Early Season Riding with FAIR conditions
January 7, 2019 8:21am – 30 degrees
4-5 1/2 inches of wet packy SNOW overnight. At 8:21am Snow Showers. It looks like misty to rain will move in between 10am-2pm. At 40-50% chance of that. After that Cloudy. Wednesday, Friday & Saturday best bets for SNOW.
No grooming overnight. Groomers out again tonight I would think. So if you are riding today be careful. Still ice under the wet SNOW.
Reminder that in Sno-Eagles Country there are 2 areas that have one-way trails. 10E is a one-way trail from the ERRA Sports Arena all the way out to Nicolet Mini Mart. So heading out east you are on the south side of the road. Heading back into town heading west you are on the north side of the road. The other is the 13’s up near Buckatabon Bridge & Bauer’s Dam area. Clearly marked with DO NOT ENTER signs. This can be dangerous.
EAGLE LAKE TRAIL & CATFISH LAKE TRAIL ARE MARKED & OPEN. Stay by the reflective orange barrels. Do not drift away from the barrels as it is not safe to do so. Remember not all lakes have trails so if you don’t see marker do not ride on it to be safe. These are the only 2 lakes that are marked in Sno-Eagles Country. No other lake trails.

Trail Conditions: Early Season
Snow Cover: 6-12 inches
Date of Report: January 4, 2019
Area Report:
We’ve have had a couple snowfalls recently and some colder temperatures which are helping our trails shape up nicely. However, trails are still in early season conditions! Some swamps and streams may still be open and there are some trails that haven’t been groomed yet. Approach all wet areas with extra caution and be prepared to turn around if the crossing appears suspicious. Riders should be extra cautious when travelling on the trails during this early season period. Be wary of low hanging branches, wet areas, downed trees and/or limbs, and other similar hazards that may compromise the trail. Use extra caution, be prepared to turn around or find an alternate route and stay on the trails! For the most up to date report of trail conditions, please contact the local snowmobile club.
Namakagon Trail Groomers: 3 to 5″ base. Early riding, not all marshes are frozen yet – some open water. Most trails have been rolled and groomed once so far with the exception of our bigger marshes and nothing has been done from Telemark to Cable as of yet. Groomers can be out at ALL times of the day or night!!! Especially be cautious for groomers during the day!
Bayfield County Snowmobile Alliance – Iron River Area: Iron River is shaping up nicely. Lots of bent over trees so grooming is slow but steady. By Friday afternoon should have 90% of trails with at least 1 pass
Barnes Barnestormers: Trails around Barnes and to the north are in good shape. Everything has been groomed with the exception of 31 to the south, there isn’t much snow on this and still work to do. Have to move trees the beavers cut down north of Mulligan Creek Road. The new re-route south of Mulligan Creek Rd. is ready, we are waiting for culverts to be replaced and more snow before trying to groom the rest.
Drummond SnoJacks: Trail 63N to Grand View was groomed on 1/1 and trails 6 & 7 will be groomed on 1/2 and have a 3″ to 5″ base. There will be no more grooming after today until we get more snow. Trail 63S is rerouted on to Lake Owen Station road for 3 miles. Trail 4 is closed east of Mason. Some wet areas still in the Bibon Swamp but still passable.
Frosty’s Vintage Riders: Delta area still ungroomed, conditions ok, low hanging branches on all trails.
Washburn Valhallers: Trail #13 north from Washburn to Valhalla was groomed Wednesday, January 2, for the second time with the Washburn LMC. The trail is in nice shape with only a few thin spots. Trail #13 south from Washburn to the tri county corridor was groomed Tuesday, January 1, for the first time. This trail is In decent shape but the fields are a bit thin and slightly rough. We will regroom Trail 13 South again Friday.
South shore Trail Club – Port Wing, Herbster & Cornucopia: Trails 1, 40, 41 all have had 1 pass and are decent, we need more snow by the lake but is passable. All downed trees are clear just working on hanging branches now.
WAINO Riders- Northwest corner of the County: Waino groomer tried to go but we had very low hangers over the trail. Club members did some cutting and Jeff will groom what he can on Friday. We hope the warm weather will allow all of trail 1 to get done by Saturday.

High of 27 degrees today. 18 over night & 24 for a low tonight. Really good new is SNOW is coming tonight into Monday. Could be 3-5 inches of wet stuff according to the weather guys. Then on Monday we are on the cusp of SNOW or rain all depending on the temps. So THINK COLD! Should be SNOW Monday night.
No grooming over night. Very impressed with the job the groomer guys are doing with the amount of snow! Great Job!

