Area Report:

WELCOME BACK FOR THE 2019/2020 SEASON

The Barron County Snowmobile Trails are OPEN as of Friday, January 10th at noon. All trails will be open and groomed in fair condition. Caution should be used when encountering wetlands as some are not completely frozen.

A reminder that nearly all of the Barron County snowmobile trails use privately owned lands that we will not have access to if individuals continue to ride off the marked trails. Cutting corners and riding across fields outside of the marked trail is trespassing and will be strictly enforced.

We are also receiving an increasing number of complaints from noise caused by modified snowmobile exhaust systems, this is also illegal and citations will be issued to violators. To report off trail riding, other violations, or any trail concerns contact the Barron County Sheriff’s Office at 715-537-3106.

Please call 715-637-4275 if you have any questions or looking for a map of the Barron County snowmobile trails. You can also check the Rice Lake, Wisconsin Facebook page or www.travelwisconsin.com for updated trail conditions.

Winter Snowmobile and All-Season Trails (As of 1/10/2020)

Douglas County received a small dusting of snow over the last few days. Many of the trails are still open but do have some water on the trails and maybe rough in spots. These spots are still passible, just proceed with caution while riding our trails.  Clubs have been working hard to get the trail system open. Approximately 90% of Douglas County Trails are open.

PLEASE check the trail you intend to use is open and do not trespass on private property. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to utilize their property.  It just takes one owner to deny the use of their land for a trail to be permanently shut down, so please be courteous and wait for the trails to officially open.

The following all-season trails are currently open to ATV, UTV, and Snowmobiles:

Cross Country Ski Trails (As of 1/10/2020)

Douglas County Ski Trails – All service roads and parking lots are plowed. All ski trails are groomed on 12/31 but are in fair to poor condition. The trails have a good base, we are just waiting on a fair amount of new snow to groom again.

Superior Municipal Forest – All trails have been touched up as of 1/9/2020. The “flat” side of the Yellow Trail has had 2 grooming passes out to the end. The “hilly” side of the Yellow Trail is groomed only up to the 2nd bypass as tree work continues on that side of the trail. Check for the open sign on the ski shack as we are trying to staff the building until dusk when possible

Pattison State Park –  All trails were groomed and tracked on 1/9/2020.  Conditions are excellent with full track depth on the Overlook and Oak Ridge Trails. The Riverview Trail has full track depth for most of the trail, except for a few areas that have an uneven base. Please watch out for some debris scattered in areas from the windy conditions.

Brule River After Hours Trail –  Main trail sections were touched-up on 1/9/2020 for skating and classic tracks. The Classic Trail has been freshly groomed and tracked. Skiing conditions are excellent, especially with fresh light snow starting to cover the trails. Trails will be touched up again before Saturday.

Fifield Sno Drovers
All the trails in the Pike Lake area are in great shape with the exception of areas we’re not grooming yet due to water under the snow/ice. These areas are passible via snowmobile but may be a bit rough. This is the stretch of trail 101/10 from where it turns off the long straight-a-way leading to Northernaire/144 to the bridge at Fould’s creek. The trail 106/19 leading to Iron County remains closed until we get word that the Iron County club has been able to open their trail. We understand trail 101/10 is closed just east of Sugarbush Road due to open water in the swamp. The HOPE to reopen it on Thursday, 1/9 given the colder weather. The lakes are still not marked at this point due to slush and questionable ice conditions. While we’re hoping this cold snap improves the condition and we mark them soon, the best option is to stay off them until we’ve determined it is safe and mark them.

Lugerville Chasers 1/7/2020
Our trails are being groomed twice a week and are in good to excellent condition. We have a few bad spots that you need to take caution. First area is on Trail 80 going east and west. There are open water areas. We are hoping with cold temps that we can address these two areas. Good news is that you are able to sneak around both areas. Second area is on trail 90. Power company is updating power line poles so please drive slow in case they are on the trail.

Northwoods Hi Riders 1/7/2020
We have been grooming the highland areas around Solberg Lake, but still no major swamps. Trail 102 from Phillips to the 121 intersection above Gates Lake towards Wintergreen is groomed and in excellent riding condition. Trail 141 on the east side of Solberg is groomed and in excellent condition, trail 141 to Lugerville is partially groomed, and very rideable. Trail 112 out of Solberg Park is groomed, but there are logging operations going on along that trail. Trail 121 north of Solberg to Hick’s Landing area is NOT groomed due to the 2 major swamps on that trail, plus there are logging operations on each side of the swamps. Trails 121 going to Lugerville is not groomed east of Old 13 Road due to 2 swamps that are still not in condition to be groomed, but they are getting closer. You can ride the swamps with snowmobiles to get them packed down so they freeze, they are just a little choppy. Stay to the outside. Watch for small branches sticking into the trails. Solberg Lake is not marked as of yet, but maybe this weekend if it stays cold.

