Trails in Eagle River & All of Vilas County remain CLOSED
Eagle River Volunteer Fire Department is ice testing for the ICE CASTLE!

Wet packy SNOW yesterday with sleet off & on most of the day yesterday.  Totals 2-3 inches with a crust of frozen SNOW on top.  Next SNOW on Wednesday with a 70% chance. 2-4 inches with a good chance of Lake Effect on top of that.  Moving in the right direction.  Then on Thursday, Christmas Eve we enter the freezer.  High of 9 & low of 5 on the 24th. Looks to be single digits at night for a week.  Still need more SNOW.  KEEP DANCIN’!

When there is a good 6 inches of SNOW on the trails panning should start. Ground, swamps & other wet areas are frozen up pretty good.

Eagle & Catfish lakes are building ice.  Stay off for now until the Sno-Eagles determine both are safe & marked.

All trail inspections in Vilas County have been completed.  Now we wait. With not much new to report.

A few updates on the trails:

Trail 13 that heads west of Eagle River has a re route in the section that comes out on Oak Lane by the Pine Gables Restaurant.  There is new construction going on so the club has done a temporary move over of the trail.  Next year the trail will be moved slightly south permanently.

Also the lake spur off of the Eagle Lake Trail that takes you to Eagle Waters Resort is back open!!!  The owner Laura Koranda & adjacent landowners worked hard to have this happen!

Let’s get a loud SNOW DANCE GOING!  Can’t wait to see ya all out on the trails!

THINK SNOW!

Area Report:

It is looking better out there. Rode my sled on the entire East side of the trail system yesterday–no issues and we are ready to get these trails open with Mother Nature’s cooperation. John Dee seems to be more optimistic than the local guys so let’s hope he is right and we can be riding on Christmas!

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 2-3″ on the ground

Date of Report: December 21, 2020

Area Report:

The good news…..The lakes have good ice, and will not be an issue for start-up.  The swamps are froze tight, and pre-season inspection didn’t reveal any wet spots, bad areas.  Groomers should be able to pack / pan all areas once enough snow is on the ground.

But, there just isn’t enough white gold for us to do anything with at the present time.  If we continue to get a few inches every few days, we can get out and pan, but nothing scheduled so far.

The trails have been brushed, marked, inspected by club members and are ready to go.  The equipment has all been cleaned, oiled, and preventative maintenance completed.  The grooming schedule is set and drivers are all ready to hit the trails.  The club is in the best position to maintain the trails beyond most rider’s expectations.

Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow.

Trails are still closed at this time.

Hello Riders!

What a year! We are happy to welcome the new riding season where social distancing in the great Northwood’s is always an easy task with the beautiful trails and woods we have to offer! So to start the kick off of the season we wanted to pass a bit of information on…

When do snowmobile trails open and close in Sawyer County?

The snow trails in Sawyer Co travel across several different land management area’s and private properties with different times and policies for opening and closing. Here a few to list.

  1. Tuscobia State trail is open year round for snowmobiles…just in case we get a snow storm in June
  2. Sawyer Co Forest trails are also open year round for that June blizzard.
  3. Flambeau State Forest gates open to their trails upon conditions.
  4. Chequamegon National Forest does not have a set opening and they too decide depending on conditions. They require an adequate snow base before opening. They notify the Alliance upon their decisions – we update this information immediately upon notification. The snow trails have a close date of April 1st unless conditions change.
  5. Many trails in the center of the county cross private property. Many land owners do hunt so they want their property closed until that season is complete mid-December. **Do remember if the other trails are open and you are riding and encounter a closed gate to private property NEVER go around it. We are so grateful these land owners allow us on their land and we need to remain respectful and enter when allowed, stay on the trail, do not leave garbage (this includes belt parts) and remember there are noise laws, if you exceed the limit you need to leave your sled at home.

Also remember we have amazing lakes here in Sawyer County (approximately 20) and many of our great trails cross lakes and swamps to your favorite destinations, lodging and connecting trails. These all need to freeze well before they are staked and open. Some private property trails may lead to swamps so if there is snow but not adequate ice on those wetlands the gates will stay closed until there is to ensure safety. Speaking of ice we have had a cold snap and are making fabulous ice!! Many lakes have reported on average 6″, many have more, some not as much or consistent but they are on their way to being froze over. We will update as we continue to check their status.

Don’t forget your trail pass! Visit gowild.wi.gov to purchase and if you’re a club member get your discounted pass from awsc.org, you do not need to be a WI resident to be a club member. If interested in joining a club visit our website to see the clubs out there!

In the meantime, stay healthy and get your sleds and gear ready because it won’t be long! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
