VILAS COUNTY TRAILS TO INCLUDE SNO-EAGLES TRAILS ARE OPEN!
Still Early Season Riding Trails Good to Fair

January 19 2019 7:05am – 8 below – High of 10

Day 3 of the cold.  This will continues through Monday when the temps will go to teens during the day & 9 degree above overnight.   If you are going out riding be sure to dress warm in layers.  Ride with another rider & stop a few more times to warm up.

Groomers have been doin’ a great job with the trails in Sno-Eagles Country.  Heading out every night to groom pan the trails.  Driving home in my car from the Derby Track last night at about 11;30pm one of the groomers was heading back into town on Trail 10E.  When you meet the drivers give them a thumbs up!

No SNOW yesterday.  Lake Effect or the real variety. Start DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE to bring that SNOW down from over Lake Superior.

Pretty much the same trail report as yesterday.  With the cold not much change.  Best riding is heading east, northeast, north, far northwest, south & southeast.  All are SNOW covered. From Eagle River 10E is very snirty & rough from Loon Lake Rd through the woods to Bloom Rd.  It improves in the 1 way section at the Sports Arena all the way out to Phelps & Three Lakes trail connects.  That is both ways. Out & back.

Heading south 3/13S aka “the grade” is good until the sections where you come out onto Bloom Rd. Icy, snirty & rough areas.  No word or report on the trails into Three Lakes.

Heading north with all the traffic 3/13N aka “the grade” is SNOW covered but the section after you cross Adams Rd is rough.  Needs more SNOW to fix that.  West on 10/13 aka Wisconsin River Bridge there are good & rough areas.  Icy at the bridge. 17N has is a mixed bags of riding.  Same with 1 that heads to Eagle Lake from the north.

The trails heading west are thin.  That starts at the Town of Lincoln Town Hall to close to the Eagle River Inn.  When you cross over to the north side of the road to cross the Rec Bridge.  Improves there.  Heading south on 7/17S it’s pretty good to the turn onto 7 aka the Paint Ball Field. In the woods on 7S good. Heading south on 17S was very mushy.  Cold last night should have changed that.  Heading west on 70 thin until after you cross Hwy 70W near Zeman Rd.  Snow covered on the south side of the road.  Thins out when you cross over to the north side of the road.  The high hill on the north side across from the Wisconsin river is icy & snirty.

Going to see snirt at the road crossings. Plenty of sanding was done on the roads. Same for many road trails.  It is icy underneath everywhere so slow down.

Sno-Eagles Country has 2 areas that have one-way trails.  10E is a one-way trail from the ERRA Sports Arena all the way out to Nicolet Mini Mart.  The other is the 13’s up near Buckatabon Bridge & Bauer’s Dam area.  Clearly marked with DO NOT ENTER signs.  Plus trail signs are backwards if you are going the wrong way.

EAGLE LAKE TRAIL & CATFISH LAKE TRAIL ARE MARKED & OPEN. Stay by the reflective orange barrels.  Do not drift away from the barrels as it is not safe to do so.  Remember not all lakes have trails so if you don’t see marker do not ride on it to be safe.  These are the only 2 lakes that are marked in Sno-Eagles Country.  No other lake trails.

Also there is a dusk to dawn speed limit of 55 MPH.

Continue DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE & THINK COLD!

See ya on the trails!

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 27″ – 36″

Date of Report: January 18, 2019

Area Report:

Happy New Year to everyone!!  It’s a bright, beautiful, crisp day here in Houghton/Hancock/Keweenaw.   The trails are being groomed around the clock, so please be on the look out and stay out of their way.  There are tons of riders in town, this weekend will be packed!  Trails are in good shape.  Trail 3 between Dollar Bay and Lake Linden is closed for the season.  You can still ride into Dollar Bay and go to Quincy’s, you just either have to go back towards Hancock or head from Dollar Bay to Dreamland.  You can go into Lake Linden from Calumet.  Trail 120 and 121, the Freda Loop, is closed for the season also. Trail 133 between Gay and Lac LaBelle is temporarily closed because of logging.  I may be open later in the season, depending on conditions.

Remember to stay off all ice. No ice is safe ice.  The weather has been so wacky here, warm then cold, wet then snow.  Its made the ice on the canal very unstable.

Stay safe out there on the trails, respect others on the trail, respect private property, slow down–speed is never good, and save the drinking for after the riding!!

Prentice Bush Benders Trail Report 01/17/2019

The trails are in fair condition in the wooded areas and poor condition with minimal snow coverage in the open areas and around the village of Prentice. They are still in early season riding condition with some rough spots. We are currently grooming/panning the trails once per week until we get more snow and can start normal grooming operations. The trails to the South and East of Prentice have the most snow cover and all creeks and swamps remain frozen at this time. There is logging on trail 181 East of Prentice and on trail 116 around County Road K. With the base we have down trail conditions will improve quickly if we get more snow. Ride safe and have fun.

The Sno Drovers 1/15/19

The Sno Drovers’ trails in the Pike Lake area continue to be in fair to good condition.   While the weekend traffic was hard on the thin snow cover, but they are grooming up well.  There are rocks in areas that have made their way to the top of the snow, especially on 101 west from the lakes by the iron bridge and on 111 just north of Fish Trap Road.  There are occasional bare spots, but not too many nor too bad.  If we get just a few inches of snow, the trails should be great since they are nice and flat now.

Logging continues on Trail 120 south of the big swamp and Fould’s Creek Rd and on Trail 108 between Trail 101 and highway 70.  Take these slowly and expect icy conditions and logging equipment.

Area Report:

Trail report for January 18, 2019 – Trails good to fair. Our groomers were out last night and early this morning grooming our complete trail system. With the lack of new fresh snow there is not a lot of snow to work with on the trails. The only good thing is the very cold temp we are having. The cold temps are stiffening up our trails and staying flatter longer. We expect heavy traffic over the weekend and no snow in the forecast expected. With the lack of snow on the trails the corners and other areas can be bare and icy. Please use extreme caution. We are having a snowmobile club breakfast/meat paddle raffle this Sunday at Gooch’s. Please come and join us for some good eats and fun! Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.
