Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 18″ to 24″

Area Report:

Less traffic and colder weather has help to keep our trails in excellent condition.  Trail 6 west of town has been groomed all the way through swamps and all.  Trail 6 going east is still detoured.  Hopefully soon we will be able to get through once the wet area there freezes up.  Please obey posted speed limit on the roadways.  Trail 17 is set to open back up for snowmobile traffic.  Please use caution where that area of closure was.  We will not be grooming that area until we feel it has stiffen up enough to support our tractor and drag.  For up to the minute grooming status, please download the groomer tracking system app from your app store.  Follow the Phelps Snowmobile Club on Facebook and visit our website at http://phelpssnowmobileclub.com

Great news riders!!

Tuscobia has a great report on the section from Winter to Ojibwa, they are ooen, re-froze and grooming! Fabulous news!!

Other trail news, trails from the Chippewa Flowage to the north are reported to be wonderful!! The lakes are quite bare of snow but have great ice and we did see about an inch of fresh snow yesterday and we have several days that forecast this week of fresh snow, some days an inch others 1-3″ so this is great to see some fresh snow, especially on the lakes! The temps continue to be cold and we have a great base! Groomers in the Seeley Hills, Hayward, Nelson Lake, east of Hayward, Moose Lake, Lost Land Lake area continue to go out. Many through the county are gearing up to follow now that things are cold and lakes and swamps are froze.

Surrounding counties, Ashland (re-open!), Bayfield, Washburn and Price are open. Barron and Rusk have moved from closed to partially open.

This is great news to see the southern part of the county getting the right conditions and your trail miles have extended! Grab your sleds and gear and come out and ride!

Area Report:

All Washburn County Snowmobile Trails are open at this time. Trail conditions are fair with a  6 to 12 inch compacted snow base.  It has been a difficult year for snowmobile trail maintenance; Our local clubs are doing the best they can.  Significant warm temperatures and rain for days has been followed by 3 to 7 inches of new snow received on December 30th.  Caution is advised throughout the trail system.  Lake ice is still not safe at this time, including Long Lake and the Spider Lake Chain.  Swamps and wet areas on the trail system are likely to have standing water in places.  Some wet areas will not have been groomed with heavy equipment yet.  Also, please be aware that constant trail grooming will be occurring throughout the week.  Many trails will not be freshly groomed on January 1st.

Ashland County trails are OPEN AND IN OVERALL FAIR CONDITION. Ride at your own risk. There is possible standing water in some areas. Stay on the trail! Much of the Ashland County snowmobile trail system uses private property and could be lost if the property owners experiences issues. The most common complaints are snowmobiles not staying on trails or going off into fields that are not part of the trail, and loud noise from non-stock muffler systems. Respect the trail system.
