The Ashland County Snowmobile Trails remain closed until we have more snow.

Please stay on the trail.  A lot of Ashland County snowmobile trails are on farmers land, please be respectful so we don’t lose our easement to their property. Snowmobiles may not be modified, or operated, to amplify or otherwise increase the total vehicle noise above the originally manufactured snowmobile noise level.

Trail Report – : Ely, Minnesota – January 4, 2024

Ely, MN Chamber of Commerce

Reporter:Ely Chamber of Commerce/Explore MN Visitor Center

Trail Conditions: No Snow

Snow Cover: No Snow

Date of Report: January 4, 2024

Area Report:

Minnesota snowmobile trails officially opened Friday, Dec. 1, but the lack of snow cover means the trails aren’t yet usable, the Department of Natural Resources said in a reminder.

Several conditions must be met before trails are open, groomed, and ready for travel, the DNR said:

* The ground must be frozen. Where trails cross wetlands, 15 inches of ice are needed to support the weight of trail groomers.

* Adequate snow cover of about 12 inches must be on the ground to allow for trail packing and grooming.

* Trails must be cleared of fallen trees, signs put in place, and gates opened.

While snowmobilers await the arrival of snow and groomed trails, now is a good time to ensure current registrations and snowmobiles are in good operating order, review safety training, and check local trail maps for route changes or new trails.

Trails remain closed until we receive enough snow to pan the trails and set a base up.

Temps have been cold the last few days to help lakes and swamps to freeze up nicely.

Keep doing the snow dance. There are several systems moving across the US, the one we will be watching is 7-9 days out. Depending on the track and which low pressure system wins out as the stronger one, will show where the heavier precipitation goes. Some models have it going across southern Illinois, and others have it covering northern Wisconsin. Time will tell.

Thanks to all the visitors that were in the area this holiday weekend. The local establishments appreciate all the business and support you showed.

The Trailside roast that was scheduled for January 13th has been canceled.

Snowmobile Information:

I see a lot of posts by people looking for snow. Right now your best bets are out west in Wyoming and South Dakota. Weather channel shows a chance of snow here every day for the next week, but the weekend storm looks to track south of Wisconsin. I have big puffy flakes coming down right now. It has been in the 20’s at night, and below freezing during  the day, so we are slowly making ice. Would be nice to get some zero cold for the big lakes like Fence and Pokegema before a big snow dump. We never marked Fence last year.

Mark your calendars Saturday January 20, Northern Hornshoe Club will be sponsoring a raffle at Harrisons Pub. The fun starts at 1:00 P.M. Proceeds go to our Kubota groomer and drag that will be operating on the trails we reopened on our souther border along highway 70 where our trails meet up with one of my other clubs, Minoqua Forest riders. For you optimists, Harrisons is the old Trailside located on trail 15 north of town. For the pessimists, or those that like to travel in warm comfort, the grid coordinates are 3160 Pokema Lake Trail, Lac du Flambeau. Bill and Joy are great people, have an amazing staff, and the food is outstanding. It is worth the stop just to see the place after the remodel – it just glows. The show will go on, snow or shine, so be there, Aloha.