Prentice Bushbenders 1/7/2020
We have started grooming operations again and hope to have all trails that we can get to done by Wednesday night. The trails that have been groomed are in great condition. Areas that cannot be groomed yet because the swamps/creeks have not yet frozen down enough to get the groomer through are as follows; Trails 181 and 102 West and North of intersection 108. Trail 116 between County Road K and intersection 97a. Trail 120 North of Windy Lane. Trail 120 South of intersection 108 to the first gate. Trail 189 between Trail 102 (the Pine Line trail) and the Prentice Ogema Road. All trails are passable by snowmobile but the worst area are the 2 creeks North of Windy Lane. We are working on these areas daily and hope to be able to groom them within a week. Please ride safe and have fun.

Also it can not be stressed enough to only ride on marked trails. There were 2 fatalities this last weekend on Lake Nokomis when snowmobiles went through the ice.

Sno-Gypsies
1-6-20 The Tuscobia and Trail 80 were groomed yesterday. Today 80N, 89, 90 and 91 were done. Trail 91 west of Butternut lake was partially done but due to some open swamp it was not completed. If anyone feels adventurous you can ride it and open it up.

Price County has 500 miles of trail, maintained by 9 volunteer clubs. You’ll find beautiful scenery and wildlife along the trail system to enhance your experience.

Trail Conditions: Open

Snow Cover: 6″ to 8″

Date of Report: January 10, 2020

Area Report:

Trails are now open and in early season riding condition.  The rain during the Christmas holiday cause our creeks to rise and swamps to thaw.

We have two trails closed:

  • Trail 14A from intersection 9 to Chain Lake. This trail has a lake route and ice is not safe at this time.
  • Corridor 33 from the Albertville Tavern to Club 40. This trail was closed by a landowner because it was being ridden last week when trails were closed. Club 40 is accessible from the North and the Albertville Tavern is accessible from the south.

Trails are rated in poor to fair condition and most are groomed.  Please ride with caution.  Some trails have been re-routed due to standing crops.  Many of the wetland areas have been packed by snowmobile but the ground is not frozen enough to support the weight of the groomer.  We have tried to groom some of those areas and broken through ice, leaving the trail rough or possibly with open water.  Those areas are passable on the edge of the trail.  If in doubt, turn around and find another route.  Some sections of trail have not been groomed for this reason.  Known areas with hazards are identified on an online trail map posted with the official trail report on the Chippewa Valley Snowmobile Association (CVSO) website http://chippewasnowmobiletrails.com/trail-conditions

Ride Safe and Stay on the trail.

Area Report:

All Washburn County Snowmobile Trails are open at this time. Trail conditions are fair with a  6 to 12 inch compacted snow base.  It has been a difficult year for snowmobile trail maintenance; Our local clubs are doing the best they can.  Significant warm temperatures and rain for days has been followed by 3 to 7 inches of new snow received on December 30th.  Caution is advised throughout the trail system.  Lake ice is still not safe at this time, including Long Lake and the Spider Lake Chain.  Swamps and wet areas on the trail system are likely to have standing water in places.  Some wet areas will not have been groomed with heavy equipment yet.  Also, please be aware that constant trail grooming will be occurring throughout the week.  Many trails will not be freshly groomed on January 1st.

Trail report for January 10, 2020 – Trails remain good. The groomers were out last night and will be out throughout the entire weekend. There is little snow to work with on the trail, but we can lay out a nice flat trail. We are expecting some snow over the weekend but doesn’t seem to be any significant amounts. With the increase in traffic over the weekend it is best to get out early since the warmer temps degrade the trails quickly. On Saturday January 11, 2020 we are having a fundraiser Brat Fry at the Granary from 11:00 – 2:00. We invite you to support this event. Hope to see you there.  Please use extreme caution in all areas! Stay on marked trails! Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – January 10, 2020

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 10-18 inches packed

Date of Report: January 10, 2020

Area Report:

Trails in Bayfield County are excellent right now! Wet spots are freezing, lakes are getting staked and groomers have been busy getting the trails in great shape. Previous wet spots may be choppy so still exercise caution in normally wet areas.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: NTG trails were all groomed on Mon 1/6 & Tues 1/7. 10-12” base. Trail system is 100% froze up and all marshes have been gone thru with the groomers! Excellent condition!

Will be grooming again prior to the weekend.

