Reporter:boulderwi

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 18-24 inches

Date of Report: February 12, 2020

Area Report:

Trail report for February 12, 2020 – Trails are good. The present temp today here in Boulder Junction is 14 Deg. We had a dusting of snow yesterday and may get a dusting of snow for the next few days. We also expect the temps for the next day to get colder with highs in the single digits. With the lack of snow on the trail it’s hard to keep the trails flat and there are many areas that can be icy, and the snow can be very hard especially in the corners. Please use caution. The groomers are out there doing the best they can to make your ride more enjoyable for you. When you see them give them give them a thumbs up and follow all directions from the groomer. They can be out on the trail any time day or night. Pray for more snow! Stay on marked trails! Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Groomer Report

Overall Story:

GOOD TO EXCELLENT, SHORT SECTIONS FAIR, CONSTANT GROOMING CONTINUES

Monday 2/10/2020 9:00 am CST:

No fresh snow, but the temps are allowing the groomers to keep trails flat.  Corners here and there are starting to get icy in between grooms.  We are seeking additional groomer operators to join us ASAP.  Local lodging can be provided for committed volunteers.  There looks to be some snow later this week, the upcoming weekend should be exceptional riding!

WARNINGS AND NOTICES:   We are begging riders to ride off trail legally as there is 1-million acres of public land east of Wakefield to off trail ride on – please only ride legal areas!  The Ottawa National Forest is 990,000 acres and much of it open to cross-country riding (no trail/road) if there is 6″ or more of snow.  Several restricted areas, contact the forest for further information.  Call 906-932-1330

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:

Overall rating:  VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT

Last groomed 2/09/2020.    Please do not ride on sidewalks near Holiday and try to keep noise down in town.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:

Overall rating:  FAIR TO EXCELLENT

Last groomed 2/10/2020.  This is a tight trail with tremendous amounts of traffic.  Corners will get icy along with the hill climbs in between grooming.  We’re going to do some snow finding grooms later this week to add fresh snow into the base to help it hold for the weekend.   This trail is featuring a brand new section to enjoy this season, the club eliminated Prospect road route and moved the trail completely into the woods eliminating 1.5 miles of road route.  PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL AND RESPECT THESE LANDOWNERS!

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:

Overall Rating:  EXCELLENT

Last groomed 2/10/2020.  Also in the best shape of the season.  The section from Wakefield east to Highway 2 needs additional passes to finish cutting the deep inside corner bumps and widen the trail.  We expect to get to that this week yet.

Trail 8 from Wakefield to Tula Crossing:

Overall Rating: EXCELLENT

Last Groomed 2/10/2020.  In excellent condition, be aware of a new traffic pattern on the northern end due to a plowed section.  Please follow the new route for the remainder of this season.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):

Overall Rating:  EXCELLENT

Last Groomed 2/7/2020.  There is logging about 1/2 way north on the trail, YIELD TO LOGGERS AND GIVE THEM RESPECT – IT’S THEIR LAND!   STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!!!!   This is our most scenic trail and is a treat to ride!  Stay on the trail in the farm fields.  Over 25 landowners are involved to make this trail a reality, please respect them and ride responsibly.  There are several scenic vistas on the trail:

Bald Mountain “NORTH” lookout viewing Madeline Island/ mouth of the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior

Bald Mountain “SOUTH” lookout viewing Gogebic Range (Powderhorn, Copper Peak)

Montreal River Gorge look out

Superior Falls Waterfall Complex.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):

Overall Rating:  EXCELLENT

Last Groomed 2/10/2020.  Increased logging traffic is in the area,  PLEASE YIELD TO ANY AND ALL LOGGING TRAFFIC.  There is a short section of dual use the landowner (Keweenaw Land) has graciously approved us to use along with them.  It is private land and we are guests, please act like it.

