Hello Riders!
Well, we hate to say it but we are closing in on the end of this season, and what a great season it has been! As always it flew by too fast but we are so grateful we were able to enjoy this great sport in 2021! This time last year as we were saying goodbye to season 2020 the world was becoming unfamiliar and shutting down and our ideas of normal would forever be changed. Over the last year we all have been unsure what events we would be able to partake in so we have such gratitude we were able to enjoy this sport this year and feel a bit “normal” so to speak! We support all winter sports here in Sawyer County, whether it be snowmobiling, ATV/UTV, skiing, Fat Tire biking, snow shoeing any path you choose that gets you out there to enjoy the outdoors! This year also brought new riders that were either introduced or reintroduced into the sport, we welcome you and can’t wait to see you on the trails next season!
Today is March 4th and the first weekend of March is always a bonus weekend if we are able to ride, and that’s what we have, a little bonus. We have spoken to several avid riders, many who are also groomers that were able to finally get on their own sleds for a change of pace and check out the trails. They reported back some info for us to pass along. Just as we expected, the conditions vary from place to place, some areas are poor and some areas are still quite passable. As you would expect those areas that are rideable are those areas that are most protected from the elements such as areas on the denser forest trails i.e. Seeley Hills, Chequamegon National Forest and Flambeau Forest. The areas that are poor are again as you’d expect, those out in the open area with no coverage and any on and near the roads. So for those of you that want to squeak one more ride before the finally we can offer some suggested trails that these riders tested and are as of today fair and those that are poor.
Trails that have been reported fair;
Seeley Hills; trails 15, 77, 8, 31
30 from the casino to 9
319 between Lost Land Lake to Moose Lake to the Flowage
5 from Moose Lake south towards the Flowage
Trails 12, 18, 21, 53
Trails that are poor:
4 from Nelson Lake
Trail 63
3/9 between Chief Lake and Round Lake
9 north of Round Lake
Trail 3/5 that runs parallel to Hwy 77
Lakes are reported to be passable right now as well, as long as you stay on the staked trail, off of that it gets slushy. But as always, we suggest staying on the staked trail for your safety.
Many of these that are reported as still passable are trails that were groomed the end of this last weekend and early this week, which was the purpose for grooming them, in hopes of sustaining the snow on them as long as possible.
So as we near the end of the season we want to send some HUGE thank yous! First, to the GROOMERS! They make this all possible! Not just the many logged hours in the machine but also the logged hours fixing and doing maintanence. Many thanks to all of our volunteers, there are so many people behind the scenes making sure everything operates smoothly such as with trail openings, working with the towns/county/state, DNR, forestry, land owners (another HUGE thank you to those land owners), etc. Many that work with funding for these trails and the equipment used to maintain them. Many that react quickly to safety concerns. The list goes on. Thank you to our awesome businesses for their food, drinks, lodging, fuel, all of their hospitality! Finally we want to thank ALL of you for choosing Sawyer County as your riding destination! This area is brought to life with all of your visits and excitement! Snowmobiler’s are just an amazing group of people! Thank you for supporting our county and businesses!
While we do have to say good bye to our snowmobile season 2021 that doesn’t mean the fun stops! Remember, Sawyer County offers a fabulous ATV/UTV trail system! The spring closure will be lifted 5/15, we will update as we move into spring. We have many ATV/UTV only trails but also many that are shared with the snowmobile trails. It’s always fun to see the changes in scenery from winter to spring to summer to fall on these trails! So please come back and visit soon! Until then, thank you for the fabulous season, stay healthy and stay safe!

Trail Report – : Ely, Minnesota – March 4, 2021

Ely, MN Chamber of Commerce

Reporter:Ely Chamber of Commerce/Explore MN Visitor Center

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 4-12″

Date of Report: March 4, 2021

Area Report:

GENERAL INFORMATION: With the warm weather, high snowmobile traffic, and little snowfall over the last couple weeks, the trail base has depleted to nothing over a large portion of our trails. Also, due to the warm temps and no base, grooming will be suspended indefinitely unless we get more snow.

