Reporter:AJ’s Walleye Lodge

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 24″ in the week – more on the way!

Date of Report: February 4, 2019

Area Report:

Another busy snowmobile weekend in the Lake Gogebic Area.   Temps warmed up from our deep freeze over the weekend, but have considerably dropped which is where they are forcasted to stay.    Thankfully, we did not receive all the predicted rain and what we did get only helped to firm up our existing base which will just work to extend our season in the long run..

Right now we are seeing white fluffy powder of which there is 3-5” predicted for today.  Forecast looks great – temps no higher than mid-teens and snow almost every single day.    John Dee’s forecast calls for 8-12” between Feb 9th and Feb 13th and we’ve received over 24” in the last week.    Groomers were out last night and all trails are reported to be in GOOD to EXCELLENT condition.

UPDATED FORCASTS:

  • John Dee Snow Central Forecast:  click here

TRAIL CONDITIONS:

Overall trail conditions are GOOD to EXCELLENT:

  • Trail 1 North:               Excellent
  • Trail 1 South:               Remember there is a re-route from the North corner of the lake to West

Shore Resort.   You will have to ride the lake and pick up trail 1 S at that

point.    Conditions are great from there to Marenisco.

  • Trail 1/8 Corridor: Excellent
  • Trail 8 West Good to Excellent
  • Trail 8 East: Good – thin toward Ewen
  • Trail 13 N & S: Good to Excellent
  • Trail 102: Excellent
  • Trail 100: Closed to Logging this season.

Please be sure to stay on the trails,  respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely.  The signs on the trails are there for rider’s safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.

Trail report for February 4, 2019 – Trails are good but icy. Over the weekend we had very heavy traffic. The groomers were out during the weekend and laying out a nice trail. With the warmer temps and the heavy traffic, the trails degrade very quickly. This morning we have freezing rain. There are ice storm warnings until this afternoon. The corners and other areas are very icy. Use cation. The temps are expected to get colder tonight thru tomorrow morning. We expect to send out our groomers tonight. There is some snow in the forecast for this week and hopefully we will get enough to refresh the trails. Be aware that groomers can be out at any time of the day or night. Please use extreme cation. Follow all directions from the groomer. Give them a thumbs up when you see them. They are out there to make your ride more enjoyable Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Snowmobile Trail Reports:

Red Arrow Snowmobile Trails (Townsend) – It’s 27 degrees in beautiful downtown Townsend this morning with fog.  The groomers were out last night and trails are fantastic, smooth, hard and fast. Best trails in a very long time. Right now the trails east of Hwy 32 are in very good condition. The Nicolet State Trail (The Grade) I would say that it is in very good condition. The trails west of town toward Hwy 64& T are in very good condition on the level trails. In the hills they are in very good condition as well. I hope the warmth the next couple of days doesn’t do any damage to our wonderful trails!

Paul Bunyan (Lakewood) – The temperature at 5 am is 24 and fog. The groomers were back in at 3 am. There was a heavy mist and fog. There was a lot of traffic in the area over the last 2 days. The trails held up very good with the solid ice base we have. Starting Tuesday temperatures will be back to normal so hopefully a few warm days doesn’t do too much damage. Ride safe and watch for the icy corners.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Trails (Mountain) – Chute Pond trails are open, freshly groomed, and in good to very good condition. Grooming will continue, so please watch for them on the trail anytime of day or night- and always yield the right of way to the groomers. Stay to the right, and enjoy your ride!

Bagley and Brazeau Joyriders Snowmobile Trails – B &B Joyriders trails received 5 to 6” of new snow this week; the groomers have been out all day Tuesday and will be back out Friday. The trails are in good to very good condition but remember the winds will be moving the snow around mainly in the open fields, so watch for drifting snow. If you ride to Suring, the old trail is closed through the golf course, but the trail does go around it and back into town.

Gillett – Gillett trails are all open and in good condition.

Oconto Falls Sno-Jokers – Oconto Falls Snowmobile Trails are closed starting Monday, February 4th.

Lena Snowdrifters- Lena Snowdrifters trail system is open! Panning of trails will continue, expect early season conditions. Please stay on marked trails! Leaving the trail is tresspassing and can be dangerous as ruts, rocks and other hazards could be hidden. Ride safe, sober and enjoy!

Chase Sno Chasers Trails – Closed starting Sunday, February 3rd at 6:00am.

SNO-EAGLES TRAILS OPEN!
Trails Fair to Poor

February 4 2019 8:120am – 30 – High 32

Some interesting weather in Eagle River this morning.  Yesterday the rain/mist in the forecast did not happen.  Earlier this morning it was SNOWING.  Now is it sleeting in some areas.   Right now east of Eagle River SNOWING lightly.  But it is icy out there. Looks like the precip. will continue to mid to late morning.

