SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/10

12/10 update-
The trail was groomed on December 9th in the Raco, Brimley, and Bay Mills area on Trail #8 west of Brimley, Trail #480 to the Spile Dam turnaround, the Raco powerline, and Trail #889. No other routes have been groomed the last few days due to warm temps and low traffic.

Trails are likely still somewhat hard packed from the thaw/freeze pattern as we hover around freezing and have had some very light mist and mixed precipitation the last 2 days.

Ride safe and let us know if you have questions that we can help with.

Thanks! Think snow and cold! ❄🥶

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 23″ on the ground

Date of Report: December 9, 2024

Area Report:

Well it’s 8 days into a new season and things are shaping up pretty good in the western UP. We received just 60 inches here in Toivola so far and more in the forcast. The main trails are in good early season conditions. However some of the secondary trails are not so good. There’s lots of wet spot that need some COLD temps to freeze over so ride with caution.

Trail Conditions: Closed

Date of Report: December 9, 2024

Snowmobile Information:

It is 33 degrees at 8:00 A.M. We had high temps in the upper 30’s the last few days, and some heavy, wet snow yesterday. Sounds like the roads were pretty bad around Vilas last night. Tonight it is supposed to get down to 20 degrees, then get progressively colder the next few days, single digits and below zero. Hopefully we build a nice hard base before we get any substantial snow. Hornshoe groomer was able to pan once so far, and our trails are inspected and approved. I have seen reports of good riding in Michigan, just do your homework. Keith said he had some calls asking about my report of the changes to the club trails that go to Fence, and Crawling Stone. So people read my reports, I have fans? A heartfelt thank you to all seven or eight of you. Mark

Date of Report: December 6, 2024

Area Report:

The Vilas County trail system remains closed.  Work is being done to prepare the trails for a great season of snowmobiling.  Swamps are not frozen yet and lake remain unsafe or in some cases still have open water.  Once the clubs have their maintenance done and inspections have been completed, then the trails will be ready for opening.  Please be patient while the process takes place.  We want them open as much as you do.  The current snow is mostly dry lake effect snow that does not pack very well.  Keep checking back for more updates.
