WARNINGS AND NOTICES:   We are begging riders to ride off trail legally as there are 1-million acres of public land east of Wakefield to off trail ride on – please only ride legal

Gogebic Area Grooming  12/26/19

Thursday, January 4, 2020

The New Year is off to a good start with cold temps and daily snow in the forecast starting on Sunday.  John Dee is forecasting that we could get from 12-24” Jan 6-11 and he’s usually on the money – so let’s keep our bets with him.     Groomers have been out on the trails and have done a great job getting trails back in shape after last week.   Trail 8 West is closed till further notice.

Currently:

  • Trail # 1:   Bergland to White Pine.  This trail is being groomed nightly and is reported to be in fair to good condition. A few wet spots on the trail still exist and is advised to use caution when traveling.

Trail # 1:  South towards Marenisco from Trail # 8 (Ethelwood Grade).  This trail was packed in with just the groomer and a drag will be going down it tomorrow 1-3-20. However, where the trail comes out onto the “closed” trail 8. A huge water whole is making it impossible for trail sleds to pass through to get towards Hoop N Hollar. We will be working on these holes very soon to get it to freeze. From Logging site to Marenisco on trail # 1 use caution as the water spots are still open.

Trail # 1 South from Marenisco to Wisconsin Border:  This trail is being groomed daily and is reported to be in good condition.

Trail # 8 East from Bergland to Ewen.  This trail is being groomed daily and is reported in good condition.

Trail # 8:  from Bergland to Wakefield.  Currently closed, trail has a few wet spots that are making impassable for trail sleds. We will be working on this as soon as we can. Our neighboring club to the west Gogebic Range Trail Authority even offered to help make this safe and passable. We will both keep you posted on progress with Trail 8 west.

Trail 102 from Bergland to Trail #11,  Has been packed down with just the groomer to fill in the wet spots. We will be out daily on this trail to get it back into shape.

From Trail # 1 that goes to White Pine to the intersection of Trail #102 is very wet and in bad condition. Use extreme caution when ride that section of trail. We are attempted to freeze those bad spots in but can’t keep up with the flow of water.

Trail # 13 North from Bergland to 101:  This trail is being groomed daily and is reported to be in good condition. Only one semi wet spot but is being filled nightly.

Trail # 13 south from Bergland to Root Cellar. This section of trail is 90% ridding on East Shore Road.

Groomers have been out fixing/repairing areas with open water.    Still some wet areas – use caution.

Groomer Report

Grooming daily and the trails are in very good condition, but we do have some water areas West of Watersmeet on Trail #2. Please ride with caution on this 30 mile stretch of trail.  We are doing the best we can with these water areas, they are difficult to deal with.

Trail #3 from the Wisconsin border to Watersmeet very good condition, Watersmeet to Paulding good condition with 1 wet area that is passable, 2 logging project on this trail one north of Forest Rd 5250 (trail 150) and the other is north of Bond Falls Rd so please use caution and respect the loggers

Trail #2 west of Watersmeet, good  condition but several wet areas, the worst wet area is in the Tunnel it is full of water about 8-12 inches it has a concrete bottom so you won’t get stuck .

Trail #2 east of Watersmeet to Trail #107, good condition

Trail #13 south to Cisco Chain, good condition

Ashland County trails are OPEN AND IN OVERALL FAIR CONDITION.  Ride at your own risk.  Possible standing water in some area.   Much of the Ashland County snowmobile trail system uses private property and could be lost if the property owners experiences issues. The most common complaints are snowmobiles not staying on trails or going off into fields that are not part of the trail, and loud noise from non-stock muffler systems. Respect the trail system. Area Report:

Trail report for January 6, 2020 – Trails are good.  Our groomers have been out grooming the trails and they have been turning out very nice and flat. There is not a lot of snow to work with but enough snow to do a good job. The weather looks like it will be sunny today and temps up into the 30’s which is not good for our trails. The next few days we expect a cool down, but we could really use a nice few inches of snow followed by a subzero freeze. Without that the trails remain soft and bumps are created quickly.  Please use extreme caution in all areas! Stay on marked trails! Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Trail Report – : Oconto County, Wisconsin – January 6, 2020

Reporter:Oconto County Tourism

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 6-8

Date of Report: January 6, 2020

Area Report:

Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club (Townsend) –  All the trails are freshly groomed. Does it get any better for anxious riders? All the trails from the Nicolet State trail ( the grade ) east of town are in good to very good condition with one wet spot. so watch for a puddle. Nothing you will get stuck in, so don’t panic.

West of 32 heading towards highway 64, the problem areas between intersections 510 & 512 with lack of snow has gotten very icy. So icy that the groomer had to struggle last night to get up two of the hills because of the icy slopes. So until we receive more heavy snow to pack down over the ice we will not be grooming down that way. That region is what is called The Bob Kroll trail. It was plowed down to dirt after the big snow by the loggers who cleared the trees for us. Without their efforts it would still be blocked by trees.

Paul Bunyan Riders Snowmobile Club (Lakewood) –  All Paul Bunyan Riders Trails  were groomed last night and are in very good condition.  The Wheeler Lake Trail is now groomed and reopened.  That was the last area to be groomed.  Hats off to Trail Boss Bob Prasser and his grooming crew to have our trail system 100 % groomed and open. Ride Safe !!!

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club (Mountain) – Chute Pond Snowmobile Club trails are open, and in fair to good “early season” condition. We were forced to close another trail section today because of excess standing water (see photo). The trail from Old 64 (INT#472) to the 18 Corridor (INT#455) is now closed. On all other open trails, watch for branches hanging down on the trails, and possible slushy and/or wet areas.

Exceptions (see map): trails that will remain closed at this time are from INT#451-INT#453 (from east of Hwy 32 behind the Junction to Jack Pine Rd), and from INT#447 north to the 18 Corridor trail near Cooked Lake (the northern pipeline trail). DO NOT ride the closed trails- they have not been cleared from the July wind storms because the swamps are still wet and have not allowed equipment to get in to work on those areas yet. The closed areas are tangles of fallen trees in a swampy area- you don’t want to go there.

As for the rest of the trails, “early season conditions” means there will be some bumps, dips, and ruts to deal with as the groomers continue to work on the trails. Be aware that any off-trail riding- even to take one ski off to “grab a little loose snow”- could be dangerous. The July wind storms have devastated many areas of our forested trails, and there are many trees and limbs on the ground just off the edges of the groomed trails. Please stay safe- stay on the groomed trails.

Riders are urged to reduce speed and ride with extra caution, as the forest and the trails look very different since the storm. There are numerous logging operations that will be ongoing throughout the season. Please use extra caution in these areas. No Chute Pond trails cross any lakes or rivers- and ice has been slow to form on most area lakes. Riding on frozen surfaces is not recommended. You are encouraged to carry a portable hand saw if possible, since limbs and branches continue to fall onto and over the trails.
