Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – February 20, 2018

Reporter:Price County Tourism Department

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 3 – 8 inch trail base

Date of Report: February 20, 2018

Area Report:

All trails are open and in excellent to very good condition. Due to recent warm weather, the snow base may be thin on trails near towns, in open areas, and at road crossings; road routes may be bare.  The trails received a couple inches of fresh snow Monday.  The trails are being groomed on a regular basis.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding including the Flambeau Trail System, Solberg Trail, and Georgetown Trail. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are also open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is 28 degrees or colder.

You can order visitor information or maps from the Price County Tourism Department website, www.pricecountywi.net, or call 715-339-4505, plus you can listen to recorded trail reports or talk to the friendly Tourism Department staff.

Here are your current conditions:
We had a little over a inch of sloppy mess yesterday. Not what we were looking for, but everything helps. Groomers are out daily. Trails are still in good condition. A hard icy base helps. Corners are icy with a little dirt in some places. Road trails have taken a beating from the sun and town plows. Trails will definitely be rideable again this weekend. Some snow is in the long term forecast. Get out and ride now before it’s gone.

Don’t forget about our Gun And meat raffle this weekend at Bonnie’s Lakeside.

Lakes are all marked, please stay close to barrels.

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: minimal

Date of Report: February 20, 2018

Area Report:

I held off on this report hoping to get any kind of snow from this past weather report.  There is not much to tell you.  We still have a hard, flat frozen ice base, but barely received a dusting of snow on top of that!  There is not enough there to keep your sled lubricated.

We all need to do the snow dance!

TRAILS FAIR  ON AVERAGE
Plenty of GOOD too!

Some SNOW yesterday afternoon & last night.  Maybe 2-3 inches east of Eagle River.  Not as much as I would have liked, but we will take it.  It’s 22 at 7:20am moving to a high of 32. Overcast all day!

Yesterday was the Celebrate Wisconsin Snowmobiling VIP dignitary ride.  Over 70 riders in 6 groups.  All the trails we rode were groomed the night before our ride.  Found Trail 17N in pretty good shape with the usual snirt on the north side of the road section of that trail.  Manske Swamp trail was smooth & snow covered for the most part. 10W/13N thinner SNOW with icy blown spots. The One Way 13 Trail was filled with lots of white SNOW and smooth.  13S from the Buckatabon Shelter was mostly SNOW covered with some icy corners.  10W off of 13S was the thinnest.  Also grainy, snirty & icy.  When we hopped onto 7 toward Eagle River there was plenty of white SNOW again and trails smooth.  70W heading toward Eagle River was thin & icy on the high ridge area that is across the highway from the Wisconsin River.  Great view from up there.  In the woods 70W was better but still could use more SNOW & is icy.  The section from Cloverland Rd to the highway crossing from the south side to the north side had SNOW but it was snirty.  The last leg on the north side to the Eagle River Inn & Resort was SNOW covered.  From the Eagle River Inn to Trail 13N/3 intersection behind the Dairy Queen was in not good shape.  Very snirty, ice & thin of SNOW. The “grade” back to the Derby Track is in pretty good shape.  SNOW covered.  Our ride into town & back on the “grade” and 10E had all sorts of conditions.  The “grade” was EXCELLENT both in & back.  10E on the north side heading to town is a combination of SNOW covered, ice, snirt & even few spots of dirt.  10E on the south side heading home is much better.  All SNOW covered. All trails could use more SNOW.  About an inch or so today & a bit of “wintery mix” that iced our helmet shields.  Popped my shield open for most of the day.

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Minimal grooming due to the logging operation.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  No surface slush.  Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open.  Please do not trespass on private land.
