caution. The rail-bed trail ENDS on the east side of the Keystone Bridge. The club grooms the bridge to maintain it for local access. The “old” trail to Wakefield is closed east of Verona Rd. and anyone caught riding it will be ticketed.

Trial 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:
Overall rating is good to fair. This will be groomed this evening. The trail is thin in the lower elevations and corners are icy. Please stay on your side of the trail, many near-miss accidents due to sleds on the wrong side of the trail. Please ride safely.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:
Overall rating is good to very good. This trail will be groomed ASAP. Watch for icy corners from Wakefield to US HWY 2 trail crossing. Snow is thinner as you travel from Wakefield to Marenisco.

Trail 8 from Bingos to Tula Crossing:
Overall rating is good to very good. This was last groomed on the 14th. It is a wide seasonal county road that is not plowed and makes a fun trail to ride. Trail 8 where the GRTA groomer turns around is finally groomed by the Gogebic Area Groomers.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River(WI):
Overall rating is good to very good. This trail was groomed on the 14th. You will also encounter some active logging near the Lake Road area, please go slow, logging trucks have the right of way. Please remember to stay on the trail!!!! Do not go off the trails and ride on farmers fields, this can lose easement for our trails. This trail is very scenic so enjoy!!

Trial 11S:
Overall rating is fair to very good. There are still some thin spots on this trail and still needs some brushing. Keep speeds slow as you travel the southern half of it, once you cross the bridge within 2 miles there are some rough spots.

Area Report:

Trail report for January 15, 2018:  Boulder Junction area trails are in GOOD condition. With the added snow last night and the continued snow today it will help to freshen up our trails. We had a lot of traffic over the weekend and will be out grooming with the new added snow. The corners can still get icy and bare. The active logging operations still have very little snow. It should warm up a little and be better for riding the trail. Groomers can be out at any time. Please use caution and take all directions from the groomer driver. They are out there to help better your ride. Give them a break and a thumbs up when you see them. Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – January 15, 2018

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 10 to 12 inches in the woods

Date of Report: January 15, 2018

Area Report:

All riders I spoke with that rode over the weekend reported great trails. We did get some new snow which started last night. While it appears that the heaviest snow went to the south, we did get about 2 inches. It is supposed to snow again this afternoon with another 1 to 2 inches in the forecast. Even the 2 inches we already have on the ground is great for maintaining the trails. Its actually better than getting a lot of snow. Too much snowfall at one time is when you get the deep moguls. It looks right now like we have another short warm up coming at the end of the week, but right now, it does not look like it will be more than a couple days of mid 30s. IF we don’t get much sun on these days, it won’t be too big of a deal. The trails should hold just fine. The areas that get hurt the most with these little warmups, are town trails, which always take a beating on weekends no matter what.

As always, ride with caution and be ready for icy corners. Many corners can start the day snow covered but end up icy with traffic.

Please continue to be cautious on the lakes. The weight of more snow can force the ice down which pushes water up through cracks and form a slush pocket. The slush pockets can come and go.

News and Reports:

There are logging operations in the following locations: Trail 9 between Hwy 70 (TIN 364) and Ross Lake Rd (TIN 225), Trail 7 between Wharton Lake Rd (TIN 218) and Old K (Tin 217), and Trail 7 between Hwy K (TIN 216) and Lake Laura Rd (TIN 214). There is also logging in the Jean Lake Rd area of Trail 7 North, between TINS 227 & 800. That logging should be in the woods off the trail.

(TIN = Trail Intersection Numbers)

Please watch out for these logging areas. Slow down and stay out of the way of the loggers. DO NOT hassle the loggers. They have the right to close down sections of any trail they are logging near or using. If they get hassled too much, that is exactly what they will do – shut that trail down. The logging operations can run at anytime of the day or night. Loggers use some of the trails to drive in and out. So please be watchful in logging areas for trucks on the trail.

We had snow over night and it is still coming down but the bad news is our trails will not open under 4″ of snow, so PLEASE STAY OFF OF TRAILS until we have over 4″ of snow. We have a lot of good land owners and we don’t want to upset them and lose our trails. I will update if we get enough snow to open trails

ALL SNOWMOBILE TRAILS ARE OPEN
GOOD CONDITION

Lots of sledding traffic this weekend! Even with that the trails are in terrific shape!   SNOW started later last night.  About 1 or 2 inches on the ground this morning.  SNOW showers off and on all day today.  So I’m thinking 3 or 4 inches new SNOW when all is said & done.  Have moved the traffic to GOOD Condition.  No more Early Riding.  Today it is going to be 20 so riding will be great!

Grooming overnight included trails 10W, 13N, 7, 70W, Kathan Inn & Paintball trails which are off Trail 17S, 10E was groomed to the one way section.  From there only the side heading east (south side of the road) was groomed out to Anvil Lake area.  Look fantabulous!

Here are some trail reminders:

  • Trail 1N has a logging operation in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake.  Clearly marked with signs.
  • Wisconsin River Trail – 10W/13N  There are rough spots but it is frozen tight.
  • Same for Manske Swamp – 3N.  Just like Wisconsin River Trail there are rough spots but it is frozen tight.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are now both marked and officially open.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  Very hard surface.  No slush.  Reminder the Catfish Lake Loop to Lumpy’s is NO LONGER a trail.

If you are riding zip on over to the “grade” to check out the 2018 Eagle River Area Fire Department ICE CASTLE!!!!  Located adjacent to the downtown “grade” trail by the Historic Railroad Grade.  The lights installed change colors.  Check out this link Eagle River Ice Castle to check out more photos.  Darn pretty!

This morning at the Derby Track is the annual Military Snowmobile Ride.  AWSC way of saying thank to all who have given to us.  Congratulations to Justin Ernst from Rhinelander, WI on his Vintage Championship win! Thursday begins the World Championship Derby.  For more information check out DerbyTrack.com

Traffic is very high so please stay on the right side to stay safe!  There can be some hard icy in the corners so slow down.  Again it’s going to be 20 my lunch time.  So boy howdy get out there & ride!

Keep Dancin’!

See ya on the trails!
