Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – January 3, 2020

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 10-18 inches packed

Date of Report: January 3, 2020

Area Report:

The majority of trails in Bayfield County are in great condition! The late December rain and warmer temps are still affecting some sections of trail and riders should exercise caution when riding wet sections of trail.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: – We received around 4″ of fresh snow. Trails have a 10-12″ base. All trails were groomed on Tues & Wed (Dec. 31st and Jan 1st) with the exception of the marshes again. We have some standing water but sleds are getting through.

Barnes Barnestormers: We will have all our trails groomed by noon Friday with the exception of 31 south of Mulligan Creek Road. (We won’t go down there till there is more cold weather as there are some water holes on that section of trail) Our trails have a good base and are grooming out nicely, with no problem areas to speak of.

Gordon (Southwest corner of the county): Trail 17 south of Lower Eau Claire Lake to Highway 27 is closed due to open water. The rain and warm weather have not done us any good.

Drummond SnoJacks: All trails have been groomed with the exception of Trail 4 from Mason to Sanborn. That trail will be groomed tonight (1/2/2019) once the accumulated ice has thawed off of the drag. Trail 63 through the Bibon Swamp is passable but not groomed. The groomer driver reports no impassable areas but all trails have wet spots so use caution. The Trail 63 south detour is still in effect until conditions improve on Lake Owen.

Frosty’s Vintage Riders: Groomer made it down Trail 4 as far as Frostys, good conditions. Frostys to mason ridable but water in many areas, ride with extreme caution. Trails 22,24 and 31 were groomed Monday and 17 miles of corridor groomed Tuesday, all reported to be in excellent condition. Trails 31, 3, and 66 to Port Wing is planned for grooming Friday.

Washburn Valhallers: We attempted to groom to Ashland yesterday (Jan 2nd) but were sinking in some areas more than we could groom.  Trail to Ashland is still rideable other than a 1-block section which is about 2-feet deep with water.  There is a ditch go around for now.  We will let things firm up and try to get out from Washburn to Valhalla area starting Monday. Out of Valhalla Trail 51 was groomed from Pub n Grub to Mountain road and is in excellent condition. Trails 63, 33 and 31 from the Corridor to Pub n Grub are also very good with 1 wet spot around Birch Grove Campground. Trails 19 and 41 to the Casino will be groomed on January 2nd.

South Shore (Port Wing, Herbster, Cornucopia): Groomed Trail 1 from Herbster to 51 and into Corny. still many wet spots but very good condition. Trail 41 and a section of 40 to Lenawee Rd is done also and very good. Still need brushing help on all sections though

WAINO (northwest corner of the county): Trail 1 from Jacks Hungry Trout Inn to State Hwy 13 was groomed yesterday January 1st. The trail is passable but use caution there are high water areas. After the high water areas have time to freeze the trail will be in good shape. Groomed Trail 1 from Douglas county to highway 13 on Jan. 1st and is in good shape with a few wet areas that I’m sure have since froze. The Trask creek crossing was temporarily routed around the culvert and on to the road because of open water but that should be good to cross for the weekend.

Trail Report – : Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – January 3, 2020

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 16-22 inches

Date of Report: January 3, 2020

Area Report:

Trail report for January 3, 2020 – Trails are good. Going into the New Year we have had a lot of sleds going over our trails. We have been grooming and will be out grooming for the entire weekend. Our weather remains cool and maybe some snow on Sunday but not a lot of snow expected. The snow on the trails is very clean and white but without the subzero temps the trails are not setting up and are staying soft. With heavy traffic the trails can get bumpy very quickly. We need some subzero temps to really make the trails hard. We will be out doing what we can to make a better ride for you.  Please use extreme caution in all areas! Stay on marked trails! Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Western U P Snowmobile Trail Report— 1/3/2020

 Gogebic Range Trail Authority

 Trail Condition:Good

  • Last Groomed:January 02nd, 2020
  • Base Snowfall:32″
  • Reported On:January 02nd, 2020 @ 1:01pm

Overall Story:

Thursday 1/2 12:00 pm CST:   We continue to groom a fantastic trail base with a lot of snow.  There are water hazards across the system, we regretfully are back to “early season conditions.”  That means trails will change dramatically & quickly.  And that means riders need to ride easy and defensively!  For the large spots we have made reroutes until the temps drop and trails firm completely back up.  Smaller ones are easily navigated.  All local clubs are working overtime to try and deal with the hazards as fast as possible, but please be patient.  We’ve seen 100″+ of snow, 10 days of 30’s and 40’s with rain.  We had immense snow depth which is why conditions remain so good, but also why the hazards are so tough to seal back up.  Lake Gogebic Area is having more water issues causing them to spend more time fixing holes than grooming trails.  Please be patient with our clubs!    GOOD NEWS:  TRAIL 11S HAS BEEN APPROVED TO REOPEN!  We will send the groomer down it ASAP to get the freezing started!

WARNINGS AND NOTICES:   We are begging riders to ride off trail legally as there are 1-million acres of public land east of Wakefield to off trail ride on – please only ride legal areas!

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:

Overall rating:  GOOD

Last groomed 1/1/2020.    Please do not ride on side walks near Holiday and try to keep noise down in town.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:

Overall rating:  GOOD

Last groomed 1/2/2020.  The entire stretch is in excellent condition!  Featuring a brand new section to enjoy this season, the club eliminated Prospect road route and moved the trail completely into the woods eliminating 1.5 miles of road route.  PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL AND RESPECT THESE LANDOWNERS!

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:

Overall Rating: GOOD

Last groomed 1/1/2020.  There is logging 4 miles east of Wakefield.  Please yield to logging traffic, they are working and you are playing!

