Trail Report – : Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – January 13, 2020

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 16-22 inches

Date of Report: January 13, 2020

Area Report:

Trail report for January 13, 2020 – Trails are good. Today it is snowing but not much accumulation. With the lack of fresh snow there is not a lot of snow to work with on the trail, but the trails are turning out nice and flat. We are expected to get more snow tomorrow, but we will have to see how much we will get. The temps have been staying colder so the snow on the trails is not melting. If it keeps snowing throughout the week the trails should remain just fine. Watch out for groomers who can be on the trail any time of the day or night. Follow all directions from them. Thanks to everyone who worked and supported our fundraiser Brat Fry at the Granary Saturday. It was a good time had by all!  Please use extreme caution in all areas! Stay on marked trails! Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Area Report:

The weekends storm was a bust.  We ended up with only 2-3″ of snow county wide. We still need more snow to get things going around here.  There are a couple small snow events in the forecast this week and then another potential for a bigger storm by the weekend.  So things may be changing.  Please remember to stay off trails until they are officially posted as open.   Check back here, our website, Facebook page as well as our snow phone for updates as we get more snow!

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN EAGLE RIVER
Varying conditions after heavy riding weekend

East of Eagle River received about 1 inch of SNOW over night.  Chance of some SNOW today doesn’t look like much.  Maybe another inch tonight. High today of 26 with a low of 23. More SNOW on tap for Wednesday & Friday.  Trails can use a fresh up of SNOW.  Time to ride!

Groomer Tracking System reports no grooming in the last 24 hours

Good riding choices would be heading east on 10E into Three Lakes trails.  The section between Loon Lk Rd & Bloom Rd is rough but the rest including 9MI trail in shape.  OR heading south from town on 3/Alt13 aka “the grade” all the way to Three Lakes. Very good riding.

Caution Areas

17S from 17/7aka Paintball Field intersection to the Sugar Camp connect.  This area is improving as Club has been packing snow into the wet mushy areas to firm up. Rough & mushy sections getting better each day.

Section of 10/13 from Hwy G to Adams Rd – this area had water & mushy/muddy areas.  The Club is also working on this area packing snow in to firm up. Rough sections much better.

Wisconsin River Bridge aka 10W/13N – frozen but very icy under snow.  Grooming of the eastside trail & westside trails(Deep Lk Rd). No grooming across bridge due to conditions so expect rough & potential for soft spots.

In general trails sections in swamps have rough areas.

Catfish & Eagle Lake Trails are NOT MARKED.  Please stay off.  A group is checking periodically for ice depth & slush.  Stay tuned.

Colder weather is just what the trails need.  Hopefully soon all trails can be groomed and run as planned.  All the Phelps trails had been groomed last night and the same is expected for tonight.  Please use caution on trail 17 between the intersection to the lake and St. Louis road.  One bad spot that has just frozen up but has not been groomed. Please remember that the speed limit on all trail routes on roadways is 25 MPH.  Also, stay on marked trail across the lakes.  If a lake is not marked, it is not safe.  Enjoy your time in the northwoods.  Lets ride!

Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – January 11, 2020

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 10 inches (+/-) on the trail

Date of Report: January 11, 2020

Area Report:

Our trails continue to be in excellent condition. We have had a LOT of extremely heavy traffic – so they have been pretty beat up by the afternoon. However, we have been out every night to smooth them over again for the following day.

Lakes update: Plum and Star Lakes are still NOT marked. However, Plum is getting close and both lakes could be marked next Wednesday or Thursday. As always NEVER cross a lake that is not marked. ESPECIALLY THIS YEAR – IF a lake IS marked, stay by the markers when crossing!!!

I said “especially this year stay by the markers” because this year has been one of the worst for the forming ice. We had SOME early ice when the temps were really cold back in November (2019). Then we had a LOT of snow before that ice was very thick. The snow insulated the existing ice from freezing any thicker. Then we had ice form and most of the lakes finished freezing over. Then we had about a week of upper 30s, some lower 40s, and unfortunately rain. This was on top of ice conditions that were shaky to begin with. SO even if a lake is marked – this does NOT mean the entire lake is safe!!! There have been numerous cases of cars, trucks, ATVs, and yes – snowmobiles going through. Unfortunately, there were also 2 riders that lost their lives. The part of the lake (Nokomis – Tomahawk) is not ever marked. However, it is a tragic reminder that if you don’t see markers – don’t cross!!!

For those who don’t know; the snowmobile club does NOT mark the lakes nor do they make the decision on when to mark them.

A few updates:

Trail 5 to Wolfs Eagle Lodge, 18 off of 5 to 12 and 12 to the Flowage and back to 18 are all groomed. Also 21 to 3 to 8 has been groomed. Crew from Loui’s Landing and Musky Sno were out about 10 hours grooming that area. A few cautionary areas; a section on 18 between Hwy B and trail 12 there is still some standing water in a low land, about 2′ deep but you can go around the water. Also there is a stream between Hwy 77 and Moose Lake that is not froze. It is snall and passable but you come down a bank to the small stream and back up so ride down with caution not to hit the bank with your skis. Trail 21 along the Flowage has had an ongoing issue with a beaver dam that the DNR has intervened but beavers, well they will be beavers so they rebuild so there is a barricade around that area between the Flowage and Musky Tail.

Spider Lake in Washburn is staked. As is Lake Long Lake and currently working on Chetec.

All trails in the Flambeau Forest have been groomed and are excellent.

Trail 17 past Nelson Lake is currently closed due to some flooding that had occurred.

A groomer is out on 31 today and the LCO/Grindstone area. 31 has had some reports of rough, this is a heavily rode trail and does cross swamps making the groomer not able to groom. The swamps are froze and safe for snowmobiles but have not been for heavy equipment. They are out today checking how far they can go and will report later today.

A full report is that trails are excellent! Many more groomers have been out, lakes are staked and safe (with the exception of Lake Hayward, waiting on report). The lakes have had a lot of bare ice but we have received some fresh snow so there is plenty for lubrication but can be slick if riding without studs. So just take your time. The temps continue to be in high teens and low 20’s, so perfect for riding!

Surrounding counties are open. For their full detailed reports you can visit travelwi.com.

Thank you to all the volunteers! Trails are beautiful!
