“Hey Barry, we just hit the trails from Bay Road to Boulder Junction and they were awesome!!!!!” this post was from Facebook from a local rider this morning
A couple inches of fresh snow overnight has helped immensely!  Colder nights and mostly overcast with a chance of snow daily through the weekend.   This might be one of the last good weekends to get out and ride.

News and Reports:

A big thank you to the Manitowish Waters Chamber for mailing maps out for us and their help in reporting trail conditions.  Also a  huge thank you to the groomer operators who volunteer their time to make our trails the best they can be!

Snowmobile Information:

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.Manitowish Waters , Wisconsin - Snowmobiling Conditions & News

The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. With Minocqua/Woodruff to our south, St. Germain/Eagle River to our southeast, Lake Gogebic to our north, Presque Isle/Winchester to our northeast, Mercer and Hurley to our northwest and Lac du Flambeau/Price County to our west, our area residents and guests can choose from a variety of daily or overnight destinations for scenic riding with excellent pit stops along the way.

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters maintain an active grooming schedule for the area’s trail system. Coordinated efforts with the surrounding communities provide continuous smoothly-groomed trails in this northwest sector. The Sno-Skeeters own and operate some of the newest grooming equipment on the market today. Support the club by attending their special events or contributing to the “trail pigs” at local establishments along the trails. Or show your support by becoming a member!

Enjoy, and please ride responsibly and safely!

Area Report:

All of the Washburn County snowmobile trails are OPEN! Trails are in great condition with a 7 to 13 inch base. Over night we received 6 to 7 inches of fresh powder with more snow still falling because of the timing of the new snow, all trails may not be groomed right away. Please be aware that the base might be a little slim at road crossings with a snowy dirt mixture before receiving this fresh snow. Always use caution on the trails as volunteers are out grooming daily to keep them in the great condition they are already in. Enjoy the trails!

Date of Report: March 6, 2018

Area Report:

Groomers out overnight and trails in fair to good shape yet. Road shoulders are bare. Trails in woods are still good to excellent! They are icy and road shoulders are bare. Less snow base around Kinross area, without new snow they will not last much longer. We will continue grooming as needed for traffic and snow conditions.  All are calling for temps in mid-30’s during the day but getting down to low 20’s overnight.  Maybe some snow mid-week.

Follow us on Facebook, too.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.  Make sure you lock your vehicles and trailers.

If you are staying in the Sault please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business.  Please do that in all towns you visit.  The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods.  10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 4 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 4 inches -Trail is in good condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors.  It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449.  It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition.

Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

THE GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY REPORTS:

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:
Overall rating: FAIR
Last groomed 3/2. From the Iron Belle Train Trestle (east of the transfer station horseshoe loop) and east to Bessemer the trail has on and off thin spots. Water has pooled and made a slushy (night time icy) center strip. Around Walmart, we are working to cover an approximate 50′ long bare spot that is about 2-3′ wide. Lots of snow was drug over it last night and will continue tonight.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:
Overall rating: POOR.
Last groomed 3/2. Conditions are good from Ramsay Crossing US HWY 2 intersection all the way to Indianhead. From Indianhead to Wakefield the trail is poor with very thin snow in spots. There is a 1/2 mile stretch as you come into Wakefield that is down to dirt.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:
Overall Rating: FAIR.
Groomed 3/2. Lots of snow on the trail. As you near Marenisco there are some on/off thin spots. Nothing bare.

Trail 8 from Bingo’s to Tula Crossing:
Overall Rating: FAIR.
Last groomed 3/2. Trail has lots of snow on it. We have some big rollers we need a few more passes to cut down but the trail is flat, wide and corners are smooth! Trail 8 on GRTA system is on Old Michigan 28, a wide seasonal county road that is not plowed and makes a fun trail to ride. It does see the most traffic as it is the fastest way to Lake Gogebic/Keweenaw Peninsula so usually by the end of the day it is the first to get bumpy. We do hit it daily though to keep on top of it when weather allows.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):
Overall Rating: FAIR
Last Groomed 2/27. Lots of snow. We recommend doing an “Out and Back” as the Wisconsin Trail 3 / 2 we are told is hit or miss. As you depart the Montreal River Gorge the snow diminishes (with the elevation decline) but there is plenty of snow to make your way into Wisconsin. The Driftwood Bar on County Highway A has excellent burgers!! There are many scenic overlooks on this trail that riders should be on the lookout for! Bald Mountain / Powers Road Lake Superior Northern Overlook, Bald Mountain Southern viewing overlook, The Montreal River Gorge & Superior Falls are all spectacular. Be safe in these areas! This trail is an incredible ride and we are so happy to see riders out on it! Please remember to stay on the trail in the farm fields! So much work and money has been put into this trail we cannot risk losing it. The last half mile from high-line to Lake road is plowed for logging, ride cautiously.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):
Overall Rating: FAIR
Last groomed 2/26. The first 2 miles of the trail as it heads south towards Wisconsin from Trail 2 is plowed due to logging. Please yield to all commercial truck traffic. Trail is in great shape and is groomed from the Vilas County Wisconsin Line to Trail 2 completely, regularly. There are still a few thin areas and areas that need more brushing but the trail is fantastic. Please enjoy this reopened trail responsibly, thousands of 100% volunteer hours were logged to open this! Keep speeds slow as you travel the southern half of it, once you cross the bridge within 2 miles there are some rough spots. They are snow covered, but we need more snow to fill in the uneven trail until we can repair it next summer.

