Trail Report – : Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin – February 12, 2021

Reporter:Toulish1

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: Good

Date of Report: February 12, 2021

Snowmobile Information:

Rode the frozen tundra Wednesday and Thursday. Left Toulish Lake both days. Ran trail 1 to 51 up though Boulder then west on Wednesday. Stearns Lake Road is thin as is Boundary. Once you are in the woods it is great. Trail 15 coming south from Mercer is starting to thin where you are starting to pick rocks on occasion. Trail 5 into the Casino is good with a few icy spots but the groomers are doing a great job flattening the blowouts. We had a light fuzz of snow late last night, but nothing to make any changes. Sled traffic was light both days. We have a group of 15 running today. Overall conditions are cold, but great.Check us out at Hornshoe.org. We saw four different groomer groups yesterday, and these tireless volunteers make the Northwoods amazing. Have fun, ride safe. Wolf

Trails remain in VERY GOOD to GOOD Condition
GTS Trails app shows groomers out in the last 24 hours
About 1/2 inch of new SNOW overnight

Groomers in Eagle River were out again Trails groomed are:

  • 10/13 that runs through town in both directions
  • Alt 13 that connects to Three Lake trails
  • 10/13N heading north out of town to include trails that run up to the Bauer area connect to Conover
  • 3N aka Manske Swamp
  • 70W that heads west & connects to St. Germain trails
  • 17S/7 connecting south & west to the Sugar Camp trails

Best way to learn the trails is to buy a Sno-Eagles trail map.  Plus download the GTS trails app  It is available at the App Store.

The trails are in great shape everywhere in Vilas county. Returned from a snowmobile trip by sled to Michigan yesterday. As for Eagle River trails from the north rode a Very Good 10/13N heading toward town to a Very Good 3N aka Manske Swamp to a Good to Fair 17N heading north to a Fair 1 to Eagle Lake to a Good 10E.

10/13N & 3N were completed SNOW covered. Under the trees on 17N very pale snirt. Much of trail 1 is on Deerview Lane & Townhall Road so the road sections were icy.  The section that turns into the woods & is a really fun curvy trail through the road had signs of snirt & heavy traffic.  Eagle Lake is very bumpy all the way across along with the south end exit to Dollar Lake Road.  Dollar Lake Road icy & the trail section to the 10E intersection is bumpy with moguls at driveway crossings.  10E is covered with plenty of SNOW on the south side of highway 70E all the way out to were we cross to our house (about 4 miles) except 70E bridge crossing & a section where a homeowner has plowed the trail by their driveway.

If you do riding it’s another cold morning so here are some cold weather riding tips:

  • Extra layers of clothing
  • Gloves/mittens with long lasting hand warmers or try a pair of battery heated gloves. Gauntlets over handle bars good too
  • Cold weather boots with layered socks. Boot warmers are good too
  • Fully charged phone stored in the inside pocket of your jacket
  • Heated shields are great other wise remember to breath through your nose to prevent fogging
  • Stop more frequently & drink water. Cold can cause dehydration
  • Tell someone where you are riding & download the MapItVilasCo app.  It gps’s your location & the location of the TIN(trail identification numbers)

Please stay on the trails to keep the trails open.

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked with orange reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  The lakes are marked by the businesses on the lake so stop in & thank them when you’re out riding.

Fantastic ride up to White Pine, MI with a total of 14 riders.  130 miles Tuesday. 100+ miles Wednesday. 110 miles Thursday!  Riding was great SNOW throughout Vilas county & the UP!!

TIME TO RIDE IF YOU ARE HARDY! SEE YA ON THE TRAILS!!!

Date of Report: February 11, 2021

Area Report:

I would rate our trail conditions very good, most are excellent. There are a few trails that have a very thick canopy that prevents alot of snow from reaching them and they really need more snow on them. That is the only reason I did not rate them excellent. The swamps and lakes frozen over good the only issue with the lakes last time I was out I noticed some slush between the snow and the ice but nothing major. Both are groomers are out every night making the best of it. Be safe and have fun.

Trail Report – : Ely, Minnesota – February 11, 2021

Ely, MN Chamber of Commerce

Reporter:Ely Chamber of Commerce/Explore MN Visitor Center

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8-18″

Date of Report: February 11, 2021

Area Report:

GENERAL INFORMATION: Trails are a mixed bag right now. On one hand, with the recent cold weather, trails are holding up well and in fair to very good condition with the relatively small amount of snow the area has received. Additional snowfall of four or so inches would turn most trails from good to amazing. With the lack of snowfall, there is a loss of a little bit of trail base every time crews groom, so upland and heavily wooded areas are fairly thin and getting thinner. Watch for rocks and rough trail especially in hilly sections and in upland trail portions with heavy tree cover.