This is for all of our trails, including the Arrowhead and Taconite State Trails, Putnam and Fishing Lakes Trails, and Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine State Park trails. Trails are down to dirt through a majority of our trail system and have not been able to be groomed since early last week.

If you do go out, remember that there is active logging happening on a number of spots throughout the Grant-in-Aid and State Trail system, especially as you go further north toward Orr and International Falls. Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space. No Motorized Vehicles other than snowmobiles are allowed on State Trails or Grant-in-Aid snowmobile trails.

There is also a section of the Arrowhead State Trail closed between Hwy 53 (SE of Ericsburg) and the Hagerman Grant-in-Aid trail while the Rat Root River bridge is being replaced, so watch for trail reroute.

Area Trails:  Grooming on the Tomahawk trail is currently suspended due to warm weather. There is not enough base to groom. Some spots are quite rough. More snow is needed before grooming operations can resume.

Arrowhead State Trail:  The Arrowhead State trail is the backbone to an extensive Grant-in-Aid trail system that travels through remote areas.

TRAIL CONDITIONS:  Snowmobiling: Condition- Poor; Trail – Not Groomed; Base – 0”

TRAIL CLOSURE/REROUTE: Hwy 53 east to the Hagerman Grant-in-Aid trail is closed due to a trail bridge being replaced. This section of trail will remain closed until the project is completed. Please use the Hagerman and Slatinski Grant-in-Aid trails to route around the closed bridge. There is signage on both sides of the project directing riders on the reroute.

The Arrowhead State Trail is in poor condition due to the warmer weather, no snowfall and recent high volume of snowmobile traffic. Grooming has been suspended indefinitely for the season unless a major snowfall occurs and temperatures drop for an extended period of time.

Bearhead Lake State Park:  Bearhead State Park trails provide rolling topography through birch and pine stands.  You may see a variety of wildlife ranging from deer, wolves, ruffed grouse, and pine martens.  You can snowshoe anywhere in Minnesota’s state parks and recreation areas, except on trails that are specifically groomed for another activity, such as snowmobiling or skiing.

TRAIL CONDITIONS: Snowmobiling: Condition – Poor; Trails – Groomed; Base 0-4”

The Taconite Trail in Bear Head Lake State Park was groomed and is in fair condition with some areas of debris and thin base under the large pines.

Cross Country ski track was set in the campground and Beach Trail and is in poor condition due to lack of snow and warm weather.

Lake Vermilion – Soudan Underground Mine State Park:  The park has six miles of snowmobile trails that connect from the Taconite State Trail to the Lake Vermilion ice trail.  The ride takes you through old growth pines and young aspen forests with large wetland complexes to view along the way.  You can snowshoe anywhere in Minnesota’s state parks and recreation areas, except on trails that are specifically groomed for another activity, such as snowmobiling or skiing.

TRAIL CONDITIONS:  Snowmobiling: Condition – Poor; Trails – Not Groomed; Base – 0”

Soudan Underground Mine and Lake Vermilion State Park trails are in poor condition due to the recent warmer weather and no snowfall. Grooming has been suspended indefinitely unless a major snowfall occurs and temperatures drop for an extended period of time.

Putnam/Fishing Lakes – Bear Island State Forest: The Putnam and Fishing Lakes Trails traverse forested, rolling topography through birch, ash, and pine stands.  Several small lakes dot the landscape along these scenic trails.

TRAIL CONDITIONS:  Snowmobiling: Condition – Poor; Trails –Not Groomed; Base 0”

Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail is in poor condition due to the recent warmer weather and no snowfall. Grooming has been suspended indefinitely unless there is a major snowfall and temperatures drop for an extended period of time.

Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space. No Motorized Vehicles other than snowmobiles are allowed on State Trails or Grant-in-Aid snowmobile trails.

Fifield Sno drovers Trail Report for 3/3

As of this morning the trails in the Fifield/Pike Lake area are in fair to good condition with numerous bare spots. The warm weather for the next few days will certainly be hard on them and we’re unsure of how long they will still be ridable. The trails in the best condition are those with the least traffic and that do not run on roadways which are very bare. Trails 120 south, 121 west and 111 to the north are the best bet, but even those can be expected to degrade significantly over the next couple of days.