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA GROOMER REPORT

Monday, March 5, 2018
Groomers were out over the weekend and they will be out again tonight. Current weather forecasts are across the board as John Dee’s forecast is calling for 2-6 inches of snow over the next 2 days, but local weather is showing about an inch or so. The riders that we had in-house over the weekend indicated that trails “were not TOO bad” and conditions are better than the temps are showing. Trails are deteriorating as you get into Bergland, and we do need an influx of new snow. 10 days of freezing and thawing have made for thin and icy trails, and groomers are filling bare spots with their “stockpiles”. If we don’t get the forecasted snow – you may want to trailer in or out. We are fortunate that our Groomers are resourceful and knowledgeable as they are keeping our trails in the best “late season” condition that they can so that we can enjoy for as long as we can! We’ll update you later this week.
Here’s what we got:
Trail 13 South – very good shape with very few bare spots.
Trail 1 S: groomed last night – good condition. Little to no bare spots.
1 North – snow covered; fair to good.
Trails in town – not good
East Shore Road is bare – not good travel.
8 East is bare in several spots; travel past Ewen is completely bare.

U.P. THUNDER RIDERS OF WATERSMEET GROOMERS REPORT:

Groomer Report
Groomers ran the whole trail system Friday March 2 and will not be running again until we get more snow. Our trail conditions range from very good to poor call it “end of the season conditions” Everything is rideable and the trails are open until March 31 we just don’t have enough snow to keep grooming at this time.

Trail 2 east of Watersmeet – to trail 107 – Fair/good – snirty/dirty as you leave watersmeet
Trail 3 north of trail 2 to bond falls – fair – roadside section right as you turn off trail 2 is bare, the rest of the trail has icy areas and icy/dirty corners
Trail 3 north of Bond falls – good – icy corners
Trail 3 south of Watersmeet to WI – good -this trail gets tons of traffic and it gets rough between groomings use caution over the bridges
Trail 2 west of Watersmeet – good – holding up much better than you’d think, there is a wet area about 20miles west of Watersmeet where water is on the trail there are signs so please use caution
Trail 13 south of trail 2 – good – icy/dirty corners

PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN THE CLUB LOSING EASEMENT OF THAT TRAIL AND YOU POSSIBLE GETTING A TICKET…..

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Hard base in some areas – Some crystallized base – Some frozen dirt – Best riding out of town

Date of Report: March 6, 2018

Area Report:

March 6, 2018 – 7:17am

VILAS COUNTY TRAILS ARE OPEN
Snowmobile Trails Can Remain Open Until Midnight March 31st
Conditions permitting

Woke up to a very thin schiff of SNOW overnight.  23 degrees right now with a high of 27 today.  It is SNOWING fine SNOW right now.  Forecast is for about 1 inch.  Will do an update if the totals increase.  11 degrees for tonight.  Next chance of SNOW is Sunday.

Trails on average are still FAIR.  In town trails are POOR frozen spots of  SNOW & ice in the mornings.  As it warms up during the day the SNOW & ice thaw & get mushy and wet especially at road crossings.  Many of the road trails for the most part have no snow on them.  Especially those running north & south.  Moving out of town conditions improve but it is a struggle to get to them without a bit of adventure sledding.  In woods trails particularly way out east, north & southwest are FAIR with even some areas of GOOD but this is getting far & few between. That would be 6 miles or more.  Trailering & dropping off to ride might be good.

No grooming at this point.

Here are some continuing areas to be aware of:

  • The section of the Chanticleer Inn Trail off of Trail 10E that takes riders to Eagle is showing signs mushy & wet at the entrance heading to the lake but is passable.  Trail Boss is monitoring that area and will close if conditions continue.
  • Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Minimal grooming due to the logging operation.
  • The Northland Pines School Forest logging project has expanded to Trail 17N.  It begins on the east side of Hwy 45N.  From town that would be heading north and when you reach the 17N/3N intersection on the west side of the highway & cross Hwy 45N it begins just as you get across the road onto the trail.  There are logs & equipment in that area.  Slow down to be safe.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open.  Please do not trespass on private land.

Well it is SNOWING this morning but need a bigger Snow Dance.  Come on need to hear you way of here!

See ya on the trails again real soon!
