Reporter:minocqua

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: hard ice base

Date of Report: March 3, 2020

Area Report:

Took a ride yesterday on our trail system and 2 others, some clubs have suspended there grooming because lack of snow, road routes are gone, town trails are bare to a little ice with no lube, sleds overheating until you get in the woods, looks like end of season coming with warm temps and little snow, Wish I had better news but future does not look good, If we get dumped on then you could get a last ride in but for now does not look good, also the lakes are getting very icy and slick with little snow.

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – March 3, 2020

Reporter:tpeters

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 12″ to 20″

Date of Report: March 3, 2020

Area Report:

What a very strange winter!!  Tons of snow in November and December, a little rain, more snow, and warmer temps!!  Aaaah, snow Gods, what are you up to?  Trails here in the Houghton/Hancock/Keweenaw area are a little of everything.  Trails going through town are very snirty (snow, dirt) and icy at the beginning and end of the day.  Once you get out of town going north out of Hancock, there is plenty of snow on the trails.  Staging out of the Vansville or anywhere up north is also an option.  Getting into Copper Harbor may have some bare roads, but using common sense and walking a block into town is no problem.  Reports from riders yesterday said that getting into Gay is no problem and over Brockway too.  Snow is in the forecast in the next few days, so I am hoping we get at least 6 to 10 inches.  Groomers are out as able overnight and keeping the trails up.  I haven’t had much of a report going south, but I know Twin Lakes had plenty of snow, so I am assuming once you get out of Houghton heading south that the trails should be good.  Not sure how far past Twin Lakes.

Please stay off of the canal between Houghton and Hancock.  That is not safe, especially with the warmer temps.  Long story short,  I would describe the riding at this time as close to late season riding.  Great in some areas, yucky in others.  Get out there and do a little Heikki Lunta Snow Dance!!

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Good

Date of Report: March 3, 2020

Area Report:

Conditions in the Lake Gogebic Area remain good on the North end and fair to good on the South end of the Lake to the Wiscsonsin border.    It’s currently 28 degrees and snowing and we’re forecasted for more snow this week.     Snowfall this year is in excess of 140” and our trails still have a great base.   Groomers will be out nightly when temps are below freezing.    Riders are reporting good conditions and recommend to just ride early and plan your stop accordingly.    Mother Nature is not done with this season just yet and you know what they say when March comes in like a lamb….    Gogebic Lodge is hosting their fishing tournament on Saturday – so just use extra caution on the lake as there will be a lot of shacks and ice fishermen.

  • Trail # 1 South: Towards Marenisco from Trail # 8 (Ethelwood Grade) is being groomed nightly and is reported to be in good condition.

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 15-18

Date of Report: March 3, 2020

Area Report:

The  Langlade County snowmobile trail system is in good to very good conditions.  As it gets later into the snowmobile season, expect some trails to have isolated bare spots, especially in the corners, and less snow leading up to roadway intersections.

The Langlade County snowmobile trail system (Zones A & B) is open with restrictions as of 8 a.m Thursday, January 2, 2020.

Several trail segments will remain closed until further notice due to storm debris from the July windstorm or standing water. These include the following trails between:

  • Intersection 62-77 (Summit Lake to Pearson area)
  • Intersection 101B- 98 (Lily Area)
Click here to download the 2019-2020 Langlade County Snowmobile map.
Numerous logging operations are ongoing throughout Langlade County, on both public and private lands. Please reduce speeds and use caution as these shared trails/roads will be plowed with occasional vehicular traffic.   Stretches of trail may be rough with standing water in low-lying areas. Riders are advised to stay on the marked trail.

These trails will be open to ATV’s after January 9, 2020.  ATV’s are not allowed on snowmobile trails when the temperature is above 28° F.

UTV’s are not allowed on the Langlade County Snowmobile trail system.

Snowmobile Trails

Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club (Townsend) –  3/1/20

The groomers were out last night working their magic.  We will continue grooming tonight weather permitting. The trail remain fine in good to very good riding condition east of Highway 32, though icy with a few bare spots starting to show up.  The trails between intersection 510 & 512 is rated very poor riding condition.  We will not be grooming that area until we get more snow.

