EAGLE RIVER TRAILS
Remain CLOSED

The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance meeting Wednesday evening, January 18.  All 11 Clubs discussed the potential of opening the trails.  The vote was NOT to open the trails at this time.  Below is the PSA forwarded by the Parks and Rec Supervisor following the meeting.

All trails in Sno-Eagles Country were panned over the last few days.  The Manske Swamp – Trail 3 and Wisconsin River Trail – 10W/13N are not being panned both areas need to freeze up harder.  Both areas have been packed by snowmobiles and are good to go.

There have been re routes and closures of trails. Here’s a 2023-2024 Sno-Eagles trail map. Right click to enlarge.

The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance meeting Wednesday evening, January 18.  All 11 Clubs discussed the potential of opening the trails.  The vote was NOT to open the trails at this time.  Below is the PSA forwarded by the Parks and Rec Supervisor following the meeting

In the meantime the Eagle River Sno-Eagles are panning land trails and packing any remaining wet, soft areas. The Wisconsin River section of 10W/13N is still not safe to ride.  At present the gates to that area are shut.  The rest of the trails are frozen with a few small mushy spots.  Saw some a week ago on 13/17S along Hwy 17S a week ago which pretty are now frozen as it has been very cold.

There have been re routes and closures of trails. When trails are ready to open I will list the changes

News and Reports:

NEWS RELEASE / PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
DATE: January 18, 2024
FROM: Todd Bierman, Vilas County Parks and Recreation Supervisor
RE: Vilas County Snowmobile Trails to Remain Closed
THE VILAS COUNTY SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM, INCLUDING ALL FUNDED AND NON-FUNDED TRAILS AND ROUTES WILL REMAIN CLOSED AT THIS TIME.
The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance, at its January meeting, discussed the opening of the Vilas County Trail System. Many factors were taken into consideration including economic impact to area businesses, private property owners, and most importantly, safe use of the trails. A majority of the voting member clubs recommended that the trails remain closed at this time, citing current marginal snow amounts, possible off-trail riding situations and the unsafe conditions currently found on the trail system. The latter being the most important trail issue out there. This was not an easy decision for these clubs to make.
The Alliance is made up of the 11 snowmobile clubs in Vilas County, (The Arbor Vitae Cross Country Cruisers, The Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club, The Conover Sno-Buddies, The Eagle River Sno-Eagles, The Lac du Flambeau Northern Hornshoe, The Land O’ Lakes Frosty Club, The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters, The Phelps Snowmobile Club, The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies, The Sayner Barnstormers, and The St. Germain Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club). They ask for patience until the conditions allow for a safe and enjoyable experience here in Vilas County. This is a highly unusual winter here in Vilas County and we hope that more normal conditions return soon.
For more information, please contact Todd Bierman, Parks and Recreation Supervisor at 715-479-5160.

Snowmobile Information:

Many have been wondering about trail conditions in Iron County and when the snowmobile trails will be open. Mercer Area Sno-goers, White Thunder Riders, and the Iron County Forestry Dept. have been working hard with what little snow we have received since the weekend but unfortunately, there just isn’t enough to open the trails yet.
Many trails have water holes and other hazards that we just cannot deal with until Mother Nature cooperates. Next week is not looking to be in our favor with warm weather coming.
We all want the trails open, we wanted them open a month ago! But this unusual winter is tying our hands.

Trail Report – : Conover, Wisconsin – January 18, 2024

Reporter:snobuddies

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 6”

Date of Report: January 18, 2024

Area Report:

The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance voted last night to keep the trails closed for now until we receive more snow. This is to protect the private land owners that the trails cross. The temps have been cold helping to freeze up swamp areas. North Twin Lake has been marked for when trails do open.

Forecast is for a brief warm up, which may bring us the snow we need. If we do get enough snow, the crews will be out to pan the trails and make sure they are safe to go.

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 17, 2024

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 0-5

Date of Report: January 17, 2024

Area Report:

Land trails are open but in poor condition with marginal snow, exposed rocks, and ruts. A few groomers have been out to do some panning and lay the snow flat, other than that, groomers will not be out until we get more snow.  You can follow the groomer operations on the GTS app for the most up to date information.

Private property gates, specifically ones that cross swamps and waterways, are not open yet.

The cold weather has been helpful with lakes. Those lakes that are staked are:

Moose Lake

Nelson Lake

Barker Lake

Much of the Chippewa Flowage ***see the note below on the details of where on the Flowage is staked and where is not***

Chippewa Flowage Specifics:

WEST SIDE: trail is staked from trail 9 by Chief Lake Lodge Bar & Grill / Pat’s Landing Resort up to Highway CC connecting to the east side, and up to trail 3 and 9. All businesses on the west side (Pat’s, Chief, Chippewa Pines Resort, Big Musky Resort, Sisko’s Pine Point Resort, and The Landing) have staked or are finishing staking to the main trail today as well.

EAST SIDE: trail is staked from Treeland Resorts / R & R Bayview Resort & Restaurant, and Dun Rovin Resort past Deerfoot Lodge & Resort down to Shady Nook Resort and up to Johnson’s Resort on Trail 1N.

PLEASE NOTE: Trail 6 up the river channel to Deer Run Resort and Musky Tale Resort is not yet staked and needs more time for the ice thickness to improve. You can access those businesses via the road route. Trail 18 near the Winter dam is also not yet staked.

For your safety and the safety of others following your tracks – DO NOT RIDE UNSTAKED TRAILS

Plans to stake Lost Land, Tiger Cat and Spider Lake for Thursday and Friday. We will update once that is done.

There are no additional updates on lakes at this time.  LCO, Grindstone, Whitefish, Sissabaagama, and Long Lake just froze over this week and are not ready.  Crews will be monitoring them, and we will keep you updated.  Please DO NOT ride on lakes that are not staked.
