GENERAL AREA REPORT:

Trails are being groomed Weekly

Warmer daytime temperatures have degraded some areas of the trails and some corners have gotten a bit soft.  Road crossings are bare. majority of trails still in good condition.   The nights have been in the single  digits  which has helped keep the snow base intact.  We received a dusting of snow Monday night.

Warmer temps are predicted this weekend and the trails will continue to degrade over the next few weeks. Trails are expected to close the week of the 15th.

We will keep you posted with all things trail related! Be sure to grab one of our new 2020 Cable Area Motor Head Maps here in the Chamber, or at one of our local businesses!

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Still Winter

Date of Report: March 3, 2020

Area Report:

Joe and I just returned from a 400 miles journey and trails from Land O Lakes up to the Mosquito in Toivola, MI were in pretty good shape—better than I expected. Roads are bare and a few roads don’t even have shoulder that are rideable so if you can plan routes that do not involve roads your experience will be much more enjoyable. From the south end of Gogebic thru the Watersmeet and Frosty Club trail system to Sunrise Lodge we never saw a bump. A little thin in some corners but the groomers were all out working magic with the snow they have to work with. Snow would be welcomed as is today’s colder temps but as of today the trails are definitely rideable.

Thanks to The Alley for another successful Candlelight Bowling Frosty Club fundraiser.

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Less and less everyday….

Date of Report: March 3, 2020

Area Report:

Trails and weather is not looking great currently and going forward.  If you want to ride, you sure can, for now.  To enjoy the ride, you must lower your expectations.  There is still a base in the woods, and the trails are flat….Road crossings are down to the dirt. Road routes and gas station lots are down to dry pavement.

You will find bare spots in the open areas.   In the woods, the base is still solid and snow covered.

If you take the time to find a route that minimizes road routes and trails through town, you can get a trip in.  But, conditions can change quickly at this point, and they aren’t going to change for the good.

If you are going to go, do it now. In my opinion, I don’t think they will make it another week….

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN EAGLE RIVER – UPDATE
Adventure Sledding time of the year
Varying conditions

The Groomer Tracking Systems (GTS Trails) reported in the last 24 hours that a groomer did head north from the groomer barn to the Conover connect & onto the east side approach of the Wisconsin River bridge area heading west.  It was doing trail brushing & not grooming.

Sorry for the misreporting.

Cloud today with a high of 35 & low tonight of 19.  Tomorrow partly cloudy witha a high of 33 & low overnight of 23.  Snow flurries this AM with not measurable totals. There is SNOW forecast for Thursday.  Low totals.  Stay tuned.

This is the adventure sledding part of the season.  Meaning when you ride you are going to find every sort of condition.  SNOW covered. Burn through.  Icy.  Mushy with even some water especially road crossing.  As for road routes most are bare.  Under cover sections are shiny ice.  This is a time of the season that really requires that you slow down.  With the conditions on the trails changing quickly you can get into real trouble when riding.

Suggest if you are riding the woods trails where there is tree cover.  South side of trails that run along roads.

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked.  Stay by the orange reflective barrels.  Remember not all lakes are safe.  No markers means probably not safe

55mph nighttime speed limit.

THINK COLD!  KEEP DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!!!

Thinking might ride Thursday.  See ya on the trails!

Groomer Report

Monday 3/2/2020 9:00 am CST Overall Story:

Trails are starting to show signs of cancer, but rider reports from last weekend – even Sunday – were shockingly good.  In and around towns are snirty and icy.  Roads are bare but you’re thoughtful GRTA groomer operators are grooming road banks down for you to ride on.  Outside of town our trails remain in very good condition, which is typical this time of year.  No one can make your decision to come ride besides you.  John Dee is predicting some snows this week which will dramatically improve things.  Water hazards remain froze no worries there.  We’re continuing our efforts to provide a snow covered system for you to ride this up coming weekend.  We feel 160 will be a great ride out of Ironwood.

“Why are trails icy this time of year?”  As the trails melt from the top down the newly released water pools on the sheet of ice that makes up the bottom layer of the trail base.  This in turn builds a thicker and thicker ice base until the snow is gone and the ice is left.