Area Report:
Many riders are reporting better conditions than they had expected. Early season conditions prevail, meaning, many holes & ruts have not been filled yet – so – actual conditions will vary from great to poor. Corners are icy.
We had temps in the low 40s yesterday (Friday 1/4/19). Temps will be about the same today. Exposed high traffic areas will suffer.
The forecast is calling for 3 to 5 on Sunday and then snow off and on for the next 3 days. Lets hope they are right.
As always – do not cross lakes that are not marked. Lake Minocqua is still not marked due to insufficient ice under the Hwy 51 Bridge.

January 5, 2019 7:30am – 24 degrees – Early morning sun – Cloudy afternoon
High of 37 degrees today which is much better than the 43 yesterday. Even better 18 degrees tonight! Really good new is SNOW is coming tomorrow, Sunday night! Right now it says periods of SNOW & a chance of some sleet. 3-5 inches. Then on Monday we are on the cusp of SNOW or rain all depending on the temps. So THINK COLD! Should be SNOW Monday night.
Yesterday morning went out for a 2 hour ride with my husband Tom & great grandson, Jase, who is 3. So riding slower as he fell a sleep 5 miles into the ride. From our house on 10E to town to 17N to 1N. Across Eagle Lake to 10E and home. Here’s what it was like:
10E to town on the northside of the road had snirt off & on especially 6 miles out. The section between Bloom & Loon Lake roads was solid & little icy at the beginning. Getting closer to Loon Lake road it was bumpy looks like vehicles were in there before snow time as it was rutted up. Thin snow there.
The grade (3) was white & smooth as could be. Plenty of snow to the intersection by Dairy Queen. Plenty of snow all the way through town. Thinner than the grade. Snirt at crossings. Headed out on the grade to 17N intersection.
Took 17N to trail 1. 17 was mushy but snow covered til we crossed the road from the south side to the north side. Under the big pines it was very snirty. In the swampy part more snow but bumps from the frozen slush. Crosses Hwy 45N. Not too bad on the south of the road into the woods. Rode that until Trail 1 intersection.
Trail 1 down Deer View Lane to Townhall Rd into the woods. The woods part of the trail had logging on it & is pretty bumpy but mostly snow covered. Onto Eagle Lake trail that was smoooooth & safe by the orange barrels. Up onto land & Dollar Lake Rd to Trail 10E.
Head east on the south side of the road & it was pretty much snow covered. Few snirty spots.
Very impressed with the job the groomer guys are doing with the amount of snow! Great Job! We were out from 10:30-12:30pm . It deteriorated in the afternoon with the 43 degree temps. All in all great ride with our sleepy 3 years old!

Area Report:
Trails are still in early season condition. overall our trails are Fair: trail 8 and 2 are fair. There is one small section (6 feet long) just north of the intersection of trail 6 and 2 (on trail #6) that has thin ice and some open water. We packed it with straw New Years day. It is passable but be aware that it is there.
GROOMER JUST SPENT 5 HOURS WITH THE RANGER AND MINI-DRAG AND GROOMED TRAIL #6 4 TIMES. the bumps were horrible, he was able to knock them down a bit. still far from perfect, but hopefully a bit better for all of you. Hopefully the next couple days are our January thaw, we would all like to get back to winter! Please help support all Snowmobile clubs: Buy our raffle tickets, attend our fundraisers and thank the groomers. Stay on marked trails and enjoy our system responsibly.
A BIG SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE WORKED TIRELESSLY TO GET OUR TRAILS READY.

A big thank you to the Manitowish Waters Chamber for mailing maps out for us and their help in reporting trail conditions. Also a huge thank you to the groomer operators who volunteer their time to make our trails the best they can be!
Snowmobile Information:
The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.
The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. With Minocqua/Woodruff to our south, St. Germain/Eagle River to our southeast, Lake Gogebic to our north, Presque Isle/Winchester to our northeast, Mercer and Hurley to our northwest and Lac du Flambeau/Price County to our west, our area residents and guests can choose from a variety of daily or overnight destinations for scenic riding with excellent pit stops along the way.
The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters maintain an active grooming schedule for the area’s trail system. Coordinated efforts with the surrounding communities provide continuous smoothly-groomed trails in this northwest sector. The Sno-Skeeters own and operate some of the newest grooming equipment on the market today. Support the club by attending their special events or contributing to the “trail pigs” at local establishments along the trails. Or show your support by becoming a member!
Enjoy, and please ride responsibly and safely!