Paul Bunyan Riders Snowmobile Club (Lakewood) –  3/2/20

Grooming for the season has ended. Trails are in fair to good condition.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club (Mountain) – 3/1/2020

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club trails are open and in fair to good condition. Most trails east of Hwy 32 are in fair condition, with many icy spots, and the snowcover is thin. Most trails west of Hwy 32 are in good condition, with a flat, hardpacked trail base with some icy spots. The season is nearing the end- we are in “late season” conditions. The warm weather has caused increasing bare/burned out spots, and the melting has caused some slushy/icy areas. There are still some nice trails to ride, but the number of ugly spots is growing- this upcoming week’s weather will determine the fate of our trails. Some fresh snow would help improve the trails, but that may not happen. Please check back as the week progresses for more updates.

NEW DETOUR: There is a new detour route from INT#447 that runs north and west and intersects with the 18 Corridor trail at Riverview Rd (see map- detour is shown in red). Thank you to the Towns of Mountain and Riverview for allowing the use of the unplowed town roads to complete this detour. The detour route is groomed and marked.

Exceptions (see map): Trails that will remain closed indefinitely are from INT#451-INT#453 (from east of Hwy 32 behind the Junction to Jack Pine Rd), and from INT#447 north to the 18 Corridor trail near Cooked Lake (the northern pipeline trail). DO NOT ride the closed trails- they have not been cleared from the July wind storms because the swamps are still wet and have not allowed equipment to get in to work on those areas yet. The closed areas are tangles of fallen trees in a swampy area- you don’t want to go there.

Cautions for the entire season: Be aware that any off-trail riding- even to take one ski off to “grab a little loose snow”- could be dangerous. The July wind storms have devastated many areas of our forested trails, and there are many trees and limbs on the ground just off the edges of the groomed trails. Please stay safe- stay on the groomed trails. Riders are urged to reduce speed and ride with extra caution, as the forest and the trails look very different since the storm. There are numerous logging operations that will be ongoing throughout the season. Please use extra caution in these areas. No Chute Pond trails cross any lakes or rivers- use extreme caution on all frozen surfaces. You are encouraged to carry a portable hand saw if possible, since limbs and branches continue to fall onto and over the trails. Please- ride sober, stay to the right, and stay on the marked trails.

Bagley & Brazeau Joyriders – 2/28/20

The trails took a hard hit from the sun and the heavy traffic last weekend, but they are still ride able. The groomers are working hard again, to give you at least 1 more weekend to ride. The trails are fair to very good condition. The best trails are the west side of Parkway Rd. We are not grooming in some of the marshes and low areas again, also watch for icy spots.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN EAGLE RIVER
Adventure Sledding time of the year
Varying conditions

Groomer Tracking Systems (GTS Trails) reports in the last 24 hours:

Trail 10/13 heading north from the Groomer Barn to Conover connect & the east side approach to the Wisconsin River bridge area of trail 10/13

Cloudy this morning & looks to be cloudy all day.  High of 35.  Low tonight of 19.  Tomorrow high of 37 & low of 15.  SNOW showers Wednesday night into Thursday. Inch or two.

This is the adventure sledding part of the season.  Meaning when you ride you are going to find every sort of condition.  SNOW covered. Burn through.  Icy.  Mushy with even some water especially road crossing.  As for road routes most are bare.  Under cover sections are shiny ice.  This is a time of the season that really requires that you slow down.  With the conditions on the trails changing quickly you can get into real trouble when riding.

Suggest if you are riding the woods trails where there is tree cover.  South side of trails that run along roads.

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked.  Stay by the orange reflective barrels.  Remember not all lakes are safe.  No markers means probably not safe

55mph nighttime speed limit.

THINK COLD!  KEEP DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!!!

Thinking might ride Thursday.  See ya on the trails!

Trail Report – : Neillsville, Wisconsin – March 2, 2020

Reporter:Neillsville Granton Trailbusters

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 0-2″ Base

Date of Report: March 2, 2020

Area Report:

Our trails are CLOSED and with no snow in the future forecast they most likely will remain closed for the rest of the season. Be aware riding on closed trails is trespassing and fines apply, not to mention it could cause long term trail closures!

Snowmobile Information:

Our club has been active for 32 years now. We started out as a small club in 1988 named The Neillsville Rec Riders, designing ATV routes that accessed the Clark County Forest Trail System, via roads. We then created our first cross county un-groomed snowmobile and winter ATV trail system from Neillsville to Granton. In 1993 we purchased a used Bombardier groomer to start grooming our trail for snowmobiling. In 1996 we expanded our snowmobile and winter ATV trail system from Neillsville to the Clark County Forest Trail near Hatfield.