WARNINGS AND NOTICES:   We are begging riders to ride off trail legally as there are 1-million acres of public land east of Wakefield to off trail ride on – please only ride legal areas!  The Ottawa National Forest is 990,000 acres and much of it open to cross-country riding (no trail/road) if there is 6″ or more of snow.  Several restricted areas, contact the forest for further information.  CLICK THIS LINK FOR MAPS, scroll down to motor vehicle use maps.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:

Overall rating:  GOOD

Last groomed 3/2/2020.    Please do not ride on sidewalks near Holiday and try to keep noise down in town.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:

Overall rating:  FAIR

Last groomed 3/2/2020.  This is a tight trail with tremendous amounts of traffic.  Corners will get icy along with the hill climbs in between grooming.  Snow finding operations went very well this week and the trail is once again in good to very good shape.  This trail features a brand new section to enjoy this season, the club eliminated Prospect road route and moved the trail completely into the woods eliminating 1.5 miles of road route.  PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL AND RESPECT THESE LANDOWNERS!

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:

Overall Rating:  GOOD TO VERY GOOD

Last groomed 3/1/2020.  Also in the best shape of the season.  The section from Wakefield east to Highway 2 needs additional passes to finish cutting the deep inside corner bumps and widen the trail.  We expect to get to that this week yet.

Trail 8 from Wakefield to Tula Crossing:

Overall Rating: GOOD TO VERY GOOD

Last Groomed 3/1/2020.  In excellent condition, be aware of a new traffic pattern on the northern end due to a plowed section.  Please follow the new route for the remainder of this season.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):

Overall Rating:  GOOD TO VERY GOOD

Last Groomed 2/27/2020.  There is logging about 1/2 way north on the trail, YIELD TO LOGGERS AND GIVE THEM RESPECT – IT’S THEIR LAND!   STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!!!!   This is our most scenic trail and is a treat to ride!  Stay on the trail in the farm fields.  Over 25 landowners are involved to make this trail a reality, please respect them and ride responsibly.  There are several scenic vistas on the trail:

Bald Mountain “NORTH” lookout viewing Madeline Island/ mouth of the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior

Bald Mountain “SOUTH” lookout viewing Gogebic Range (Powderhorn, Copper Peak)

Montreal River Gorge look out

Superior Falls Waterfall Complex.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):

Overall Rating:  EXCELLENT

Last Groomed 2/25/2020.  Increased logging traffic is in the area for only 1/4 mile, PLEASE YIELD TO ANY AND ALL LOGGING TRAFFIC.  There is a short section of dual use the landowner (Keweenaw Land) has graciously approved us to use along with them.  It is private land and we are guests, please act like it.

11N (Wakefield, MI to South boundary Rd/White Pine):  Closed due to off trail riding.  Seeking local community support with ideas on how to reopen it.  200 yards of private property closed this 25 mile trail.

Updates from our MW Sno-Skeeters:

Took a ride to Mercer on Sunday, trails were great going up. Some brown spots and thinning noticeable on the way back. Sun is really taking a toll in the exposed areas. Still good snow in the woods.

We rode up to Presque Isle yesterday and trails were good. Road section of 6 is getting bare except for the edge. Other than that, great coverage overall. It is snowing a bit this morning. Will keep you posted on accumulation. This time of year, watch for more updates, we will do our best to keep you posted.

Remember, with warm weather during the day and freezing temps at night, you will see icy sections and corners. Overall it’s a great time of year to ride! It’s been a great Winter, THANK YOU ALL for your support! We will keep you posted…

Here’s another post from Groomer Operator, Ben Reichert:  Groomed the entire MW Sno-Skeeters trail system tonight. I was really happy how nice they came together after they were groomed. There are a few thin spots along hwy 51 and through town but Trail 2 is in good shape. The High Line Trail from MW towards Mercer is in really nice shape. I would say that most MW trails as of Monday night (March 2) are in pretty good condition. There are a few sections that are very thin. Remember, it’s March! So it’s bonus riding now! So get out there and grab a few!