Groomer drivers were out last night working hard.  When you see them give them a thumbs up.  The heavy traffic makes their job challenging.  They are out so we can ride.

Went out riding yesterday leaving about 10am & getting back about 3:30pm.  The conditions are all over the place.  FAIR. GOOD. ICY.  THICK BASE.  THINNER BASE. SOFT MUSHY SNOW.  FIRM DRIER SNOW.  CRYSTALLIZED FATIGUED SNOW.  SNIRT & SOME CHOP.  Been asked for detailed report. Here is what I saw in Sno-Eagles Country:

10E about 6 miles out the northside of the one way heading to town was mostly GOOD with some FAIR.  Snirt at many crossings.  Section from Bloom Rd to Loon Lake Rd was very icy with some blow outs.  In the woods sections there was a little chop & plenty of snirt as you entered onto Loon Lk Rd.

3/13Alt/10 aka “the grade” was covered with plenty of white SNOW & GOOD for the most part coming from the south.  A bit of chop. The Hwy 45 crossing was heavy snirty til crossing.  Then the snirt that drags into the trail from the road sand.  SNOW in town was mushy soft but covered.  On average FAIR.  Crossings POOR.  All the way out to Hwy G crossing was the same. SNOW covered.  Turned around there & came back toward town.

Headed west on 70W/7 behind the Dairy Queen.  The section behind Super 8 was thin & choppy.  Section near the Lincoln Town Hall was very snirty at both crossings.  After crossing the section until the model home was thin, icy, grainy & had some small chop.  From the model home all the way past Eagle River Inn & crossing the Rec bridge all the way to the 2nd bridge was FAIR.  The sun took down the SNOW level but covered.  Continuing west the trail was well ridden.  All kinds of conditions.  Grainy. Snirt at crossings. Icy.  Blown out corners.  This all the way to the turn around where Club meets St. Germain. This area is a tough one as it tends to be thin.  Groomers can’t make SNOW.  Just groom it.

From there we rode St. Germain & Sugar Camp trails.  All sorts of conditions.

Returned to Eagle River from Sugar Camp trail 15 connecting to trail 7 aka Paint Ball Field.  That trail was GOOD all the way except just after crossing Hwy H.  Intersect with trail 17S heading north toward Eagle River.  Icy & some heavier deeper chop.  But again SNOW cover.

Took 70 back into town & the grade home.  10E on the south side was SNOW covered.  FAIR to Poor.  Only about 62 miles. In the woods the trails are the best with plenty of SNOW.  More traffic than I expected.

Worth repeating is that:

Sno-Eagles Country has 2 areas that have one-way trails.  10E is a one-way trail from the ERRA Sports Arena all the way out to Nicolet Mini Mart.  The other is the 13’s up near Buckatabon Bridge & Bauer’s Dam area.  Clearly marked with DO NOT ENTER signs.  Plus trail signs are backwards if you are going the wrong way.

EAGLE LAKE TRAIL & CATFISH LAKE TRAIL ARE MARKED & OPEN. Stay by the reflective orange barrels.

THINK SNOW!!!

See ya on the trails!

SNO-EAGLES TRAILS OPEN!
Trails Good to Fair

February 3 2019 8:45am – 30 – High 36

Heavy traffic, sunshine & temps in 30’s yesterday.  Trails were pretty well used.  Saw groomers out early 5:30pm ish heading north.  All trails except 1N & 17S toward Sugar Camp groomed.

On average still GOOD but could use more SNOW so there are FAIR conditions too.  Trails east & north of town have more SNOW than west & south of town. Here is a breakdown of trails:

  • 10E early morning was pretty GOOD as it had been groomed the night before but FAIR by early evening. Section from Bloom Rd to Loon Lake Rd heading west in the woods is snirty/rough.
  • 3/Alt13 was GOOD in the morning choppy later in the day.
  • 70/7 heading west out of town was choppy from the Town of Lincoln Hall to where the trail comes out by the model home.  Better from there all the way out.  Later in the day from the heavy traffic was FAIR.
  • 10/13/3 through town is SNOW covered but very snirty at the crossings. Stayed SNOW covered.
  • 10/13 heading north was FAIR to GOOD.
All in all lots of traffic.

More riding today.  Let you know in the morning.

Weather guys are forecasting Wintry Mix tomorrow so THINK COLD to get the temps down & START DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE.  Next SNOW is forecast Tuesday night with 1-3 forecast.  Then maybe another inch on Wednesday.
