Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – December 22, 2021

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 6-9 inches of snow

Date of Report: December 22, 2021

Area Report:

Hello Riders! As you have seen on a previous post we are getting some snow. Approximately 5-7″ has fallen today (on top of the approximately existing 1-3″), it is still snowing but has lightened up. Our temps have been cold for about 5 days and our lakes are making some good ice. The snow is light and fluffy snow, while we love wet and heavy snow we are happy it is not those conditions right now while trying to make ice. Our temp tonight drops to about -4 and continues to say in the teens at night and mid 20’s during the day, these are great temps for making ice and snow! Friday does have a forecast into the 30’s but that is not worrisome. If we continue with cool temps the next few days to freeze the lakes and then a little wet sleet on top of the existing snow on Friday that may be a blessing to help freeze the current snow in place to create a good base. Saturday-Monday calls for some snow, two of the days about an inch and one day about 3″. We will take it, it all adds up!
The clubs will continue to check lakes and swamps. Please remember much more goes into the trails being ready then just grooming. Many trails, both private and public land lead to lakes and swamps that are not safe yet and dead end you, therefore private property gates will not open until they lead to safe areas. As for the trails that are on county land and any that are on private land that do not lead to wetlands the groomers will go out when they feel the snow is frozen and hardened so they do not do damage to the existing snow with the heavy equipment. This new fresh snow is great to see but it needs to set up and freeze before riders are on it for it to stick and last. So in the meantime we will continue to enjoy the fresh Christmas snow and low temps as they set up for a great season! It’s so close! We will continue to update when any groomers plan to go out and any lakes are safe and scheduled to be staked!

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Date of Report: December 21, 2021

Area Report:

Late last week we had rain and warm temperatures, which eliminated the snow we had on the ground.

The snow is a welcome site in the Northwoods today, however trails are still not ready for riding.  The cold weather is helping get the ice set up on area lakes and swamps, but as of today there is not enough ice to get trails staked just yet.  Please continue to check back for updates as we will post all of the information that we have as soon as possible.

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 2″-8″

Date of Report: December 20, 2021

Area Report:

With the huge storm that came through late Wednesday/early Thursday, our snow base took a big hit as well as downed trees.  The Phelps trail system is all cleared thanks to the many volunteers who came out to help with the clean up.  We need more snow due to bare ground in the open, like the Phelps park.  The trail base is pretty solid thanks to some preseason panning before the warm-up came.  Come back and stay posted as to when the trails open.

Oconto County snowmobile clubs and volunteers have worked tirelessly to get the Red Arrow, Paul Bunyan, Iron Snowshoe, and Chute Pond Snowmobile Trials cleaned up, groomed, and ready for your snowmobiling enjoyment.  There are a few sections of trail that are not open within these club’s trail systems, Please follow marked reroutes.  The trails south of the Town of Mountain Line and that part of the Town of Brazeau north of HWY 64 remain closed as the majority of those trails are on Ag land that needs more snow to cover the winter crops and provide a safe riding experience.  The Nicolet State Trail, aka the grade, is the only trail open South of Mountain, which is open from Suring to Forest County.

Logging is currently in process on both County and Federal Properties. When coming into a logging area, follow the signage and never go under or near logging equipment when they are in use.  This is a very dangerous situation, and if it continues, the trail may be shut down or forced to be rerouted. Let’s all be safe and patient when we are on the trails.  Logging equipment has the right of way.

The nine snowmobile clubs in Oconto County work together with the Oconto County Forest Administrator, who gives the final approval before trails may open.  Once the Southern trails are approved to open, the announcement will appear on the official Oconto County Trail Report web page https://www.ocontocounty.org/trail-reports/ . For your safety and that of the club groomers and volunteers- please stay off the southern trails – do not ride on closed trails. For more information, please contact the Oconto County website or the Forest and Parks Department at 920-834-6995.

NEWS FROM OUR LOCAL VERMILION PENGUINS SNOWMOBILE CLUB!  THEY ARE STAKING LAKE VERMILION THIS WEEK!  CONDITIONS ARE STILL NOT PRIME YET FOR RIDING THE TRAILS, ALTHOUGH LAKE RIDING MAY STILL BE SKETCHY IN SOME AREAS.  WE WILL UPDATE THIS WEEK AS WE WILL BE OUT HELPING STAKE THE LAKE.

NEW STAKING SCHEDULE – Help needed.
We are trying to get the stakes set before Christmas so we need to do it mid-week which makes volunteers a bit more difficult to come by so if you can help please do. It’s fun.
Schedule:
Monday: we will set the big map/directional signs out on the lake. We could use another body or two with sleds. The plan is to meet at the shop but if that is out of your way – we can meet on the lake. Please let us know in a comment if you are available.
Tuesday: we will stash stakes at convenient locations around the lake so staking will be more efficient. We could use a body or two with pickups. 9:30 at the shop.
Wednesday: this is the big day, we would like to get all the stakes set so will need bodies with sleds (meaning snowmobiles but if you have a sled sled we can use that too). Usually we have a lot of help but this being midweek near Xmas we might be a little skinny so please volunteer if you can. Any extra bodies will not be wasted we will just get done sooner. Bring a little shovel and a 3lb or so hammer if you have them. Meet at the shop at 9:30 or catch up to us one the lake.
Thanks everybody – stuff is getting real now and fast!!! Yippee!!!!

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – December 19, 2021

Reporter:Stretch

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 2″ – 4″

Date of Report: December 19, 2021

Area Report:

After 4 days of sun at 40° & 50° plus Wednesday night thunderstorms our trails took a hit. However as of today the trails south of Portage Bridge are in fair to good condition. We have started limited grooming at night only.

North of the bridge has a little less snow but the trails are rideable. Trail 3 has been opened up north of Phoenix but has not been groomed. Trails 124 and 133 have been brushed and and opened up. BE VERY CAREFUL on these 2 trails as there are some large water holes and until it freezes we cannot fill them. Trails 122 Lake Linden to Gay and 130 between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor are both still closed. Also the Portage bridge is still closed to snowmobile traffic but hope to be opened very soon.

We need some cold weather and snow to get everything in better shape. Just be careful it’s still early season so travel at your own risk.
