SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN EAGLE RIVER
Varying conditions
Heavy traffic

Yep more SNOW yesterday.  Easy 8+- inches since Thursday night!  Wet packy SNOW.  Temps could be cooperating.  Has been in low 30’s for the last few days.  Today it looks like it will be in the high 20’s. And finally in the low teens at night for the next week.  Still no evil sun.  Looks to be cloudy for the entire week.  More SNOW moving in potentially next Saturday.  Even with the higher temps trails are holding good with all the deep SNOW!

Ton of traffic this weekend.  Large groups riding everywhere.  Plus the MS Ride & Women on Snow.  Groomers have had their work cut out for them.

Groomer Tracking System shows in the last 24 hours once again nearly all trails groomed. Working with only 2 pieces of equipment they are doing double time get everything groomed.  When you see a groomer gives the drivers a thumbs up.

Here are the sections the were NOT groomed:

  • Alt 13 aka 3S from 10E/Atl 13 intersection to the Three Lakes connect
  • GranpaGraham aka 1
  • 17N from intersection of 1 to Columbus Rd
  • 13N heading north after the Wisconsin River Bridge section

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked.  Please stay by the orange reflective barrels.

Caution Areas

Soft snow so it can be squirrelly.  So slow down or you might meet yourself coming around the corners!  P.S.  stay on your side of the trails.  Straight aways, hills & corners.

In general found trails sections especially in swamps have rough areas. Covered with plenty of snow but the bumps have set in the base & it is hard to correct. Sections on 13N beyond Hwy G very rough, Loon Lk Rd to Bloom Rd section of 10E rough, section of 17N from trail 1 to Columbus Rd rough. 70W section from Sundstein Rd running past the Lincoln Townhall heading west to Synergy rough sections.  17S from Paintball field to Sugar Camp connect.  Don’t be tempted to ride off trail.

It’s Sunday so would expect it will quiet down a bit!  Time to take a quick trip up to Bauer’s for some of Donna’s Damn Good Chicken soup for lunch.

KEEP THINKING COLD can use it & DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!

See you on the trails!

Winter Snowmobile and All-Season Trails (As of 1/24/2020)

Currently, ALL of Douglas County trails are open. Douglas County has received more snow in the last few days!  Please note, deer have been reported on trails, so please keep an eye out while traveling.

PLEASE check the trail you intend to use is open and do not trespass on private property. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to utilize their property.  It just takes one owner to deny the use of their land for a trail to be permanently shut down, so please be courteous and wait for the trails to officially open.

❄️❄️Hurley Area Snow Report Friday, January 24, 2020

The White Thunder Riders and Iron County Forestry Department have the North Iron County Trails ready for the weekend.  The weather has allowed the trails to set up nicely, as we go into the weekend a chance of snow is in the forecast and temperatures in the low 30s.  This will cause the trails to soften up —- watch the corners and be aware of oncoming snowmobiles and groomers.  We continue to hear good things about Mercer, Manitowish Waters, Vilas County and our neighbors to the east.

USE CAUTION ON THE LAKES AND FLOWAGES.

Trail 15 to 15A is now open with NO REROUTE.

Trail 6 in the Whitecap Mountains Resort area has an active logging operation.  Use CAUTION.  (Between E and E)

Trail 160 in Michigan is OPEN with a reroute.

We would like to remind everyone to STAY on the TRAIL.  Stay OFF the lakes and flowages.  RESPECT our landowners.  If you come upon a groomer WAIT for the groomer driver to come to a complete stop and signal for you to continue.

Show your appreciation by attending club events, not just ours but neighboring clubs as well.  Remember “United we Trail, Divided we Fail”

Upcoming Club Events:
Mercer Sno Goers, Breakfast Fundraiser 1/25/20
Manitowish Sno Skeeters Breakfast at Pea Patch 2/2/20
White Thunder Riders Auction Fundraiser 2/15/20

Gogebic Range Trail Authority – Snowmobile & ORV Club Trail Report

  • Trail Condition: Excellent
  • Last Groomed: January 24th, 2020
  • Base Snowfall: 36″
  • Reported On: January 24th, 2020 @ 9:43am

Overall Story:  VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT

Friday 1/24 9:00 am CST:    Trails are in fantastic shape!!  Your militia of GRTA volunteer groomer operators continue to run around the clock!  It has not stopped snowing this week picking up 1-2 inches each day it seems.  Temperatures are warm and that means the snow moves very easily.  Driving hard through corners and excessive track spin will destroy trails fast.  We have 12-30″ base (20″ on average) and all that snow can make big bumps.  Ride like you have to return that route later in the day and everyone’s experience will improve!

Suggested Ride Pattern:  Leave in the morning on trail 8 and return on trail 2.

WARNINGS AND NOTICES:   We are begging riders to ride off trail legally as there are 1-million acres of public land east of Wakefield to off trail ride on – please only ride legal areas!  The Ottawa National Forest is 990,000 acres and much of it open to cross-country riding (no trail/road) if there is 6″ or more of snow.  Several restricted areas, contact the forest for further information. Call 906-932-1330

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:

Overall Rating:  EXCELLENT

Last groomed 1/24/2020.  The trail had about 8 hours of set time with no sled traffic, it should hold up well today.

Trail 8 from Wakefield to Tula Crossing:

Overall Rating: EXCELLENT

Last Groomed 1/24.  This is one of our most heavily travelled trails.  It gets bumpy each day by 5pm if temps are above 25 degrees.  There is a new traffic pattern on the northern end due to a plowed section.  Please follow the new route for the remainder of this season.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):

Overall Rating:  EXCELLENT

Last Groomed 1/21.  There is logging about 1/2 way north on the trail, YIELD TO LOGGERS AND GIVE THEM RESPECT – IT’S THEIR LAND!   STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!!!!   This is our most scenic trail and is a treat to ride!  Stay on the trail in the farm fields.  Over 25 landowners are involved to make this trail a reality, please respect them and ride responsibly.  There are several scenic vistas on the trail:

Bald Mountain “NORTH” lookout viewing Madeline Island/ mouth of the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior

Bald Mountain “SOUTH” lookout viewing Gogebic Range (Powderhorn, Copper Peak)

Montreal River Gorge look out

Superior Falls Waterfall Complex.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):

Overall Rating:  GOOD TO EXCELLENT

Last Groomed 1/21.  A couple icy areas remain rough due to freezing the trail in.  PLEASE YIELD TO ANY AND ALL LOGGING TRAFFIC.  There is a short section of dual use the landowner (Keweenaw Land) has graciously approved us to use along with them.  It is private land and we are guests, please act like it.  THANK YOU to all the people who have helped brush this trail!  You made our groomer operators day twice over by helping brush the trail for us.  This is what makes snowmobiling great!!

11N (Wakefield, MI to South boundary Rd/White Pine):  Closed due to off trail riding.  Seeking local community support with ideas on how to reopen it.  200 yards of private property closed this 25 mile trail.

County Airport.  Caution is advised.  There is a reroute of trail 161, corridor 12, at Musser Drive.  The route follows Musser Drive for about one mile.  This is due to a landowner removing his permission for the trail. The number one cause for trail closure is riders going off trail and free styling.  STAY ON MARKED TRAILS.  There will be brushing operations on some trails, watch for warning signs.  All trails are groomed at least two times per week.

1/19/2020 LK RIVER PIONEERS – Pioneer trails west of Phillips are in good condition.  There will be ruff areas in the Million Acre Swamp, caution is advised.  Ruff areas may be encountered on trail 80, and 85, corridor 12.  Logging operations can be found on trail 85.