Logging continues throughout the trails, especially further north on the Arrowhead trail. Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space. No Motorized Vehicles other than snowmobiles are allowed on State Trails or Grant-in-Aid snowmobile trails.

There is also a section of the Arrowhead State Trail closed between Hwy 53 (SE of Ericsburg) and the Hagerman Grant-in-Aid trail while the Rat Root River bridge is being replaced, so watch for trail reroute.

Area Trails: All the Ely Area trails have been getting groomed. With the low temperatures, crews have been grooming during the day when it is a little warmer which is safer for operators in case of breakdowns. Please use caution with the groomers on the trail. The Tomahawk to the North Shore is also being groomed during the day.

Arrowhead State Trail:  The Arrowhead State trail is the backbone to an extensive Grant-in-Aid trail system that travels through remote areas.

TRAIL CONDITIONS:  Snowmobiling: Condition- Fair to Good; Trail – Groomed; Base – 1-4”

TRAIL CLOSURE/REROUTE: Hwy 53 east to the Hagerman Grant-in-Aid trail is closed due to a trail bridge being replaced. This section of trail will remain closed until the project is completed. Please use the Hagerman and Slatinski Grant-in-Aid trails to route around the closed bridge. There is signage on both sides of the project directing riders on the reroute.

The entire Arrowhead State Trail has been groomed and is in fair to good condition. Conditions continue to be rougher in the Ban Lake area due to ledge rock on that portion of trail and not enough snow. The entire trail will be fully groomed leading up to and during the upcoming weekend.

Bearhead Lake State Park:  Bearhead State Park trails provide rolling topography through birch and pine stands.  You may see a variety of wildlife ranging from deer, wolves, ruffed grouse, and pine martens.  You can snowshoe anywhere in Minnesota’s state parks and recreation areas, except on trails that are specifically groomed for another activity, such as snowmobiling or skiing.

TRAIL CONDITIONS: Snowmobiling: Condition – Fair; Trails – Groomed; Base 2”

The Taconite Trail in Bear Head Lake State Park was groomed and is in fair condition with some areas of debris and thin base under the large pines.

Lake Vermilion – Soudan Underground Mine State Park:  The park has six miles of snowmobile trails that connect from the Taconite State Trail to the Lake Vermilion ice trail.  The ride takes you through old growth pines and young aspen forests with large wetland complexes to view along the way.  You can snowshoe anywhere in Minnesota’s state parks and recreation areas, except on trails that are specifically groomed for another activity, such as snowmobiling or skiing.

TRAIL CONDITIONS:  Snowmobiling: Condition – Fair; Trails – Groomed; Base – 1-4”

Trails are in fair condition and will be groomed again before this coming weekend.  No Motorized Vehicles other than snowmobiles are allowed on State Trails or Grant-in-Aid snowmobile trails. Please use caution while riding, travel at appropriate speeds, and stay to the right.

Putnam/Fishing Lakes – Bear Island State Forest: The Putnam and Fishing Lakes Trails traverse forested, rolling topography through birch, ash, and pine stands.  Several small lakes dot the landscape along these scenic trails.

TRAIL CONDITIONS:  Snowmobiling: Condition – Fair; Trails –Groomed; Base 1-4”

Trail is in fair to good condition. Fishing Lakes Trail will be groomed again before this coming weekend. Putnam Lake trail remains very rough and will not be groomed again until we get more snow to cover the numerous spots with rocks and ruts.

Please use caution on the trails, travel at appropriate speeds, and stay to the right. There is active logging happening on a number of spots throughout the Grant-in-Aid and State Trail system. Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space. No Motorized Vehicles other than snowmobiles are allowed on State Trails or Grant-in-Aid snowmobile trails.

Taconite State Trail: Taconite State Trail stretches 165 miles from Grand Rapids to Ely through many scenic vistas of rolling hillsides, lakes, rivers and forest.

TRAIL CONDITIONS: Snowmobiling: Condition – Fair to Good; Trails –Groomed; Base 1-4”

The entire Taconite between Ely and Side Lake has been groomed and is in fair to good condition. Trail base remains thin in occasional upland areas throughout the trail, especially in the first ten miles west of Ely and the trail portion going west from Hwy 53. The trail will be fully groomed leading up to and during this coming weekend.
