Area Report:

Nothing new to report, road routes are mostly bare. Trails in the woods still have a nice ice base to them. We haven’t groomed in over a week. With the trails closing for the season on Friday, March 31st, I don’t see us going out anymore.

Thanks for a great season, see you next year.

Snowmobile Information:

Groom to Ride drawing at 1pm on Saturday, April 1st at the Derby Complex. There will also be basket raffles that day, so stop by and enjoy some food and fun to close out the 2023 season.

Area Report:

Well folks, it’s over. We had a good long season, but all things must come to an end. Oneida County Trails close today.

We were blessed with snow through March which is rare in the last few years. Hodag Sno-Trails hopes everyone had a chance to get out and experience the snow fun. We appreciate our landowners that allow us to utilize approximately 150 miles of trails in the Rhinelander area. If it wasn’t for them, we would be riding the ditches.

Thank you to the groomers that were out nightly to maintain the trail system. Thank you to the club members that are out there volunteering their time to brush, mark, inspect and keep the trail system going.

We will be having our year-end meeting to summarize the year and look for ideas for continual improvement.

Woods riding is still Good with some areas of burn out Icy spots in the morning are soft by mid day. Trails that run on north sides of as east/west roads are thin to bare. 10E, 17N along Hwy 45N.. 10E that heads east is Good to high hill at connect with Three Lakes trails. Late season adventure sledding.

No Grooming last night

Please ride on the right side, slow down, limit alcohol & no off trail riding.
Businesses on the 2 marked lakes, Catfish & Eagle have removed the barrels.

It was 6 degrees this morning near Hurley WI and Groomer Cody is out shaving the grooves. So far the marsh areas are holding together well with these cold nights, and we just keep adding to their tops to replace what’s melting underneath. This is the beauty of having plenty of snow to work with, and we thank all of you donating to help with our ongoing costs this season.

Washburn County snowmobile trails are still open at this time. Area Clubs & County Staff are reporting fair conditions after the warm weather and rain this week. With continued warm temperatures, the trail base will continue to get softer. Grooming efforts will continue to the best of their abilities. Please note that a section of Trail 25, from County Highway D heading north to Nice Lake Road is closed for the remainder of the season.

Snowmobile Information:

it’s 18° right now at 8:30 AM, high of 43 today. Hornshoe one groomed all the trails last night and this morning. The sun whacks trail 17 from Mattke Rd to north of F in the same spots. In the woods we are in decent condition north of there. Caution is advised in all of the tight corners through the Raven lake area, as the operators are doing their best to pull down the banks where they can, even though it’s getting less. Trail five into the casino is good. 17 N. from five can get soft, and get a little bumpy, then freeze. Drifting put a lot of snow up in the Powell marsh, but be careful around the bridge. Overall it should be pretty good, just be careful in that there is ice under a lot of the snow, and the consistency of the snow itself changes. That can make the corners a little dicey if you don’t use caution as it warms up and freezes. Been seeing a lot of amazing riders the last couple of weeks, people using common sense and their experience shows. I will be working at the AWSC conference in Green Bay, helping to raise funds for my other snowmobile club the Midnite Trail Riders. Please go out to the Northern Hornshoe website, and take a look at the Kubota we purchased. That machine will be used for the smaller trails that are in the area of the Dam bar, down around Highway 70. A lot of landowners, and riders,have complained that those trails do not get groomed. Most of the complaints come from people that don’t belong to clubs, or understand what it takes to keep trails going. Forest riders stopped grooming there, because of the logistics, and Keith has been trying to do it with our John Deere, but the distance is too great and the trails are extremely narrow. The new machine will allow us to expand our grooming, take care of downed trees when there’s too much snow for our pick up truck, and give us something to haul equipment when we mark lakes and do repairs. Please consider donating, and we will also be doing several fundraisers to help pay for this. The clubs you see grooming right now, are not getting paid, they are burning up five dollar a gallon diesel fuel, and that comes right out of our savings. It’s been a great season, and our Vilas County teams have kept the area beautiful. I see a lot of people asking how trails are, on the Wisconsin trail website. Join a club, or at least like and follow the Vilas County clubs on Facebook. I see a lot of the reporters have run out of reporting gas, and this will probably be my last report for the season, thank you for all of the positive feedback and support. Mark

March temps continue. High 30’s & Low 40’s during the day. Teens & low 20’s at night. This is keeping SNOW on the ground. The high temps are now burning through trails in wide open areas & especially on the northside trails that run along roads. Next SNOW is a front coming in Tuesday the 28th through Friday the 31st. So upnorth we ride concentrating on woods riding trails which are GOOD yet.

Here is a yesterday ride report on our last ride. Trails out east on Trail 10 are still ample snow covered from Taylor Lk Rd/ERRA Hockey Arena heading east on the south side of Hwy 70E. Exception the highway bridge crossing and a section east of the bridge were you merge back onto the trail. After that snow covered except the road crossings all the way out. A South Military rd & highway crossing it’s bare. Once across. Trail along N. Military is snow covered. South Anvil Lk Rd ice & snow covered all the way to Bald Eagle Lane. Which is half bare. Back in the woods & snow covered all the way the Forestry road that takes you the woods trail. Left onto a snow covered trail up the hill about 1/2 way. Burn through at top and some of the high hill. Northside lots of sun. Snow again that gets thin at the connect with Three Lakes trail. Three Lakes trails are snow covered & get better & better farther out you go. If ya have a need to ride go east.

Heading north it’s a bit of a struggle but in the woods there’s snow. WI River bridge section & 3N aka Manske good with snow & ice. No report on 10W.

Remember as you ride & meet a groomer the equipment is NOT able to leave the trail due to it’s weight. Pull over & stop. Wait for direction from the driver. Give ’em a thumbs up. They groom so we can ride!

Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – March 23, 2023

Area Report:

The Phelps trails are in good condition. Road routes are bare and should be avoided. There is great snow cover in the woods with sparse snow at road crossings and trails in the open areas. This will be the last weekend to ride so hurry on up and catch the last ride of the winter. The Snowmobile club will not be back out grooming for the rest of the season unless we get a big dumping of snow soon. The forecast doesn’t look like that will happen. Please if you are out riding, “Ride Right”. The last date that trails can be open is March 31st, so plan accordingly.

Please plan on joining us for the Phelps Snowmobile Clubs Summer Ride. It is scheduled for June 24th at the Lakefront Pines Park in downtown Phelps.