Barnes Barnestormers: The Barnes trails are in great condition, most have been groomed twice this week. We are going to do 31 south of Mulligan Creek Road on Sunday. That trail has been groomed once and is being used. We have been waiting on the colder weather before going again. Please exercise caution if traveling in that area, loggers are working and using parts of the trail

Drummond SnoJacks: The Drummond groomer will be out starting Wednesday night and will have all trails groomed before the weekend.  All trails remain in excellent condition with a 12″ base. The only trouble spot is on trail 63 north, the Drummond Connector at Arne Carlson Road where the deep water hole should now be frozen over but rough. Use caution there until we get more snow coverage to restore the surface. The Namakagon Club has groomed trail 63 through the Bibon Swamp for the first time this week with their Prinoth. It has been reported that the stick trail will go up on Lake Owen on Thursday. Until then the Lake Owen Drive detour remains in effect.

Washburn Valhallers: Trail #13 NORTH from Washburn to Valhalla was fresh groomed 1/6/20 and is in excellent condition. A few icy spots, but really in good shape. Trail #13 SOUTH from Washburn to the Tri-County Corridor was groomed 1/7/20 and is also reported in very good condition. There still is one section of heavy, deep ice, just south of the Bono creek crossing (S-Curve by the Church; just North of Sparky’s). We are unable to groom through this short, 1 block section yet, so please use extreme caution and look for a safe, temporary go-around. We will be re-grooming both trails before the weekend so expect excellent riding in the Washburn/Valhalla areas this weekend!

All trails in the Valhalla area are in excellent riding condition except for trail 1 from Mountain Road to trail 31. We expected to be in excellent condition by the Weekend.

South Shore (Port Wing, Herbster, Cornucopia): Trail 1 between Herbster and Corny has been groomed out to Mountain rd and is very good with just a few running water spots. Trail 40 and 41 along with the Wally Polk trail trail are being groomed now and are also very good to excellent condition.

Trail Report – : Oconto County, Wisconsin – January 10, 2020

Reporter:Oconto County Tourism

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 5-8

Date of Report: January 10, 2020

Area Report:

Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club (Townsend) –  All the trails from the Nicolet State trail ( the grade ) east of town are in good to very good condition with one wet spot that has mostly frozen over, so watch for a puddle. Nothing you will get stuck in, so don’t panic. With the cold weather last night maybe some of the wet spots plaguing all of the Clubs in the State will start to freeze up and make things normal again?

West of 32 heading towards highway 64, the problem areas between intersections 510 & 512 with lack of snow has gotten very icy. So icy that the groomer had to struggle last night to get up two of the hills because of the icy slopes. So until we receive more heavy snow to pack down over the ice we will not be grooming down that way. That region is what is called The Bob Kroll trail. It was plowed down to dirt after the big snow by the loggers who cleared the trees for us. Without their efforts it would still be blocked by trees.

Taking that area out of the picture, our trails are in good to very good riding condition.

Paul Bunyan Riders Snowmobile Club (Lakewood) –  The groomers were out last night. The entire east side was done. The west side only had a couple tracks on it from the night before.  Trails are very good to excellent.  Grooming tonight is unlikely with the warm temperatures in the forecast.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club (Mountain) – Chute Pond Snowmobile Club trails are open, freshly groomed, and in good condition on the NST and all trails west of the NST (RR grade). Trails east of the NST are in fair to good “early season” condition. We have a trail section closed because of excess standing water (see photo)- the trail from Old 64 (INT#472) to the 18 Corridor (INT#455) is now closed. On all other open trails, watch for possible slushy and/or wet/icy/rough frozen areas.

Exceptions (see map): trails that will remain closed indefinitely are from INT#451-INT#453 (from east of Hwy 32 behind the Junction to Jack Pine Rd), and from INT#447 north to the 18 Corridor trail near Cooked Lake (the northern pipeline trail). DO NOT ride the closed trails- they have not been cleared from the July wind storms because the swamps are still wet and have not allowed equipment to get in to work on those areas yet. The closed areas are tangles of fallen trees in a swampy area- you don’t want to go there.

On our trails east of the NST (RR grade), “early season conditions” means there will be some bumps, dips, and ruts to deal with as the groomers continue to work on the trails. Be aware that any off-trail riding- even to take one ski off to “grab a little loose snow”- could be dangerous. The July wind storms have devastated many areas of our forested trails, and there are many trees and limbs on the ground just off the edges of the groomed trails. Please stay safe- stay on the groomed trails.

Riders are urged to reduce speed and ride with extra caution, as the forest and the trails look very different since the storm. There are numerous logging operations that will be ongoing throughout the season. Please use extra caution in these areas. No Chute Pond trails cross any lakes or rivers- and ice has been slow to form on most area lakes. Riding on frozen surfaces is not recommended. You are encouraged to carry a portable hand saw if possible, since limbs and branches continue to fall onto and over the trails. Please- ride sober, stay to the right, and stay on the marked trails.