11N (Wakefield, MI to South boundary Rd/White Pine):  Closed due to off trail riding.  Seeking local community support with ideas on how to reopen it.  200 yards of private property closed this 25 mile trail.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN EAGLE RIVER
Fair to Good – Many icy sections

The day time warm up continues with a high of 30 today. Night 2 below with a start of cold temps.  SNOW moving in later morning.  1 inch in the forecast.  Thursday high of 5 & low of 14 below. Very little SNOW in the last few days.  What is falling is of the Lake Effect variety.  START DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!

SNOW depths remain deep in Eagle River. 20 inches on average.  Teens or lower at night for the next week.  Winter isn’t going anywhere.

Groomer Tracking Systems (GTS Trails) reports following trails groomed over the last 24 hours

  • 10/13 heading south through town
  • Alt13 aka 3S to Three Lakes turn around
  • 70W to the St. Germain turn around
  • 7 aka the paintball field
  • 17S to the Sugar Camp turn around (trail along Hwy 17S)
  • 17N to trail 1
  • 1N to the Eagle River Boat Launch
  • A very small section of Uncle Kent’s trail
  • All of the 13’s in the Bauer’s Dam area & Buckatabon Bridge area

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked.  Eagle Lake has slight bumps but nothing very bad.  Icy with blow off of snow in some sections.  Please slow down.

Rode yesterday on the way to a 3 day sledding trip to eastern Wisconsin.  Headed from our house on trail 10 east of Eagle River into town.  While not groomed the trail was GOOD. This includes Bloom Rd to Loon Lake Rd.  Too “the grade” to town.  It has traffic type bumps. Met the rest of the group on 10/13 by the historic railroad depot.  From there headed north on 10/13 all the way to the connect with Conover trail 3N. Trails were GOOD.  Conover trail 3N was EXCELLENT. 3N to 8 to 6 all were EXCELLENT.  Phelps trail 6 heading east was GOOD to VERY GOOD for the first half.  Closer to town trails were GOOD to FAIR.  Entered Three Lakes/Brule Trails which were fantastic & EXCELLENT all the way to the connect to the Blue Ox trails in Florence county.  6 to the White Tail Inn was GOOD.  Best I’ve seen in a while for that section.  From White Tail Inn to Florence trails were a mixed bag.  Mostly GOOD but there was one swamp section that was POOR and a few sections with riding chop.  Coming into Florence roads & street were nearly bare of SNOW.  Headquarters are the Doll House Bed & Breakfast.  More tomorrow on day 2 of our 13 sled adventure.

THINK COLD & KEEP DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!!!  P.S. No evil sun either!!

See you on the trails!

Winter Snowmobile and All-Season Trails (As of 2/11/2020)

Currently, ALL of Douglas County trails are open and are reporting great to excellent condition.  Please note, deer have been reported on trails, so please keep an eye out while traveling.

PLEASE check the trail you intend to use is open and do not trespass on private property. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to utilize their property.  It just takes one owner to deny the use of their land for a trail to be permanently shut down, so please be courteous and wait for the trails to officially open.

❄️❄️Hurley Area Snow Report Tuesday, February 11, 2020

Our trail boss from the White Thunder Riders called earlier to report that groomers have been out grooming from the weekend of activity and trails are in good shape.  At this time, there are no problem areas, but we always recommend to use caution.  Snow is in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures varying from mid 20’s dropping down to single digits.

We continue to hear good things about Mercer, Manitowish Waters, Vilas County and our neighbors to the east.

USE CAUTION ON THE LAKES AND FLOWAGES.

We have received multiple reports of “off trail riding”.

LISTEN — it’s pretty simple. Stay. On. The. Marked. Trail.

Those of you who continue to ride off trail are jeopardizing the trails for EVERYONE.  We welcome each of you to enjoy our area and scenic trails.  RESPECT our local landowners.

If you come upon a groomer WAIT for the groomer driver to come to a complete stop and signal for you to continue.

Show your appreciation by attending club events, not just ours but neighboring clubs as well.  Remember “United we Trail, Divided we Fail”