In 1997 we added a tractor and new drag to our grooming fleet to keep up with the grooming schedule. In 1999 we further expanded our growing trail system with a snowmobile trail running from Granton to Sherwood. In 2001 we made a big achievement in trail devolpement by creating a snowmobile trail from Neillsville to Loyal, giving us a total of 56 miles in groomed snowmobile trails across private lands. In 2002 we had to add a second tractor and drag to keep up with the high grooming demand. After receiving heavy, drifting snows during the ’06-’08 seasons while continuing to get stuck with our tractors, we felt the need to add a newer tracked groomer to our fleet.

We purchased a Piston Bully trailer groomer to keep up with the demanding trail grooming where our tractors fell short, in deep snow and eliminated 1 tractor and drag! We groom our trails 20′ wide where ever possible and they are the best marked in the county, you won’t get lost on our trail system! In 2010, we had to cease the operation of winter ATV use on all of our snowmobile trails, due to increasing abuse from disrespectful ATV’ers creating problems on private lands. Moving forward in 2011 we strive to keep up with the best snowmobile trails in the county and that is out main focus moving on. Upgrading in 2017 we purchased a 2007 Prinoth BR180 tracked groomer adding two tracked machines to our fleet.

The Clark County Forest ATV and Snowmobile Trails are maintained by the Parks and Forest Department as well as the 9 other clubs that maintain the rest of the trails in Clark County. Our club would not be where it is today without the help and permission of the 89 landowners who allow us to cross their lands. With out them we would have no trails. All of our members that help out, donate their time and it is much appreciated when we get compliments on how well of a job we have done.

Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – March 2, 2020

Reporter:Phelps Snowmobile Club

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: over 12″ on the trail

Date of Report: March 2, 2020

Area Report:

Warm temps and sunshine has taken its effect on our trails.  Bare spots can be found in corners where the sun hits them.  Be advised, any trail routes on area roads are mostly bare except in shaded locations.  Besides that, the trails in the woods have plenty of snow and good conditions.  most morning rides will consist of hard trails with not much lubrication for the slides or heat ex changers.  Once the trail softens up, expect slushy trails and plenty of cooling and lube.  Not much traffic so come on up and hit the trails.

Lincoln County’s funded snowmobile trails are all open.

With the warm weather last weekend trails really took a beating. Trails range from fair to good. Also getting a little icy. There are bare spots on southern exposure and the roads are not looking good. Please STAY on marked trails, we have had way to much off trail riding with some very upset landowners. Remember NO ATV’s when temperature  is above 28 F.

All Northwoods Passage Trails are open, but the weather is warm and the sun is out.

Trails are in fair to good condition in the woods and lesser traveled areas.  Heavily traveled trails like the Bearskin and Hiawatha are deteriorating rapidly.  Roads and south facing areas are pretty bare and poor. Groomers cannot run in the warm weather.

Use caution on water crossings ride near the trail markers.

We cannot emphasize enough to stay on the marked trails!!

All trails are closed to winter ATV use when the temperature is above 28 degrees F.

Be aware of Trail Closed signs, stay on marked trails only and respect private land.

Hello Riders!!

While we are having a warm up we still have GOOD conditions! We’ve had such a great base that has been a blessing to help us make it through the couple of warm ups we’ve had this season. The wooded trails are great! You will find many trails that are near the roads to have slushy or bare spots and some as we call “snirt” spots (snow + dirt). The roads as well are quite bare. However these areas of mention are generally connecting routes from one trail to another so you will not have to travel them long and they are most certainly passable. The lakes are withstanding the warm-up as well, be sure to stick to the trail and not deviate off of it.

Speaking of lakes, the Chippewa Flowage, while a great ride and filled with your favorite stops we do just want to advise you to stay on the staked trails and ride with caution. It’s excellent riding but the lake level has dropped about 8’ over the course of a few months.  The last 2 weeks or so those bars/humps and stumps are more noticeable. Volunteers have staked some of the concerning stumps but please keep your eyes peeled.

Also at some areas of entrance on the Flowage you may find the level is so low there isn’t much water/ice and it’s muddy but those areas are off to the sides of the trails and again, very much passable. Just please ride safely and watch your surroundings.

Some logging is being done north of Nelson Lake on trail 8. Also trail 8 west to Washburn County has some logging happening on it.
