Trail Conditions: Unknown

Snow Cover: 6-9 inches

Date of Report: December 16, 2021

Area Report:

Thursday, December 16 – As off 12/15/21, the Vilas County Snowmobile trails will remain closed due to the unseasonable warm weather and wind that we received Wednesday into Thursday. All our trails have been panned and groomed multiple times in anticipation of our trails opening soon. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did us in as we lost a lot of snow and we will have to reinspect our entire trail system to make sure they are safe to travel on. Check back for future updates and think snow!

Right now it is important to remember the trails are NOT open.  As soon as we know the official opening date and time we will pass along the information.  Until then, feel free to contact us and request this year’s snowmobile map and keep an eye on our webcam to see current snowfall in Boulder Junction.  This report is brought to you by the Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club.

Snow Cover: Hard crusty snow following warm up & storm

Date of Report: December 16, 2021

Area Report:

December 16, 2021 9:22am – 32 degrees

Good morning,

Quite a weather ride starting yesterday into this morning.  Temps started to rise & by evening yesterday had risen to the mid 50’s.  Very foggy with the snow melt.  All followed by high winds.  Still some wind but has settled down.  Temps are now at 32 degrees & a bit of very light SNOW!  SNOW still on the ground, more than I expected but it is now frozen & crusty. Which could be a good thing.  Beginning of a hard frozen base.

Many areas are reporting trees down & some breakup of the swamps.  For that reason, when the Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance met last night in Boulder Junction the vote was NOT TO OPEN THE TRAILS IN VILAS COUNTY at this time.  The 11 clubs will continue to communicate with the Vilas County Parks & Rec Supervisor.  So  DO NOT RIDE THE TRAILS as they are NOT OPEN.  Plus with the trees down could be dangerous.  Want to help with clean up contact the Sno-Eagles Trail Boss at 715.891.2332.

Time to be patient.  Keep checking back for updates!

Trail Report – : Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin – December 15, 2021

Reporter:Toulish1

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: Pounded

Date of Report: December 15, 2021

Snowmobile Information:

Vilas County Trails are closed. Tonight the alliance opted to postpone a vote on opening trails until after the wind storm tonight, and ride out the rest of the week.. Our beachhead has been pounded the last two days, and it is soft. As of 8:00 tonight, it is 53 degrees in Lac Du Flambeau. Any roads that were plowed are bare. I could see dirt spots on trail 15, the grade, this afternoon. I was working in my garage today, with the heat on, and shut off the heat and opened the garage door this afternoon. The national weather service is predicting winds up to 60 MPH tonight. I will sleep with my chain saw under my pillow, and see what we end up with in the morning, then advise with any new of interest. Mark

GENERAL INFORMATION: With the warm-up this week, snow cover has diminished.  Most lakes do have ice; however, they are very slushy.  For those who are traveling across the ice, do not assume there is a uniform thickness.  Test ice along the way.  With the warm-up, ice will be thinner in areas of constricted water flow, near rapids, and springs.  Use caution at all times.

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – December 14, 2021

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 6-9 inches of snow

Date of Report: December 14, 2021

Area Report:

Trails in Sawyer County don’t have a “target” open date as they never technically close, other than the Tuscobia (#10) until 12/15. However, there are some unspoken guidelines we follow to start the season. The 12/15 date coincides with hunting. There is still deer muzzle loader hunting until the 15th. Land owners give us the privilege of riding on their land but their use is priority as that includes hunting. Speaking of private land use, there are gates to these. Landowners and trail captains do not open these gates until the trails are rideable and groom-able, meaning there is a base of decent and groom-able snow and all areas that those trails lead to are safe. By this we mean these trails may lead to lakes and/or swamps, if they are not safe the gate will still stay closed until they are. DO NOT ever go around a closed gate and ride on private property! This will close a trail and one that will be a crucial trail with crucial access to others, the importance of that area is we have asked for permission to ride on that land. This is SO important! If you see this happen please report to the DNR, do not let our privilege’s be ruined. As the signage says “Stay on the trail or stay home”.
Trail Captains, clubs and businesses will check ice progress several times a day the second there is enough for them to safely be on moving from the shore out. Generally they are looking for approximately 8” to call the lake safe and stake. And this thickness needs to be consistent through out the lake as well as of that lake trails leads to another neighboring lake. They report quickly so we will share as soon as there is something to report.
While we aren’t there yet it’s so close we can taste it! A few riders were in the Seeley Hills this weekend getting a little taste, it won’t be long! So in the mean time while your waiting, get your gear out and ready, get your sleds tuned up and batteries charged and make sure your registration is up to date and you have your 2022 trail pass! We’ll see you soon!
