Boulder Junction Trail Report 2/15/2021       8:00 a.m., -29 degrees

With below zero temps and lower sled traffic this weekend, our trails remain in very good shape. Our twisty hilly sections in the woods are getting worn thin and you may encounter some icy corners, but our straights and road trails are in very good to excellent condition. We could use some fresh snow right now.

Unfortunately, we are still down 1 groomer and our other groomer has been running 4 shifts around the clock.

All of our trails were groomed on Saturday and 15S was groomed on Sunday.

Thanks to all who stopped in and supported us at our snowmobile breakfast at the Boulder Beer Bar on Sunday!

Speed Limit Advisory: When passing through town whether you are on Corridor 8 or Corridor 15, please use the marked trails, follow the signs, and observe the 15mph speed limit. Also, no snowmobiles are allowed on downtown Main Street.

Please be safe out there, ride on the right, respect others, and enjoy the trails and our area businesses.

Think snow!

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 15-20″

Date of Report: February 15, 2021

Area Report:

We hope everyone enjoyed the weekend of riding in SE WI.  We picked up a couple inches of fresh snow over the weekend which really helped our conditions.  Overall things are still in great shape.  Groomers will be back out after the weekend traffic to smooth things back out.  It looks like we will remain cold for another day or two then temps will start to warm a bit.  We should be good to go through the weekend at least.  Then beyond this coming Sunday we will have to start keeping an eye on the high temperatures for the day.  This time of year we have more daylight so if it is a full sun day and even 30-32F that sun can eat away at our trails relatively quickly. Especially near road crossings and corners.  So keep that in mind however it doesn’t look like it will be a huge warm up coming but something worth monitoring.   Enjoy the trails while we have the snow!

Groomers in Eagle River were out again Trails groomed:

  • 10/13N from groomer barn north all the way across Wisconsin River Bridge.
  • 10W/7 to Sayner/St. Germain trails connection
  • Alt 13S to Three Lakes trails connection

Best way to learn the trails is to buy a Sno-Eagles trail map. It also had the entire Vilas county trails on the backside.  Plus download the GTS trails app  It is available at the App Store.

Trails saw heavy traffic with lots of riders upnorth for President’s Weekend.    Very little change in trail conditions due to the very cold weather.  There is a very hard base of 3+ inches with loose SNOW on top.  No new SNOW.  With the hard base there are some icy sharp corners so again slow down. Trails that have a heavy pine tree covering have thinner SNOW & some pale snirt.  The SNOW does get down through the big pines as well.  With nightly grooming trails are in good shape.

If you do riding it’s another cold morning so here are some cold weather riding tips:

  • Extra layers of clothing
  • Gloves/mittens with long lasting hand warmers or try a pair of battery heated gloves. Gauntlets over handle bars good too
  • Cold weather boots with layered socks. Boot warmers are good too
  • Fully charged phone stored in the inside pocket of your jacket
  • Heated shields are great other wise remember to breath through your nose to prevent fogging
  • Stop more frequently & drink water. Cold can cause dehydration
  • Tell someone where you are riding & download the MapItVilasCo app.  It gps’s your location & the location of the TIN(trail identification numbers)

Please stay on the trails to keep the trails open.

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked with orange reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe. Both are bumpy so might want to slow down. The lakes are marked by the businesses on the lake so stop in & thank them when you’re out riding.

Trail Report – : Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin – February 13, 2021

Reporter:Toulish1

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Holding up

Date of Report: February 13, 2021

Snowmobile Information:

Our Midnite Trail rider group ( Champion, WI. – yes, it is a real place) ran the Turtle flowage area yesterday, then came back through Lac du Flambeau to tank up, then ran Fence Lake back to 17 and up to Toulish. The Lake had some bumpy spots and caution is advised. I groomed last night, and only saw 1 group of three Eskimos. Trail 5 into the Casino is great. Plenty of snow yet, other than a couple of corners that always blow out. When our group came down 17, we were picking some stones, but other than a couple of thin spots a mile up from Trail 5, it groomed well. The trails are holding amazingly well for no snow. Our riding group is very active in AWSC, so we stop at quite a few groomer sheds. It takes a lot of work to keep our frozen iron running, and a lot of hours to keep our trails safe and groomed. Thank your volunteers, hug your groomers, and check us out at www.Hornshoe.org. Wolf