Trail 8 from Wakefield to Tula Crossing:

Overall Rating:  CLOSED!

We hope to open it by the weekend.  Gogebic Area Grooming

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):

Overall Rating:  OPEN – FAIR to GOOD

Open but with hazards and reroutes.  STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!!!!   This is our most scenic trail and is a treat to ride!  There are several scenic vistas on the trail such as Bald Mountain “NORTH” lookout viewing Madeline Island/ mouth of the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior,  the Bald Mountain “SOUTH” lookout viewing Gogebic Range (Powderhorn, Copper Peak), the Montreal River Gorge look out and finally the amazing Superior Falls Waterfall Complex.  Stay on the trail in the farm fields.  Over 25 landowners are involved to make this trail a reality, please respect them and ride responsibly.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):

Overall Rating:  OPENING SOON!

11N (Wakefield, MI to South boundary Rd/White Pine):  Closed indefinitely.  Seeking local community support with ideas on how to reopen it.  200 yards of private property closed this 25 mile trail.

Gogebic Area Groomers 1/1/2020

Received over a foot of snow yesterday which would have been much more welcomed had it not been for the warmer temps that created open water areas. It’s still snowing with temps in the high teens which could drop to single digits later today. Let’s hope. Snow is in the forecast daily with a significant (12-24”) forecasted for Jan 4-9.
Currently:

  • Trail 1 N has some wet spots.
    • Trail 8 between Bergland and Wakefield is CLOSED due to water on the trail. Advised not to ride this trail at all until it freezes. If heading west, take the West shore to Marenisco.
    • Trail 13 North: groomed last night.
    • Trail 8W groomed last night.

Most of all the trails have some type of water issues. Groomers are out now in Marenisco seeing what needs to be fixed. Use extreme caution while our guys assess and fix. Snow cover is making is more difficult to see water areas. Everyone is doing all they can – please do your part and be smart when out riding.

U.P.Thunder Riders of Watersmeet 1/2/2020

Grooming daily and the trails are in very good condition, but we do have some water areas West of Watersmeet on Trail #2. Please ride with caution on this 30 mile stretch of trail.  We are doing the best we can with these water areas, they are difficult to deal with.

Trail #3 from the Wisconsin border to Watersmeet very good condition, Watersmeet to Paulding good condition with 1 wet area that is passable, 2 logging project on this trail one north of Forest Rd 5250 (trail 150) and the other is north of Bond Falls Rd so please use caution and respect the loggers

Trail #2 west of Watersmeet, good  condition but several wet areas, the worst wet area is in the Tunnel it is full of water about 8-12 inches it has a concrete bottom so you won’t get stuck .

Trail #2 east of Watersmeet to Trail #107, good condition

Trail #13 south to Cisco Chain, good condition

Trail Report – : Lake Gogebic | Bergland, Michigan – January 2, 2020

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Jan 2 Trail Report

Date of Report: January 2, 2020

Area Report:

Trail # 1:   Bergland to White Pine.  This trail is being groomed nightly and is reported to be in fair to good condition. A few wet spots on the trail still exist and is advised to use caution when traveling.

Trail # 1:  South towards Marenisco from Trail # 8 (Ethelwood Grade).  This trail was packed in with just the groomer and a drag will be going down it tomorrow 1-3-20. However, where the trail comes out onto the “closed” trail 8. A huge water whole is making it impossible for trail sleds to pass through to get towards Hoop N Hollar. We will be working on these holes very soon to get it to freeze. From Logging site to Marenisco on trail # 1 use caution as the water spots are still open.

Trail # 1 South from Marenisco to Wisconsin Border:  This trail is being groomed daily and is reported to be in good condition.

Trail # 8 East from Bergland to Ewen.  This trail is being groomed daily and is reported in good condition.

Trail # 8:  from Bergland to Wakefield.  Currently closed, trail has a few wet spots that are making impassable for trail sleds. We will be working on this as soon as we can. Our neighboring club to the west Gogebic Range Trail Authority even offered to help make this safe and passable. We will both keep you posted on progress with Trail 8 west.

Trail 102 from Bergland to Trail #11,  Has been packed down with just the groomer to fill in the wet spots. We will be out daily on this trail to get it back into shape.

From Trail # 1 that goes to White Pine to the intersection of Trail #102 is very wet and in bad condition. Use extreme caution when ride that section of trail. We are attempted to freeze those bad spots in but can’t keep up with the flow of water.

Trail # 13 North from Bergland to 101:  This trail is being groomed daily and is reported to be in good condition. Only one semi wet spot but is being filled nightly.

Trail # 13 south from Bergland to Root Cellar. This section of trail is 90% ridding on East Shore Road.

Groomers have been out fixing/repairing areas with open water.    There are still some wet areas – please use caution.   Share this information with others and please report back any challenges you may encounter.

Trail Report – : Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin – January 2, 2020

Reporter:Phil

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Looks like winter

Date of Report: January 2, 2020

Area Report:

Just returned from a ride of the Frosty Club trail system. Cut a few trees and the swamp 1 miles west of Land O Lakes is opening up so use extreme caution–especially at night. Hope it freezes over again soon or we may have to build a bridge. Most of the rest of the rest of the trails were in good to very good shape. The snow on the trees is truly beautiful. Lakes are getting better but not safe yet unless marked with barrels or signs.

News and Reports:

Frosty Club monthly meeting is Monday at 6pm at the Town Hall. Please join us as we will be discussing a new groomer and the many upcoming fundraisers that we need volunteers for.
